There Goes The Garden

It was ugly.

The garden in our front yard, that is.

It was covered with faded wood chips and there were weeds growing everywhere.

So Tom and I decided to re-do it all:

That's our garden. Naked. We plan on doing stuff with it. We got some red wood chips.

No plants. Because they'd probably die.

Wish us luck.

Are you good at doing your yard?

If so, are you for rent to do ours?

  1. I LOVE extreme gardening. Unfortunately I'm thinking that I'm a bit too far away to help. Good luck!

  2. Nope... Not good at all in the yard/garden. When we bought our house, it was beautifully maintained and landscaped... not so much any more. We pay a guy to keep our grass mowed and shrubs contained. That's about it! :o)

    Good Luck!

  3. Well - 300 pounds of cement and you could slab it over.. or build a deck above it...

    :)

Or do what I did one year, buy some potted plastic flowers and put them in holes out there. They kept brilliantly in bloom for months....

    P.s., Round-Up is a good investment too.

  4. Nope, not a gardener. I grew some nice flowers in a container this year, but I don't think they would have done so well if they had been in the ground.

  5. Well, it's the wrong time of year to plant anything! We'll talk in the spring, lol!

  6. Sorry I suck at yard stuff. My husband joking tells me not to touch the plants because I kill them.

  7. I do not have a green thumb. I kill my plants unless I let Jakes take care of them. HE has the green thumb. Want me to send him to help? lol

  8. Looks good for now and worry about it come spring!

  9. My husband and I just did some landscaping a few weekends ago. We basically went to the nursery and said "we need good, hearty bushes that will survive in sun or shade (we have a lot of trees in our yard), drought or standing water, and require no pruning or maintenance." They helped us find exactly what we needed :) I will actually probably be posting some pics this weekend if you want to check them out!

  10. Have you tried desert plants? The kind that can live without water and survive in draught? Like a cactus without the needles?

  11. Yes, hit the nursery and look for someone intelligent, and ask them what to get.

  12. We're pretty helpless with the yard here. We pull weeds and mow and all that - but it's not pretty.

I'm thinking about calling a pro.

  13. Things I like that don't take much effort: Hostas, Hydrangeas, Rhodedendrums, Japanese Maple shrubs, azaleas, and lavender. Good luck!

  14. Good luck! We did the same thing! (Black mulch, though...) I *MAY* attempt plants next year... we'll see. :)

  15. Oh fun!! A blank canvas! Find out what zone you are in and find some low maintenance plants oh and a weed barrier. Put that barrier down prior to putting new woodchips on it!

  16. I stopped gardening when everything of value withered up and died in August. Which is weird because the grass all died in the yard but stayed alive in the garden beds. I don't get it.

  17. when in doubt - hostas. there are many different varieties, with different colored leaves, and they get BIG...so a very impressive display no matter what. they are foolproof. some also bloom. they look good with coral bells - also different kinds of leaf colors and also bloom - also foolproof.
Both are perennials - so plant 'em once, walk away.
you can always fill in with a few impatiens (also foolproof AND cheap) each year - that way you are not stuck with same color year after year, after year...

  18. I never thought I was good at it, but then I tried some container gardening and it just sort of took off from there. I do prescribe to "stupid" gardening, which means I plant a sure fire winner, in the right place and water it. I have become obsessed with it! You might love it too, being a mom, gardening is such great therapy. After all when a plant is not working out you can move it, or cut it down, you can even pull it out, you can't do that with your kids!!! I'm looking foward to what you will do with your nice clean plot!! Good luck!

  19. RoreBore sounds good enough to hire. I plant some stuff out back, but it doesn't do very well. Phin handles the front yard, which means he hires lawn guys. I don't get lawns, but it's the suburbs so it's the law. Sorry I'm no help, but it sounds nice that you guys have a project.

  20. Nope, I stink at the garden thing too, but I do love to throw down the red chips. They give the appearance that more has been done than has been done.

  21. I have confederate roses in my yard, you can't kill them.
