Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Surprise Visitors

It never fails.

The house is sparkling clean. No one shows up.

The house looks like a tornado has gone through it?

Suddenly everyone wants to drop by.

I’m not one of those people who have the house immaculate all the time. I try. But I also have kids who sometimes feel like the contents of their rooms belong downstairs.

Or I’ll give them a snack and crumbs wind up all over the place as though they’re making a special trail out of Cheerios.

This is usually when we have company.

Why can’t they come when I’ve just cleaned? Why? I always want to say, “We don’t live like this, I swear. Well, I mean, we DO live like this but I clean better. It’s just, sometimes I like to wait until the kids are in bed because if I clean when they are awake, there’s NO POINT.”

My house is clean as I type this.

Want to know who is going to drop by?

No one.

Give it an hour and Natalie will have all her dress up clothes strewn over the floor because she “can’t decide what Princess she wants to be today.”

And then, suddenly, it’ll be a reunion.

  2. This made me laugh because it happens to me ALL the time. Why can't people come over during my productive weeks?

  3. UGH - SO TRUE. Happens here all the time. Luckily the only people who visit us are usually family and that helps ease the mortification.

  4. It is a Murphy's Law thing. Clean house...no visitors. Messy house...time for entertaining.

  5. I'm right there with you!!

Someone on facebook posted a picture that said "Please excuse the mess, the children are creating memories". I swear I'm going to get that embroidered on every throw pillow!! :)

  6. That's why I don't like surprise visits! I've been know to ignore the door bell and belly crawl into another room.

  7. My neighbors are the worst about this! And they are super judgy about it, so it's awesome. Once, our dog had a tube sock on his foot attached with painters tape because he had a gash on his paw from walking on the ice and I didn't want him bleeding on my white carpet. You would have thought I sent out an invitation since my entire street showed up about 42 seconds after I put that dang sock on and he started limping around. It was really classy.

  9. So true. Happens to me every time. My place is really small too, and open, only the two bedrooms and bathrooms can not be seen as soon as you walk in the door, so I can not even hide stuff and keep the common area clean ,as it is ALL the common area. Blargh.

  11. I couldn't help but laugh, I can so relate to this! Happens to me all the dang time and I hate it.
There truly is no point in cleaning when the kids are awake, it's like shoveling the snow off the sidewalk during a snow storm.

  12. I hate surprised visitors too...but it's usually my family telling me they're coming to visit hours before they get here and will be staying for days. It drives me crazy because I have change my plans to accommodate them. P.S. This is happening to me this weekend.

  13. I have finally decided that if it is clean in the morning when I wake up and at night when I go to bed, that's about the best I can hope for!
