Non Coordinating

We had family pictures taken yesterday.

Not from a studio, like we usually do.

But from a photographer who knows what she’s doing. I know very little about lighting and all of that, so I wanted to find someone who did. The photographer is a military spouse, which I loved.

Anyway, I had no clue what I was going to wear. Jeans? A dress? A sweater? Jeans? Yes, I went back to the jeans and decided on them. We are not a fancy family. We also are not a coordinating family. I see these photos where everyone is wearing the same shade of purple or blue or yellow and I’m like…cute, but not for us. Gymboree, one of my favorite children’s stores, offers parent versions of a line and I cringe and think, “Never.” It’s just not our style. I think it’s cute when others do it but it’s not for us.

So I already knew we wouldn’t match.

Fine.

I found a top for Tommy and some nice-ish pants.

I ordered Natalie a dress from Etsy that I was worried would not make it in time.

Tom said he’d wear, “Whatever.” I said so long as it wasn’t one of his shirts with words on it. I didn’t think our family would want to see him wear a shirt that says, “Only Chuck Norris Can Prevent Forest Fires,” or “Save the trees! Wipe your ass with an owl!”

I wound up wearing jeans and a green sweater because I look okay in green. (I tend to look pale and sickly in black, which stinks, because black is slimming.) Then I realized, crap, could I wear my Sketchers? Or did I need fancier shoes? I ended up finding a pair of boots stuffed back into my closet. I bought them awhile back when I wanted to try and be fashionable for like 5 minutes. Then I got bored with the idea and the boots were forgotten. I am not a shoe person.

So how did the photos turn out?

Well, I'll write more about that this week and will share some.

(I'm not being stingy. I really don't have the photos yet.)

  2. Can't wait to see the photos! We've never done official family photos ... I think the last photo of us a s family is like 4 or 5 years old.

  3. I'm sure the photos will look great. The last time I had proper photos done was my graduation, maybe I should look into it again.

  6. Looking forward to your next post with pictures. I'm sure they came out looking great. Coordination is over rated. I mean come on, there isn't even coordination in clothes anymore if you look at the latest fashion magazines. Of which, I think Redbook is as close to a fashion magazine as I get. :-)

  7. I can so relate! We're the family that is scrambling around to find anything presentable for my youngest son, as he only wears jeans and sweatpants. I've given up on buying anything nice, because it gets outgrown before it gets worn. Did I mention that I am lousy at planning ahead and this is why the problem arises in the first place? I'll bet your pictures came out great anyway...coordination is overrated!

  8. I can't wait to see the photos! It's been years since we've had professional family photos done. The last two times I've taken them myself. The first time was the best... we all wore black shirts and blue jeans.

  9. I'm sure you all looked wonderful. Having the family picture is all that mattered. I can't wait for the "big reveal". I need to add family pictures to my to-do list! Our last family picture was 7 years ago :(

  10. I think it's lame when everyone is in the same outfit in family pictures! Colour coordinated - okay, that's fine, but exact same colours? LAME. I'm sure your pics are great!

  11. I know how you feel. We are planning on a photo shoot this spring because I won a $1,000 grand prize from a photographer. It's going to expire in May....I've had it for a while. I can't decide what the heck to have everyone wear. I'm so lame. hahaha.

Can't wait to see your pictures!

  13. I'm sure the pictures will be amazing! Even more so because you aren't all color coordinated.

But....what do you mean you aren't a "shoe person?" This, as an ardent shoe lover, I cannot comprehend.

  14. Aww, I was so looking forward to a pic at the end. Can't wait to see how it turned out!

And I could probably stand to be a little less of a shoe person myself.

  15. I am glad you put the disclaimer in at the end because i also want to see the pic. We had family pics done and I hear you. We opted for jeans and white shirt and after that it was open to interpretation.

  17. Oooh, can't wait to see the final photos!!
We are not a matchy family either. We just don't come to the table that way!

  18. I think it is nice that you weren't all matchy, matchy. I mean matching can be a nice thing. But, maybe doing something different could be a nice change. I am sure they are going to turn out amazing.

  19. Not matching just coordinating is totally the thing to do with pictures now. The matching pictures really has become a thing of the past.

So sounds like you did it perfectly.
