I’ve written about book abuse before.
I hate when people fold down the corners of pages in a library book. It doesn’t belong to them; therefore they don’t have the right. If it’s your book, by all means, go nuts. But a library book needs a bookmark. I cringe when I see a page folded down when I’m reading a library book.
I also cringe when I see this:
I have to hope that it’s smeared food and not, well, poop.
Or blood.
Yuck.
Why can’t people take care of library books? I never have one around food. I treat them with care.
Some folks have said to me, “I don’t check out library books because who knows where they’ve been?” Yes, this is true. But I promised my husband I’d cut back on book purchases so off to the library I go. I pretend that the borrowers before me have taken the time to care for their books as I do.
And then I see a stain like the one above and I’m like, “GAG!”
So again. Take care of books that do not belong to you!

agreed!
ReplyDeleteOne time, my hardback VC Andrews novel borrowed from the library was on my coffee table. And my daughter, who had strep throat, threw up and missed the bowl. Yep. All over the book. It got thrown in the garbage and I just paid for another copy for the library. The librarian thanked me for not trying to return it with vomit in it. Supposedly, some people try to do this.
YES! To this whole post ... another reason I love my Kindle ... lol
ReplyDeleteI have to use the library, too. Otherwise, I'd spend waaay too much on books. But yes, sometimes I'm a little grossed out.
ReplyDeleteMy mom found a booger in a library book once and has never visited the library again. She just buys all her books because that is just pure grossness.
ReplyDeleteYou have to put up with people. And sometimes in the library you find books that you never would have picked otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with this more! Ugh I can't stand when people toss around books, dog-ear the pages, or spill things on them. Oh my gosh does it drive me nuts.
ReplyDeleteI started using the library for my kindle, to help avoid having to go to the libaray and dirty books.
ReplyDeleteEEekkk... Those marks gross me out too! The folding down corners don't bug me as much but any sort of stain - disgusting!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you. This a pet peeve of mine as well. By the way, if you are a Civil War era buff, you might like " The Union Quilters" by Jennifer Chiaverini. Even if you are not a quilter. Her books are amazing. Another one of her books is "Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker". She is really good with using history with fiction. I learned a lot from her.
ReplyDeleteHere, here! The stains of the unknown bother me more than anything. Half priced book stores are a godsend. They may be slightly used, but they are for the most part- stain free. Otherwise Amazon and Kindle are always a backup.
ReplyDeleteI like having the book on hand for a reread when I forget things. I often forget things.
I agree!! I LOOOOOVVVEEE reading books. My husband keeps threatening to get me a Kindle so that I will stop bringing them home. I have little collections all over the house... and boxes in our storage shed. Because one never knows when you want to re-read them!
ReplyDeleteMy mother taught us at a young age to respect the library books. They're for all to enjoy, not for a few to destroy. jerks.
I agree with everything you said. Can't do library books anymore either. Another reason is because I always put off returning them.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! I love my library books and get so sad when people misuse them.
ReplyDeleteFrom someone who works in a library: I say AMEN!!
ReplyDeleteSome books I've gotten from my local library smell like coffee or cigarette smoke. They have hair or food in them, coffee or water stains, the spine falling apart etc, etc, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt's disgusting.
I agree! I used to work in a library and you wouldn't believe what people use as book marks, either! Toilet paper, cheese (in the wrapper), floss, tampon wrapper.....
ReplyDeletePlease, please take care of your library books!
I've gotten over the dog ears because, relatively speaking, they are so much less disturbing than those smudge marks of unknown origin. Right with you there!
ReplyDeleteAMEN!!! Food, blood, cigarette smoke!!! YUCK!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree! Take care of your library books! Love the iBooks app bc I can download a free sample, then if I like it, get it from the library. (If I can wait that long!)
ReplyDeleteYes. Eww. So gross. It's definitely ketchup. Nothing more. Definitely.
ReplyDeleteSo gross! It's probably chocolate or something. I often eat chocolate while reading a good book! I tend not to smear it in, though..
ReplyDeleteOh I totally agree!! Major pet peeve- I also hate when people fold paperbacks because it makes the books weaker and they end up falling apart!
ReplyDeleteEWWWW!! I cannot imagine mistreating a library book! That is just awful!-Ashley
ReplyDeleteI am TERRIFIED of what that stain is on your book.
ReplyDeleteMy books used to always be swollen because I'd read in the bathtub and inevitably drop them. These were MY books though! And that never happens any more because who has time for a bath?!
OMG - that pic is exactly why I don't go to the library.
