That Time I Watched Girl Meets World With My Kids

I had been saving the episodes of Girl Meets World since June.

I knew I wanted to watch them with the kids.

It took a couple of months, but I finally decided, yes, it's time.

Before starting the show, I said, "I used to watch a show just like this when I was young. It was called Boy Meets World. It was about Cory, who is now a teacher, and father to Riley, who is one of his students. He fell in love with Topanga--yes, Natalie?"

Natalie had raised her hand. She does this sometimes.

"Topanga is a weird name. Why?" she asked.

I blinked. "That's just her name. Her parents were a little odd. She was a little odd. But Cory didn't care. She gave Cory his first kiss--"

"Ew!" Natalie said, wrinkling her nose.

"ANYWAY. The point is, I watched Cory and Topanga grow up. I grew up with them."

"You watched the dad in high school? Are you all old now?" Tommy wanted to know.

I blinked again. "I mean....I wouldn't use the word OLD..ANYWAY. Let's begin."

So we watched the first three episodes. Tommy was like, "What? They're in seventh grade and they all have PHONES? I don't have a phone yet and I'm in seventh grade."

Natalie was like, "Are these middle school problems?"

Tommy was like, "They're in DETENTION?! I've never been in detention because I listen."

Natalie was like, "Is Lucas going to kiss Riley? Or is Riley going to kiss Lucas?"

But they liked the show! Tommy said it was cool that they were in seventh grade, but that his teachers weren't like Cory. And also, he didn't have a history class, because it was called social studies.

Natalie was glad to know about middle school problems.

I didn't mind the show either. Sometimes shows on The Disney Channel make me want to tear my ears off. This one wasn't bad. Yes, obviously it had its eye roll moments, but it's because I'm an adult.

So go watch Girl Meets World if you haven't.

Remember what it was like seeing Cory and Topanga get together? Remember the break ups? Remember when she almost got together with Andrew KEEGAN?

Ahh, Cory and Topanga.

I watched Cory and Topanga fall in love. Now I'll watch them raise a seventh grader. Maybe I'll get some tips. You guys do know that the middle school world scares me, after all.

I'm glad they made it.

(Tommy was like, "Are these people real? You're talking like these people are real." "No son. Mommy gets attached to characters in books. And characters in shows and movies. Plus, you do know that your parents met in high school, right?")

  4. I must have been too old for the original because I never saw it. I've heard about it, though. Lucy just started middle school this year, so I think she'd probably love this! (but she will feel ripped off she doesn't have a phone either!) --Lisa

  7. It's funny...I never thought Topanga was a weird name because I grew up with her. I wish I had kids to watch the new version with. It's awesome that you get to do that.

  15. That high school photo is gold!
It does make me feel a bit old to see Cory like that, but only a little!
I've been feeling older lately. I hope that reverses.
    Also, this exchange was hilarious!
I would figure someone would have a Topanga comment!

  22. I never watched Boy Meets World -- I don't think we had the Disney channel back then.
But his is why I stick with Super Hero shows and Scooby Doo. They are easy to explain: it's always a guy in a costume.

  23. I've been meaning to watch this. Don't think I can convince my boys to join me though! Love the comments from your kids - SO funny!

  24. I loved Boy Meets World and I knew there was something coming out but I hadn't seen anything because on Spark, they still play episodes of Boy Meets World so I thought it was just that they were talking about. I wonder if my daughter would like it!

  26. I was THRILLED and totally geeked out when I saw this was going to be a show. It's definitely gotten the Disney treatment but overall, it's not too bad. My daughter, who is the same age as yours, enjoys it and it's nice to have a show we can watch together and doesn't make me want to throw things at the TV.

  29. I have to admit, I've never watched either one of these shows. Although I sort of remember them being mentioned here and there. I guess I have some catching up to do. What a beautiful H.S. picture by the way.

  30. My oldest watches it but I haven't sat down and watched a whole episode with her. Some of those shows your right; drive me right up the wall. My youngest watched something the other day that wasn't too bad. Definitely a different show then what we watched as kids.

  35. I used to watch boy meets world, and Topanga was my favorite character. I've seen her on other shows as well and I think she is so funny. But I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to watch Girl Meets World. Plus I don't think my son would ever go for that. He's more into Spongebob.
