Different Moods I Encounter When Doing Homework With My Kids

Homework. I hate doing it with the kids. But if I don't, they might not do it. Then they'll never graduate and never leave the house. So I sit there with them, making sure it's done. I experience all sorts of moods.

Impatience. Does it really take a half hour to do one page of homework?

Confusion. Don't ask me how to do that Common Core math crap. I can barely do the regular math crap. But when you ask me to write a number sentence or figure out a problem using a double ten frame, I'm out. I am not smarter than a fifth grader. Sorry.

Annoyance. What's with all the excuses? No, you do NOT need to stand on your head right now, you need to finish writing your sentences. It's not the proper time to do a jig. Finish you work so Mommy can read!

More impatience. Why does it take this long to read a paragraph? I love to read. I was reading IT by the fifth grade for God's sake! So why don't my children love reading as I do? Why aren't they picking it up as I did?

Excitement. Homework is finally finished! Yes!

But then SADNESS appears, because a kid is like, "Oh wait. I forgot I had to do THIS page too..."

Homework.

I wish it didn't exist.

  2. omg i know. it's horrifying how much kids HATE homework. i get it - homework is boring as shit but damn, it's ONE PAGE or FOUR SENTENCES or PATTERNS. how hard can that be?

kayla used to rush through it and it was messy as hell so now i'm tiger mom bitch and tell her: you do it right or i will erase the whole thing and make you do it TWICE. AND NO TV AFTER THAT BECAUSE YOU SCREWED AROUND WITH YOUR HOMEWORK.

  3. Oh I can relate to this! Today is homework day because we're too busy this weekend. I am dreading it! I can't do math to save my life, I'm always like "Errr, I'm not really sure" and then my 11 year old ends up teaching ME (or trying to, I just kind of switch off when it comes to math.. always have done)

  4. Bahaha. Basically sums up why I decided not to be a teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I go through these myself and I feel like I have failed massively in the reading department although I read to both of them! But our son and reading get along like cows and ballet!

  6. We are not there yet but I'm afraid. I wonder when she'll realize she knows more than me in basic math and science. High school? Middle school? 4th grade??

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think things are much different than they were when I was in school. I never had much homework and my parents never, ever helped me with it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. HAHAHAHA! Even as a homeschool mom, I have experienced these moods multiple times!

    ReplyDelete
  9. LMBO I know what you mean :) My eldest is in all honors, she's in the seventh grade, so…. I'm trying REAL hard to act like I know what she's doing :D Thank goodness for Khan academy.
    XOXO

  10. I deal with this at our house too. I HATE homework

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't ever remember my mom helping me with homework in elementary school haha. I don't even remember getting homework, though I'm sure we did ;) Come middle/high school, I never ever got help!

    But yes, I get it.

  12. I'm not there yet, but gah... doesn't sound like fun ;)

  13. ONE of the good things about the boys getting older, is not having to do homework anymore. I hated every second of it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. OMG! You are so right! Nikki does homework on her own now and hates to show it (although she's having to start to since she's been doing badly on tests in math lately). But Jonathan? He needs to be sat next to so that he will keep working. He knows how to do it all, but he can't sit still. And he comes up with tons of excuses.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I do not miss the days of having to sit at the table during homework time!!! Now the boys are self-sufficient and only need help occasionally - as long as it's math or science I'm good anything else I'm pretty much no help.

  16. Exhibit p of why I cannot/don't want to have children.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm not looking forward to homework with my independent, stubborn kindergartener.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm trying to figure out why my kindergartener needs homework.

    ReplyDelete
  19. hahahaa..the Arnold gif, too good. I don't get it- I always did my homework on my own. No one checked it, no one helped me, I was on my own. You're a great mom

    ReplyDelete
  20. And this is why I'm so glad my kids do their homework at their after-school program! On days they are home, I hate it!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I almost died when I read this post. I read IT in 5th grade too! Wow.

    And yeah, CCSS math? Impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Omgosh lady. I need to send you a bottle of wine! I don't know how you do it and keep up with the blog. Super Amber.

  23. Awesome post, very funny. Reminded when my son had to do his math homework today. What a battle

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm in the middle of having to help or guide them into completing homework as I have 2 in highschool who are pretty much independent and 2 little ones. I do however remember random days of having to help. The patience is quickly stolen.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i understand its challenging. I remember my Mom, used to bribe us with candies if we finished out homework.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love the friends gif, it's perfect there! My kindergartner doesn't have real homework yet. I'm not looking forward to it, especially since research is showing there's no benefit to it in elementary school.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Awww, loved this post! I understand it can become a bit challenging. Now I understand my mother's former pain

    ReplyDelete
  28. I feel like confussion will be the biggest for me esepecially when they start getting into math.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Luckily, I never get to take care of my kid's homework. Too much of a headache and I have happily tasked my hubby that. Yay!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. This made me giggle! It's refreshing to read a blog post where someone is pretending to be the perfect parent!

    ReplyDelete
  31. NOW, I understand why there was so much yelling when it came time for my parents to help me with my homework. I will pray for you. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  32. lol I think you have it all covered! I never had help with my homework, so throughout those different moods realise you are also been extremely supportive of your children and they will thank you and treasure these moments when they are older :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Though I am not a parent yet I definitely witnessed this during the few times I asked helped from my parents for homework. It somehow pushed me to strive harder for myself and eventually learned to do them myself or find other ways to get help.

  36. Those are almost the same reactions I have at work!

    ReplyDelete
  37. This is amazing, lol :) My kids aren't even school aged yet but I feel your pain!! The videos are too funny! -Erin at www.stayathomeyogi.com

  38. This is hilarious. I am fortunate that homework time has always been effortless on my part in out house.

    ReplyDelete
  39. LOL! Impatience can happen because we all want to be doing other things. But, good to have someone there to help to do these things.

    ReplyDelete
  40. haha...i didn't mind doing homework with my kids. funny thing is my parents never did homework with me. i guess things were different back then...lol.

    ReplyDelete
  41. haha this is hilarious! but sadly, I was one of those kids that just took forever to do homework, my mom got lucky because my older sister always had to help me.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hahaha I can relate. helping my friends daughter with her spelling homework can sometimes take a toll on my nerves. And i'm a nerd...lol

    ReplyDelete
  43. I like the "confusion" one! I know my parents thought that one with some strange homework assignments I had as a child!

    ReplyDelete
  44. We haven't entered the world of homework yet, but I fear it. I'm not sure what I'll think of common core. I also worry about too much homework too soon for younger kids.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Lol. I've been there. I am so glad that both my kids are grown ups. The first one is married and the other one is in his last year in college.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I remember, I hate doing homeworks when I was a student and my mom didn't help me.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I need more patience for my kindergarten, he is so lazy to do the homework.

    ReplyDelete
  48. hahaha i would hate that too. it's like we finally got out of school now we have to go and TRY to remember all those things we didnt want to remember.

    ReplyDelete
  49. haha, sounded like my house when the kids were growing up.. ah those were the days, that I don't miss I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I deal this at our house too sometimes. But I was lucky that my grade 2 kid will do his homework by himself. I like the Excitement" one and then realized "Sadness" hahaha!Life of a parent!

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is nice to know I am not alone. My oldest never has homework, but my 7 year old...I get so frustrated with the common core Math. Too many extra steps to get the answer. Why can't we just add the numbers instead of adding the tens and then the ones adding the partial sum...ahhhhhh

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was homeschooled 5th grade to my senior year so in that time period all my homework was just schoolwork. I remember math being my worst subject though, even in college! I don't have kids yet but have zero interest in helping them with homework. I hope when the time comes I can try to have a better attitude but lucky for me , my husband is good at math so maybe we'll be okay ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  53. This made me laugh. I don't have children but I can imagine my parents going through the same emotions especially when it came it Maths.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My parents never helped me with homework but yes when i see my sister helping her kids i actually see all these things.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I've never ask my parents for help with homework and I didn't have problem with school but my brother always wanted a help and he has problems later

    ReplyDelete
  56. haha! Too funny!! My son is only 4 months but im dreading the day we have to start homework! Ugh! Common core? no, thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Your post made by evening! Loved reading it! My nephew is in 2nd standard and my sister is going through the same phase!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Ha! I struggle with homework as well and they're still in preschool, I can only imagine how it's going to be like as the years pass! I should start practicing my poker face now in case I become impatient, lol!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Haha I enjoyed this! My eldest will soon be starting school. Sounds like I have lots to look forward too.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hahahaha oh dear the struggle is real for you parents indeed. I used to help my brother and he enjoyed pissing me off because he knew he could do it he just liked to see his sister loosing her shit lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hahahaha.. so true! I've experienced such moods many times! It is a difficult job sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This was so funny and true.I also wish my little girl would get it find so I can read.Perfect readin

    ReplyDelete
  63. Does this apply to husbands too? Lol. Don't forget the animals. It's the whole house.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I homeschool, so those moods happen daily here! I think sometimes I have it easier, because I go through the teaching process with them instead of just getting the homework at the end of the day, after they have been in school for 8 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  65. My friend continuously gets upset while doing hw with her daughter. I guess the frustration is you expect them to know certain things already.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Haha! You are dead on point! I can relate!

    ReplyDelete
  67. This definitely sounds like some people I know with kids when it comes to homework time

    ReplyDelete
  68. Being a mom of two I can almost relate with your experience when it comes to handling homework. Impatience & Confusion are the common moods that I encounter, but at the end the excitement overtakes all when task is done!

    ReplyDelete
  69. My kids always go through different mood swings when it comes to their schoolwork. I completely understand.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have a son and I always make sure that I am hands on in teaching him his lessons at home. I find this funny tho coz sometimes I can relate.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hahaha too funny!!!! I use to make my mom help me with my homework all the time! She hated it lol

    ReplyDelete
  72. Lol, funny cuz it's true! You have captured each mood I went through perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Bwwwwwahahahhaha! those gifs are hilarious! I can totally relate. We spend so much energy trying to get out of school and probably forget most of what we know. then we have to struggle remember it all for the kids

    ReplyDelete
  74. Homework! UGH!! I feel your pain and you captured the essence of it as parents and kids. I have to agree...I wish it did not exist.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I am so lucky coz most of the time my son don't need my help doing his homework.. I loved the excitement part.. Lol.. I relate much then suddenly get's sad because I forgot there's more homework to do when I was studying..

    ReplyDelete
  76. Some nights I wish that homework did not exist either. I really feel like they drag enough of it home that they should've done in school that day.

    ReplyDelete
  77. preach it lady preach my daughter is 11 and going into the 5th grade. I had all kinds of emotions seeing your tweet I even grumppped and thought it's to early my kid don't go back until Sept 6 but you have me thinking I do at least need to brush up on some math with her before school starts. Oh she might hate me for this lol I'll blame you and show her your post.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Haha I hate homework with my kids. Plus it's so embarrassing when I don't the answer to 2nd grade homework

    ReplyDelete
  79. Totally feel you... I keep on wonder.. why my kiddos homework never ever finish.. sigh~

    ReplyDelete
  80. Math, oh how I hate math homework. Oh the tears and the I can't do this. Yep homework is a punishment for parents.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm right there with you! I have to do it otherwise they may not, and there are times that I wonder how I got enrolled in school with them LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I LOVE THIS POST!! I understand how you feel. My Mom couldn't help me with high school algebra so I got a tutor then I just barely passed it. In college I got A's in algebra because I had a great teacher. I don't know why the educational system has to money around with math. They need to keep it simple!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I always tell myself that I would go through the same thing when I have kids someday. It's so funny seeing everything that I imagined in a blog post :-)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Soooooo.... most research out there supports your notion of no homework!! I don't know why schools continue to push for it when it is clear it isn't effective.

    ReplyDelete
  85. This was my older son. Thankfully the last two don't need my help with homework other than explainations.

    ReplyDelete
  86. LOL! My nephew will cry and throw temper tantrums because of having to use his brain for other than playing video games and watching his cartoons. And yet, he is such a smart young man.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Haha! As a former teacher I have to say I wish homework didn't exist either. I agree with the overwhelming sadness when realizing we had more to do!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Impatience is certainly the worst part of it. I didn't get any help with homework because neither of my parents finished school... but then it fell on me to help my 4 younger siblings with theirs. I fully feel your frustration!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Urgh I used to hate homework from school, it was like you would be there all week then have to do more lol..

    ReplyDelete
  90. OMG I laughed so hard at this - relatable. YEP my kids still many nights. FFS. No you do not need a break. (High school BTW) My girls both have IEPs and one has ADD and I so get this. It's hard. Homework sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  91. All parents go through this situation..patience and preparations are the answers ..
    God bless you

    ReplyDelete
  92. Totally understand to help children with the home need lot of patience. The key is make it a fun thing to do together and let them look forward. It will turn out to be a great bonding time too.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I can totally understand your feeling, it is like war of words and fight yelling screaming happens when they start doing homework. Especially my daughter get hungry when you ask her to do homework.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I am dreading the day when I start helping my son with homework--- yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  95. The gifs to go along with each point really made me laugh! I am thankful my mom was super patient and I think secretly enjoyed helping haha.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Haha I love this! As a mum of five I hear you! Homework when you have kids is hard going, I get so impatient!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yeah you'd never find my mother helping me with homework, but I try to learn what the kids are being taught and help where I can. Its definitely different but I see why Common Core is needed. Many kids from my generation, myself included knew how to do the math, but didn't know how to apply it to real life. So thats what they are trying to do, only our grown up brains just can't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Girl I have been there! Sometimes I just want to set their homework on fire.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Haha, indeed a lot of patience is needed! I keep on grinning while reading this as I imagine my cousin telling me this based on her experience with her kids. Lol!

    ReplyDelete
  100. I can relate! Sometimes our kids can be so annoying and most of the time it is when doing their homework. Probably because they don't want to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Unfortunately, it's gotten to the point that I can't help my kids. The new way of math makes no sense and is not helping them to learn it easier, it's actually making it so much more complicated. I refuse to learn this new way so that I can help them, and unfortunately, that makes it harder on my kids.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Ha! I remember when I had to teach a cousin of her homework. It was really hard because she is not paying attention. The best feeling is when the homework is finished. lol!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Its so annoying and sometimes I feel like its a mental torture. Thanks for google and wikipedia. Kids are capable for doing their homework by own.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Having patience can definitely be something I could improve on now.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I gotta give it to parent you have to have a lot of patience. But I can understand from a kid point of view too some of the stuff they are learning in school can be hard like I didnt learn some of this stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  106. My son isn't old enough to be getting this kind of homework yet, but I don't know what I'm going to do when he does! I have seen the common core math and I have no idea what any of it means. Nice to see I'm not the only one!

    ReplyDelete
  107. There are definitely so many emotions as parents that we go through when it is homework time. I know for me frustration at the new ways of math are a huge one for me!

    ReplyDelete
  108. It can get completely crazy, I should know, I'm a teacher and it's tough to read the kids' moods as well when studying. I'm sure a lot of parents can relate to this post!
