Why I Didn't Go To The Air Force Ball

The Air Force ball was Saturday. I didn't go. I know if my husband gets up in rank that he'll have to play the game and make appearances. But for now? I'll pass.

1. I'm an introvert. Being around a bunch of people and having to make small talk terrifies me. I usually say something bizarre like, "Henry VIII had very nice calves." Then people around me have expressions on their faces like:

2. I can't walk in heels properly. I look like freshly born calf when I'm wearing them. People assume I'm drunk when I smack into a wall, attempting to regain my balance.

3. I feel uncomfortable in a dress. I'm a pants kinda girl. I always worry a boob is going to somehow pop out while in a dress. I worry I won't sit properly and someone will see my undies. Don't worry, I would never pull a Britney Spears. When Tom and I renewed our vows, I got all done up. It was nice but...weird.

4. I'm not the neatest eater. Usually whenever I consume food, some of it winds up on me. My husband finds this amusing. I try to eat slow, and I still get a crumb on my nose. I don't even know how. Or I spill my drink down my front.

5. I'm clumsy. I'll knock my drink all over the table. I just KNOW it. (See above.)

6. I get the giggles at inappropriate times. At a military ball, important people give speeches. Important people who are high ranking. Important people who are my husband's boss. And sometimes I suddenly find this amusing, and I can't stop laughing. I don't know why. Maybe because I'm terribly uncomfortable? I know it's not appropriate to giggle behind the cloth napkin. I'm frantically trying to pinch my thighs so I'll stop.

7. I'd rather be at home in my sweats without a bra, stuffing my face with fast food. The food you're given at military balls is usually some kind of chicken that you have to neatly cut and take thoughtful bites of. I like to cram my face with fries and lick my fingers. I guess I'm not a proper lady. Oops.

Do you go to military balls? Or if you aren't military, do you like to dress up and go to events?

  1. I haven't been to one yet. I get social anxiety bad so it does scare me! The dress stuff is no problem tho. I love to dress up!

  2. No military balls here, but my friend went over the weekend with her husband and was weirded out by having to dress up!
I'm like you - I get the giggles. I forgot how to walk in heels. I like being home. I do like to get dolled up every now and then, though.

  3. I have been to 7 haha, I actually really enjoy them. We've been lucky that all of Kyle's units have been full of awesome people.

  4. I like people, really I do, but I agree that these kinds of events - where you are thrown together with people you probably have nothing more in common with than the fact that you are both military spouses - can be awkward and stressful. It can be fun to a certain point, and up until that point I am an absolute delight. then I just want to get the heck out of there, but since I can't because hubby is in HIS element.... meet me at the bar.

  5. I don't mind the dressing up, as long as I can leave the heels at home. But I'm not really comfortable in social situations with lots of people. I'd rather stay home with my sweats on too!

  6. I love events like that probably because I rarely have to do them. I never wear heels, because of a foot problem and although I can't wear sneakers I always choose flats. I used to love getting ready, now I get stressed always due to time, but I don't mind the people. Although I don't go to cafes, or clubs( except if it is for a gig) or anything really except theater and concerts I love getting to know people. Again probably because I don't do it often.
You mentioned your children were stubborn potty trainees too!! Did you find out any tricks to make the process easier?

  8. I would have loved that when I was younger! But the older I get, the more I am just a sit at home in sweats kind of girl. I'm with you!

  12. Long ago, when I dated a Marine, I really wanted to go. It sounded so fancy and glamorous. I rarely get dressed up but I do like the chance every once in a while. Then again, getting "dressed up" for a benefit this weekend, just meant my nicer jeans, cowboy boots, and a sparkly necklace with a tank that I sometimes sleep in. Ha!

  13. HAHA I love getting dressed up and going to events, but I can be a total introvert as well...! Me being extroverted comes out at random times. But if I met you at a ball or something and you told me that Henry VIII had nice calves, I would make you be my new bestie!! Hilarious!!

  14. I love going to the Marine Corps ball, but as a Marine myself, it really is celebrating our Corps' birthday!!! Semper Fi!

  15. Haha, I agree with so many of these but I'm still looking forward to the Navy birthday ball in October. I will have the added "adventure" of trying to sneak off to manually pump during the ball since I'm still breastfeeding (oh joy)...

  16. I don't mind them actually! I enjoy getting dressed-up, seeing the institution at its finest, and participating in a tradition. Learning to walk in heels comes with time (or different shoes ;) ) and don't worry about the rest, because chances are most of the other people feel the same!

  17. I don't necessarily mind dressing up and going to events but you're spot on with a lot of reasons why I'm apprehensive. I HATE wearing heels and I don't have a lot of couth.

  18. I have been to one Navy Ball, and a few Dining Outs. I hated the Navy Ball. Granted I was 8 months pregnant, and wanted to eat, but they didn't serve dinner until well past my usual dinner time.

  19. In 15 years I've never been to one.

  20. I"d like to dress up and go somewhere fancy every once in a while. My husband WOULD NOT! We are going to a nice dinner next month, though. It's a fundraiser for an organization I help out.

  21. This made me laugh! I fit in with most of them, but I go anyways. I think we'd look back and regret not going someday.

  23. I've been, but alas not with my husband - he never wanted to go to the Navy ball. I did just to experience it with my husband. It was so not his thing. So we didn't - and now he's out and I admit I am sad we missed out. I am not a "want to get dressed up all of the time" kind of person, but I LOVE heels and I can rock 'em LOL. And I definitely love getting dressed up every so often. I do events for a living, so it's fun for me.
