Reasons Why My Teenager's Room Stinks

Ah, teenagers. They can be a joy. Or they can be...frightening. What's with all the eye rolls? Why do they get offended if you ask about their day?

Why does their room smell weird?

Well, I have some ideas.

1. Maybe it's the pile of dirty clothes in the corner of the room. I tell my son to put them in the hamper, and he eventually will...when he runs out of underwear.

2. Ick, is that an old banana? An orange? I can't even tell anymore.

3. The sheets, perhaps? They should probably be washed. I'm not putting my nose against them to check though. I don't want to pass out.

4. When was the last time he washed his hair?

5. Wow, that's a thick layer of dust.

6. All the burping and farting that goes on in there doesn't help...

Bottom line? He needs to clean his room more often. He slacks on that part and doesn't mind living in filth. He claims his room "smells great." Meanwhile, I'm tempted to walk in with a pomander ball against my nose like they did in Henry VIII's time because of all the stank.

So if you have a teenager, does their room stink? Or do you have one of those neat teenagers? If you don't have teenagers, how was your room at that age? Mine was pretty messy, I won't lie. So I guess I'm being a hypocrite. But I swear, it didn't smell that bad...

  1. Oh god! This sounds awful.
Oh and girl, yes they stunk back then! Versailles was the worst. My history prof said the Asian traders regarding Europeans as whatever their slang word was for sh*t due to their lovely smell!! Lol

  2. I have a teenager, her room doesn't stink. Well, I take that back... when my dog is in there it stinks. He likes to bask in the girls' room on their little rug. When the sun begins to beam on his little funky bones the aroma rises to the air. The girls do not smell him, but I do. But then again, I have I a "super sniffer".

  4. My eldest daughter's room was disgusting, when she left home I wish I'd had a hazmat suit when I cleared through the remains of her bedroom. My youngest is untidy but her room is no way as bad.

When I was a teenager my room was disgusting. Don't know how I lived in such filth.

  5. 15 year old son here and his room stinks so bad. It was worse when the dogs would sleep in there. It doesn't help either when he comes home from football practice and sits in his computer chair.....I have to fabreeze the crap out of his room somedays.

  12. When I was a teenage, my mom makes sure that whenever it looks messy...I'm grounded. That's just the rule.

  13. You know what is strange is that I always thought that this was just guys, but no, I have a pre-teen girl and it is also the issue with her too!

  15. I had to stay on one of my children about her dirty room when my kids were growing up. I called it a pigsty. Wouldn't you know that now she's all grown up and is a cleanliness freak. Trust me - there's hope! :)

  16. All I can say is thank goodness my boys finally grew out of the mess I don't care stage. Swear they would have never got married if they didn't. Agree it is all the farting and the sheets they don't want to change.

  17. We are not quite to that stage yet but I am hoping I can keep the room from stinking too bad. You crack me up with this post because I do remember my brother's room smelling horrible when I was younger.

  21. Teens seem to hate cleaning their room, don't they? My son's room actually smells okay but it's always full of empty water bottles.

  22. Oh my gosh, yes. I've had two teenagers and the bedroom does stink. Thankfully, we are past these ages now.

  24. I have 5 years old son and his room is pretty tight and organized. We'll see how it will be once he is teenager! :)

  26. I have to admit I have been lucky enough to never come up against a stinky teen room. Though I do bet my other halves was when he was a teen.

  27. My brother's room used to smell everything terrifying when we were kids thankfully he's grown out of teenage habits

  28. Life can be sometimes a mystery when you have a teenager! I don’t remember my room stinking when I was a teen.

  29. I was messy as a teen, but I didn't have old food lying around and I believe I always put my laundry away. I just had a lot of clutter in my room.

  30. This is so funny and so relatable. My teen has a ferret so I know why her room stinks lol!

  31. Sounds about like every teenager I have ever met! It is a constant problem for sure!

  32. My sons' rooms are messy but not stinky. The first thing they do after coming home from where ever is to take a shower. They just can't stand the sweat and the odor. Now, if they'd only pick up their mess, we'll do fine.

  33. This is so funny! I am glad that my son's room is not stinking because i trained him to clean his room.

  34. I have tweens and I make sure to wash their bed sheets every weekend because if I don't the smell is strong!

  35. You just describe my 17yo room. I do have to get there anyways because my boys share a room. But sometimes I have to pray to not kick his....

  36. LOL oh gosh. Teenage boys are so gross! I am hoping my daughter doesn't do any of this when shes of that age. ha

  37. I know all about teenage boys because I have one. I work very hard to encourage hygiene and deodorant and he generally complies after the third time asking.

  38. ugh i am so not ready for this season ha - def a great one to pin for later

  39. Teen boys can be so stinky! I swear, it has to be one of the craziest phenomena!

  40. Teenagers can be pretty messy. We had a strict "no food" in the bedroom rule and that really helps! I always figured that it was up to my kids to keep their rooms clean once they were teens. However, they set their own standards, if I didn't like the way it looked, I could just shut the door. I used to wash the sheets once a week, but it was exhausting trying to get them all washed and put back on the bed in one day. (We have 5 kids.)

  41. My 12 year old niece lived with us for half the year last year and my gosh did her room ever stink! I don't know why either because she had to clean, sweep and dust regularly and wasn't allowed to eat in there. I swear, I could still smell the funk even 3 months after she moved out!

  42. I do have a teenager, but his room doesn't really stink. When I do smell a little something, I know it's time to wash his bed sheets and linens. LOL.

  43. I know that my kid's rooms have stunk from time to time. I've tried to teach them to keep it clean and to use the hamper too. I do my best to steam clean my carpets frequently too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I've got one with a clean room and one that lives in a hot mess. I'm not willing to sacrifice myself for a smell test though!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh I am so not looking forward to this with our oldest! Your posts always make me laugh and give me insight into what I will expect with my kids when they're the ages your kids are.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I hope my kids rooms won't be that stink :) I will keep this in mind! I definitely have to remind my kids to keep their rooms clean and organized.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Haha, this is too funny but also quite true. Teenage boys care less about hygiene especially when it comes to their rooms. I think it's something all moms can relate to.

  48. Is it a teenage boy thing? I remember when we moved and we were looking around the house and someone said don't mind the teenagers room.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I raised a girly girl for the most part and so her room smelled like perfume, make up, candles, and so many other sweet things. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I can say that most of the teenager guys like to live in filth but I guess teenager girls are more organized and neat as per my experience with my nieces. Though I'm not sure about others!
