"We could do a Bed and Breakfast...but what if the owner wants to talk with us over breakfast?" I said to my husband Tom. I shuddered.
He laughed. He knows how I am. An introvert. Someone who doesn't want to speak to anyone until after she's fully woken up.
"There are a lot of Bed and Breakfasts in Gettysburg. But what if we get a haunted room? I can't sleep if there's a ghost."
So that's why we decided not to go with a Bed and Breakfast when we went to Gettysburg. Instead I looked at regular hotels, and I found Quality Inn.
It was right in town! Behind it was the cemetery which yes, could mean ghosts, but I doubted it. I liked how it was close enough to walk through the town because parking could get tricky.
"And there's a pool!" Natalie said as I looked at pictures of the hotel.
"We aren't going to Gettysburg to swim," I reminded her.
She shrugged. "I know. But there's a pool." Her eyes were dreamy.
I decided to book our room at Quality Inn. There was a military discount, and the reviews were good. (No ghosts!)
Plus there was a Breakfast Cottage:
Is this not the cutest? It's where you went for the daily hot breakfast. It's a home built in the 1800s that was converted into a breakfast cottage.
"Imagine living here," Natalie marveled as she ate her waffle. "In this tiny little cottage."
"There's WiFi in here!" Tommy said excitedly.
The rooms were comfortable: two queen beds. Plus a balcony.
Not all rooms come with a balcony, but ours did, and I was able to watch the gorgeous sunset.
There were ample restaurants to pick from within walking distance. Tom's favorite was the Dairy Queen nearby. We don't have one super close to us in Texas, so it's where we went our first night there. You'll also find a variety of stores, museums, and ghost tours.
Oh, and yes, there's WiFi, something that is important to my kids.
You can also read about the history of the area, which I thought was pretty neat:
And yes, I took Natalie to the pool. She said it was "amazing and not too cold!"
Also, this was next door to the Breakfast Cottage but I never ventured inside.
Perhaps next time.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter wanted to do a ghost tour and thinks she would like to stay at a haunted place. Poor child would be staying there by herself. Maybe that will be her gradiation gift.
ReplyDeleteI love the cottage! And of course, kids are ALWAYS going to want to swim, if there's a pool available. LOL! I would definitely had to try out the Reliance Mine...looks scary...but interesting.
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I, too, am an introvert and I shy away from bed and breakfasts for that same reason!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I'm the same, I often try and order breakfast as room service if I can!

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely looking place to say, that pool looks amazing and I totally want to venture through that door and into the breakfast cottage!
ReplyDeleteOh man! Seems to have all of the charm of a bed-and-breakfast, without the conversation. I do admit that I love both bed-and-breakfasts and hotels, depending on my mood. Sometimes I'm in a breakfast cottage mood. And often I'm in a mood where I love to talk to people. Either way, I would definitely stay here.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a cool place to stay. I need to get myself to Gettysburg one of these days.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I'm glad Natalie made it to the pool after all! I actually love bed & breakfasts, but this hotel sounds like it worked perfectly for you!
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing so hard. I've said the exact same things to my husband about Staying at a B&B. I think you made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteSounds like great family time!
ReplyDeleteWe are hoping to take a trip that way in the next year or two. One of the things I was looking at trying to find was where we are going to stay. This really helps a lot.
ReplyDeleteQuality Inns are always the best, never been disappointed. That darling breakfast cottage is to die for.

ReplyDeleteThe whole time I was reading your article I thought abut this: "We're renting the rooms in our apartment for the long weekend. We're gonna be a Bed & Breakfast. So exciting." and imagine Linda Belcher being super enthusiastic about her Bed & Breakfast. The hotel you choosed looks so sweet, and I have to agree with Natalie, there is a pool :))
ReplyDeleteI feel scared at first knowing that there is a cemetery nearby. But when I see the sunset picture, who would not love to have that kind of view? Very calming place indeed plus the kids get to enjoy the wifi and pool. - ANOSA
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of the breakfast cottage! Such a unique and original thing for a hotel to do.

ReplyDeleteI love the idea for a bed and breakfast as a little weekend getaway. P.S I don't like small talking with anyone too early in the morning either. :-)

I always enjoyed your "what if" thoughts, its very entertaining. I used to have that with my boyfriend, and he said to me that I should minimize those thoughts because it spoils the fun... Which makes sense. Live the life everyday as he always says.
ReplyDeleteJust like your bed and breakfast experience, and btw I like the place you chose!
Oh I totally love the idea of a bed and breakfast! I have never visited one before.
