Why I Let My Daughter Be A Creepy Clown For Halloween

So I was chit chatting with some other mothers and the subject of Halloween was brought up. Someone asked what everyone's kid was going to be and the answers were like this:

"Elsa from Frozen!"

"Spiderman!"

"A Paw Patrol character!"

"A creepy clown."

The last one was my response. I had eyes swivel towards me in shock. One of the mothers cleared her throat and went, "I couldn't let my daughter be something creepy. Let alone a clown."

I was all, "Why not? It's what she wants to be."

"Sometimes we don't need to give in to kids," she said with a shrug.

"Sometimes we don't need to get Botox so our face is constantly frozen with the same expression. I mean, can you even smile?" I retorted.

I'm kidding. I swallowed that back.

But seriously. I don't give in to my kid. She doesn't get what she wants all the time. But why couldn't she be a clown if that's who she wanted to be?

I mean yes, clowns terrify me.

But they don't terrify my kid. So because something frightens me, am I supposed to tell her not to be it?

Kale scares me, but if Natalie wanted to walk around like kale, I'd let her.

My daughter loves dressing up like a clown. She's not a MEAN clown. I mean yes, the mask looks mean, but she's not going to go out and petrify children. She likes to petrify ME, but not kids. If she sees kids get upset, she's going to start dancing:

I asked Natalie why she wanted to be a clown and she went, "Because it's fun to act scary."

ACT. ACT. ACT.

Being a clown makes my daughter happy.

Yes I might jump a bit when I see her, because, yikes:

But I'm not about to tell her she can't be a clown because it's not the conventional costume for girls.

She's been the cutesy stuff before.

And now she's a clown. She's all, "Some of my friends think it's weird that I'm a creepy clown. But I don't care. Girls can be scary too. Why should boys have all the fun being scary?"

I completely agree.

So why did I let my daughter be a creepy clown for Halloween?

Because girls can be scary too. And because they CAN.

  1. There's nothing wrong with it!! Scary movies are supposed to remind us that fear is in the mind anyway..it's all make believe! I've been watching horror movies since I was 7 or 8 and I love it. It's Halloween for goodness sakes! Time to dress up and have fun. Some people are just ridiculous.

  4. Lol shes a cutie. And I so see where youre coming from. As a parent, sometimes its so hard for me to make sure that I don't transfer my own fears into my kids. Takes a lot of effort for sure.

  5. It's always so fun to mix things up when it comes to selecting Halloween costumes each year. Clowns are scary, but I love that you supported your daughter's choice because it's what makes her happy. Many good wishes to both of you for a fun and fabulous Halloween.

  6. I think you are a very good Mother to choose your battles wisely.

  7. I think it's really cool that she doesn't want to conform to the stereotypical 'girl' costumes for Halloween! With the recent release of the movie "It", im sure creepy clowns will be everywhere this Halloween!

  9. I think it's awesome that she's being a clown. I would never not let my kids be something they wanted to be - especially for something like Halloween.

  10. There is nothing wrong with her wanting to be a creepy clown. After all the whole theme of Halloween is something scary,creepy...she looks great in it too!

  11. People are so uptight. Its one night, let her be a creepy clown if thats what she wants. As long as she isn't scaring the little kids on purpose than I see no problem with it

  12. I totally agree with what you have done here, the kid needs her freedom to express which character she feels comfortable in. I am so happy you decided to let her go with the clown costume. It is important to support them as that I believe brings out the best in the kid.

  13. I just dont get why not?? Its halloween after all not a princess party or a contest the cutest little girl? I would let my daughter wear that and if people get scared I would totally high five her!

  14. It scares me just seeing the pictures so she did what she wanted! Girls can be scary too you are right! I love that you just let her be her! That is be best a parent can do for their kid!

  15. And why not hey, there's nothing wrong with being whatever you want to be at Halloween and I think a creepy clown is awesome.

  16. I don't think there's anything wrong in it as far as the kids are happy and not getting into trouble. Good thing is shez so brave :D

  17. She looks so happy with her costume! I'm definitely not a fan of clowns so I hope my kids don't ever choose to dress as one, but costume choices is not something I want to take control over. Parenting is about choosing battles that matter, and costumes are not worth it.

  18. There's nothing wrong to be whatever on Halloween as long as she's happy. That's one cool clown costume.

  19. First I hate clowns period. But letting your child choose what they want to be for Halloween is part of them making decisions for themselves. Good for you.

  20. Bravo! Halloween is all about acting and having fun. I love that she already has a dancing plan if other children get scared! And yes, I'm a little terrified of clowns now. It's not like when it was Red Skelton or Emmett Kelly (Oh my, I'm dating myself with those names!), clowns are now the things that go "bump in the night" which is exactly why it's fun to be one on Halloween! I hope she has an amazing time!

  21. I think everyone has to make decisions that fit their family best. If it works for you and your daughter, awesome, but it's not for everyone, and that is totally okay as well.

  22. It is what it is. Everyone let's their child choose so mom's of princess for another year need to just get a grip. I remember last year clowas were not allowed in the area because of the news. I don't know what my kids have settled on yet, glad your organized!

  23. The Botox comment..I choked on my coffee. Hysterical! I totally wish you would have said that!

  24. It is okay to be different. I think it's cool that she knows what she want and is not swayed with what the society calls standard.

  25. She is so adorable but I don't want to see it at night. Lol! You are awesome for letting your child do it.

  26. i seriously think that this is a very cool costume and halloween is suppose to be scary anyway so this is perfect! plus she gets to express her self the way she wants so now it is double perfect! www.crayonized.com

  27. I think she looks great! Halloween should be fun!

  28. I think it's important that parents encourage and support kids when they want to express themselves and their identity (in a safe way, of course.) A scary clown is definitely a unique choice!

  29. Cool costume! There's nothing wrong with a good scary costume on Halloween. I'm glad she likes what she picked out!

  30. Girls can be scary too, you are so right! Good for you! I don't think I'd allow my daughter to be a clown, but that's me.

  31. My son wanted to be Ghost Face from Scream one year. He had never seen the movie. But I let him, because it was who wanted to pretend to be.

  33. Bonus points for supporting your daughter to be a creepy clown! I love that she said, "why do the boys get to have all the fun being creepy?" AWESOME!

  35. Society needs to know that girls are just as capable as boys of doing many things. If we are wanting equality for women (and we should be) that includes the right to wear a clown costume.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I totally agree with you, why couldn't girls, especially our cute child, wear scary costumes if that's what she always wants? She loves it and she's different, then why would we reject it anyway? The fact that you let her follow her heart has shown how caring and wonderful a mother you are!!
I would definitely support my beloved ones' wants as long as they do no harm.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Totally agree that girls don't just have to be the cute and pretty stuff. I don't see anything wrong with dressing up as a scary clown if that's what she likes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wouldn't pick it but I believe in allowing kids to express themselves. Once our kids start to grow up they come into their own. They no longer go along with everything we like and that is okay.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What a scary costume! I would also allow my daughter to dress up how she wants to. It is important for kids to make these decisions while they can.

    ReplyDelete
  40. When I was nine I was some sort or horrific skeleton like the one from Scream. So yeah! My parents gave in because you know.. why wouldn't they??

    ReplyDelete
  41. I honestly do NOT understand why people put some much into OTHER peoples kids. Like who is she hurting by dressing up to be a scary clown. If your child is scared of her costume then just walk away. It's not like her wearing that costume has anything to do with them. Go for you for letting her be her!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Indeed, she portrayed well with that being a creepy clown. I loved how she is up to that and that picture wherein she removed the mask looks like she is really having fun wearing it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't care what my kids wear as long as it's appropriate. Appropriate as in, no immodest crap like most older kids do. Yuck. Halloween is for fun, who cares if it's scary.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I personally don't like seeing my girl be in scary stuff. However, isn't that what Halloween is all about? Scary stuff??

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hahaha she still looks adorable!
But hey, IMHO - crying kids already scares me most, no need for their costumes.

  46. I forgot to let you know that I got the idea of why not me wearing a creepy clown costume as well in our upcoming Halloween party.

  47. I love her costumes in the previous years, she is so pretty. The clown costume look so scary.

  48. She looks super happy in her costumes and I love the idea of mean clown and the fact she likes to petrify only you made me laugh a lot.. :P oh and I love the video!!!

  49. Some people are WAY too uptight. I'd rather my daughter go as something creepy than something skimpy... Let's inspire a love of all things creepy and hope they keep it well into their teen years.

  50. wow you are a bold mom. I am scared of your daughters outfit very freaky!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Exactly if your daughter wants to be a clown then why not? I wish you did say "Sometimes we don't need to get Botox so our face is constantly frozen with the same expression. I mean, can you even smile?" that would have been hilarious x

  52. I have no idea what to say .i ams eriously scared of scary clowns.I hate it and your daughter is so sweet .Why do children want things like tgis which make parenting a puzzle.Loved your post.I would probably let her be til she decides NOT!

  53. I just find your daughter adorable in the scary clown outfit. It's all about enjoying what you do and making memories. Lovely that you documented the memories. :)

  54. That so artistic but really scary, I don't think my kids would wear something like that. For them, Halloween is about fairies and superheroes. (Marcelo Pareja)

  55. I believe that we need to experience different things and girls can try anything so it is great that she wanted to do that and that you supported it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. All clowns creep me out so it doesn't matter if they are scary or funny. :) Let her enjoy being a kid and to dress up like a creepy clown if she wants. She's the cutest creepy clown I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Good for you letting her decide what she wants to dress up as. I am so over the cutesy princess garbage that's shoved down our girl's throats every year. If they want to be creepy, let them!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think it is awesome you let her be what she wants to be and she always comes up with such awesome ideas. I am looking forward to seeing what she is going to be this year.

  59. Wow! I think it's really great. This is Halloween supposed to be! Hope he will have so much fun!

  60. I giggled at what you said .. then I read you didn't actually say it. My jaw was admittedly dropped, like "Oh no she did not say that"!? LOL I agree, just because something frightens YOU, doesn't mean it has to frighten our kids, too. My youngest son has been all sorts of creepy stuff, and he LOVES creepy clowns, the creepier the better (he is also really into horror films and has been since he was 8). That costume is AMAZING though, perfect for Halloween!

  61. That is scary clown! I cannot imagine how I would feel seeing her in front of me. Behind a mask is a super beautiful and lovely girl.

  62. I don't mind if my son would choose to be a creepy crown on Halloween too. Whatever makes him happy and whatever he finds fun, I'm okay with it. :)

  64. I remember reading this post last year. I still love it. I don't see why every girl costume has to be pretty!

  65. I think this is great. Kids should be able to dress however they want. I don't mind what my kids want to be either. Scary or not, it's okay with me.

  68. Nothing wrong in letting her dress up in this costume! It is good to let kids make their own choices, as long as it isn't hurting anyone, no big deal!

  69. Love that you let your little angel dress up as something that scares. Good for you for letting her be her. And you're right, why should boys have all the fun. Hope she has a great Halloween.
