What's Up With The Ripped Jeans Trend?

I needed a new pair of jeans so I went to Kohl's. It's a store full of glorious items and I knew I'd find what I'd need.

At least I thought I would.

I walked in and searched for jeans and I found this:

And then this:

I blinked, confused. Where were are the normal non-ruined jeans? I walked further and saw these:

"What's happening?" I said out loud, frightening a customer beside me. She scurried away. I suppose I looked perturbed, because a worker asked if I needed help.

"Yes," I answered, flustered. "Do you have any jeans without the rips?"

She smiled. She was either thinking, "Oh man, I KNOW, this ripped trend is ridiculous!" or, "Oh my God lady, get with times. No one wears non-ripped jeans anymore." But she showed me regular jeans that I couldn't stick my entire arm through. They were just in the back where the other uncool clothes sit.

I admit, I don't get the torn look. Why on earth would I pay money for ruined jeans? Some people might be all, "But it's the style!" and I'll reply, "But why? Who decided jeans that looked like they were in a fight with a jungle cat is the style? And why are people going along with it?"

People can wear what they want. But me? I'll always be in jeans that a toddler can't stick his face through.

Do you wear ripped jeans?

  1. I don't get the torn look either!!! I just want jeans with no holes in them lol.

  2. Ugh, I can't stand buying brand new jeans that are already ripped!I don't like the look in general, and they cost far too much to come damaged!

  3. Distressed is everywhere. There are designer sweatshirts selling for $1000s that are "distressed" aka ripped. Hahaha.

  4. I remember when they were in style back in the late 80's, but my mom had to rip them for me because they didn't sell them like that.

  5. ROFL I don't get it either. Like I can't even wear holes in my jeans on casual Fridays at work (it's against policy) so when the hell would I wear them? Around the house? uhhh no 1. I wear leggings around the house and 2. I'll probably get the edges of furniture caught in the holes as I walk by haha

  6. I'm sure if I had holes in my jeans I'd get them caught on something and tear them even more.

    1. Oh my goodness this would so be me as well, I am forever getting caught on things!

  7. I don’t like the torn jeans. I still love the classic fit and without any tear on it.

  8. I totally get what you mean. I avoid jeans and trousers in a general way but it's a bit annoying that they are all ripped when I want something super simple!

  9. The only ripped jeans I own are the ones I have worn for years and made my own rips in them. Never understood this fad. Why would you pay good money for pair of ripped jeans.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I get it but I own 1 pair of distressed denim, they're ripped at the knee and they look so good on me. I TOTALLY remember when I bought them too. I bought them on sale with a coupon for under $10. My coupon expired that day and I wouldn't dare let a coupon expire so I grabbed the 1st thing in my size near the register. Now if those jeans weren't $10 and I didn't have a coupon, trust me they'd still be on that rack.

  11. My question is...how do you not die trying to put them on? Like how do you not get all your body parts caught up in them and then fall flat on your face and then break limbs and pride and....and....why is this happening? Are you cold?
I'll stick with my "all-together" jeans thanks.

  12. Haha, I totally agree! I wouldn't want half my leg showing through especially in winter!

    ReplyDelete
  13. No kidding! If I pay as much as they are asking for jeans I want all the fabric I should get! Guess I have to resort to "mom jeans"

  14. Funny how ripped jeans cost more than the pants I usually wear. So I guess those brands are getting in a good laugh! I don't get it, and for most of us, I can't imagine that they would actually be functional.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would like them slightly ripped but one I'm 49 and matronly so I'd feel ridiculous and second I always wear my jeans at work so they wouldn't be appropriate plus my boss hates them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Haha I own a pair or two! Not that much ripped as on your pictures though! When did you grew up? In the 80s or was it 90s the ripped jeans were very in and I guess the trends always come back.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hands up I don't get it, and why they cost so much?! Like you can buy a complete pair for more and then you could just mess them up right?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I prefer more of the distressed look. Not to the extreme though. The ripped jeans look is ok. Just not so much for me.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I see ripped jeans everywhere and all I can think is “didn’t we do this in the 80s, 90s already?” I swear there are no new ideas left. I a few years they’ll want us in hoop skirts again

  20. I don't wear ripped jeans either. But that's mostly because I think that my legs would get too cold.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'll admit, I own a pair but there is always that one person who looks at you differently when you wear them . Hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have one pair with just a few distressed places in them (I asked a friend if I was too old for them). But some of these are just too much. And usually the more holes, the more expensive.

    ReplyDelete
  23. haha! i only have one pair of this type of jeans and it may look cool but it is one of those trends that easily go out of style i feel!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I feel like this trend kind of phases in and out every few years. I'm almost certain my kids have had ripped jeans at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have a pair of ripped jeans that I love. They only have a few spots where the fabric is more worn then ripped open. I think they are getting carried away with these huge holes in the jeans now.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have one pair. They are the kind that have the patches sewed underneath so they really don't have holes, just more distressed looking. They make me feel trendy. I wouldn't wear any of the ones in your pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I too am not lovin' the ripped jeans trend. When I go shopping for new jeans next week I really hope I can find some that look decent. Otherwise I'll be counting on the jeans I currently have that look 10 years newer than the ones that look like they were discovered in an alley somewhere, dusted off and placed on a clothing rack.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, why would I spend money on something that wasn't high quality?! And I do consider not ripped a sign of quality in my clothing. :) I also cannot/will not get on the 'skinny' pant/leggings as pants phenomenon. They look good on NO ONE, period. No exceptions.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i'm not sure i can buy a pair of ripped jeans... i've honestly never done that, even when it first came into style a decade ago. now ripped jeans are back in style, and i still haven't given into the trend. i feel like my legs would have cold spots all through the winter haha

  30. I do wear ripped jeans, however I agree it is too difficult to find a non-ripped pair these days! It is just a trend but classics are always good.

  31. Back when I was younger I would have perhaps adopted the trend. Now in my mid-40's I'm not thinking its a look I'm going to embrace.

  32. My tween daughter and I are just starting to debate fashion. We've compromised and she's not allowed to wear anything ripped to school...or really anywhere where I want her to look respectable. In your room, at home, when you're not going anywhere...ok.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've owed a few pairs over the years, but they were only "slightly distressed" not torn everywhere. The only times I wear them when I want to look cute but casual, like running Saturday morning errands. Most of the time I stick with my dark wash skinny jeans though! The fashion trend I really really don't understand is the tshirts with holes in them...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love ripped jeans, but I agree some are a bit overdone. For example, I really don't like any of the ones that you photographed.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes I do But my ripped jeans has little and tiny rips that wouldn't even pass for a hole. hahaha. I also wear normal jeans most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wish these pants were the trend when I was a kid. I would have been pretty fashionable.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Too funny that you had trouble finding intact jeans.. We ripped our own in the 80s - jeans we bought at the Salvation Army for $3.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ripped jeans can be super cute in moderation. If your jeans are barely hanging on by a thread, it's not a great look.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ugh, I refuse to buy pre-ripped jeans. My kids rip them fast enough!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'll admit that I do wear ripped jeans but I am only 21 so I feel like I can get away with it. However, I only wear the ones that you can't see the skin through just where there's the strings going across, I feel like they are more comfortable sometimes and stretch in a different way than some other pants. Most of my jeans are fully intact though so I get where you're coming from, jeans are hard to find as it is now we have to look at those monstrosities like in your pictures too!

  41. I see so many woman and teens in ripped jeans. I personally do not like the look and would never wear them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is really one of those trends that I will never understand. I thought it was ridiculous a few years ago and think the same now.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have to admit that I used to wear jeans like this when I was younger. Now that I am older I cringe even thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I personally like ripped jeans and they can be a great fashion piece. Its best to wear i moderation. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have to agree with you about the jeans with the holes. Why would people pay for a pair of jeans that are ripped. This is something I will never understand for sure. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who finds this trend crazy. I like my jeans non ripped. I didn’t even get it when I was younger. If I didn’t put a hole in it myself I wasn’t going to pay for it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I used to wear them but I don't even like jeans anymore. They make me feel itchy! I would have your reaction!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I never got on board with this trend. Most likely because, well, I don't wear or even own, ANY jeans! lol!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't understand the trend of ripped jeans either. And to think the amount people pay for these. Will never wear them.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The third pic is heights I have seen popping dancers wearing it.

  51. They are very fashionable but when they are overly broken I don't like them, but I've never liked them since I was a teenager!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't mind ripped jeans just depends how ripped. I am not for the ones. That your whole thigh is out saying hello to everyone but minimal is OK

    ReplyDelete
  53. No this will never happen. Not spending money on new jeans that have been torn and ripped. Beside it looks sloppy and like you don't care what you look like.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I admit I had a pair about 10 years ago. I was going through a mid-life crisis I guess. LOL I don't like them either. I saw a pair of beat up sneakers on a morning show a few days ago - looks like they were from the 70's - selling for around 1K. Why? I knew I should have saved all my 70's stuff! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yeah, I don't really understand this trend. I feel like I would end up tearing an even bigger hole in the jeans!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yeah I've never understood this trend either but it seems to be the popular one. I have one pair because they fit good and that is it. I wish that they did not have holes in them.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Finally someone who hates ripped jeans too! I'm in my 20s and yet I hate those. Such a stupid trend.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lol glad I am not the only one. I own a pair but that was because it was gifted to me by a friend so we go twinning.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Fashion is not always smart. I have a few pairs of ripped jeans and my daughters are resdy to fall of they are so ripped.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Honestly I dont get it too but if they feel more comfortable with it? I'll give it to them

    ReplyDelete
  61. Slightly distressed jeans are nice. When done properly.. The ones you pictured above are definately not cool and I will just leave it at that. Don't want to say anything too mean.
But jeans should definitely be fitted to your body and fit properly.. I love jeans and I own expensive and affordable jeans and they all fit like a glove and are not uncomfortable. Some are distressed most are not but to each their own.

  62. I never have understood the concept behind paying for torn jeans. I agree with Andie that slightly distressed jeans are cute but nothing more than that.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I do love Kohls but NO, I do NOT do the ripped jeans. They seem to put the rips in the most inmodest places! I try to dress modestly while still staying in style. It is getting harder and harder to do.

    ReplyDelete
  64. My parents would totally give me a hard time if they ever saw me and ripped jeans. Some of them aren't that bad, but that third pair in your post is crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I would think the rips would get bigger after being washed unless there is a trick to it. Hopefully they start having more options for jeans, mostly without the rips.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I didn't get it until I tried a pair on, and they are so cute and comfy. I would have NEVER guessed.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yeah.. no thanks! I can't even get over how much ripped jeans cost, too. It is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ha-ha! You remind me of how ripped jeans were such a trend last year and I sort of liked the ripped-knee jeans only. I don't love them super ripped that you have to wear tights underneath.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm fine with a few holes or rips here and there, but too much is ridiculous. I don't like it with those big holes. LOL. -Lynndee

    ReplyDelete
  70. I wear some ripped jeans but not these types. I think sometimes they are getting overboard. lol!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ripped jeans are sooo popular nowadays. I have a few pairs and I wear them occasionally. My mom, though, doesn't approve lol!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I do not like the ripped jeans. it is not my choice of clothing. i prefer the one with no holes.

    ReplyDelete
  73. That was very popular when I was in school. To be honest, I still kinda like it!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Haha, I love reading about this. Ripped pants are now trending but I do not have yet. I am using my old pants which is not ripped. That is my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Have you seen the pre-worn dirty, filled with holes look of denim. I don't get those ones at all? Why do I need to look dirty when I am leaving the house. And yet some people love those.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Haha I missed reading your posts you are funny. I actually love ripped jeans I think they are great but admittedly they are not for everyone as you say!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Never in my life wear a ripped jeans. It just these many brands are glamourising this annoying piece of clothing.

    ReplyDelete
  78. These have been popular for a few years now and I just don't get it! I buy my jeans to last because I buy clothes for myself so little so I don't get spending that much money on something that comes preripped and won't last that long because of it *shrug*

    ReplyDelete
  79. I don't understand the trend of ripped jeans either. Slightly distressed jeans are nice. When done properly.
