You know, for the longest time, my kids didn't live by their grandparents. My husband is in the military, so we always lived pretty far from them.
It could be tough. Oh sure there were visits, but we always hoped that one day we'd live closer.
We were lucky and my husband got stationed in Texas, about 45 minutes from my parents, which meant my kids could see more of them! Plus we make visits to see my husband's mom, or sometimes she's able to see us.
There are many ways why grandparents are cool.
1. They can watch the kids! This is always an amazing thing, because we prefer not to use babysitters. I'm sure they're sane, but you never know.
2. They can travel with you for extra help. My Mom came with us to Disney World, and we all had a fabulous time.
3. They can take the kids to cool places! My Mom took us to see Wicked and The Sound Of Music, plus many other fun areas.
4. They can craft with the kids! I'm not the best crafter, I won't lie. But my husband's Mom is amazing at crafts:
5. They can make dresses out of sheets with the kids. My husband's Mom is amazing at doing this! She is so creative:
6. They can cook with the kids! I'm not a fan of cooking with my children because I hate being in the kitchen to begin with. Add extra steps and I'm downright cranky. But my husband's Mom loves to cook and bake with her grandkids:
7. They can protect my kids! Seriously, this snake was found at my parents' house, and my Dad was all, "Don't touch it!" I imagine it wasn't poisonous, but they didn't want to have to tell me, "oops, sorry, your daughter was bitten by a snake."
8. They can take care of plants when you have no idea what you're doing with them. I STINK with plants. I kill plants. But my mother is amazing with them.
9. They can start a Young Savers Plan from Shepherds Friendly. Grandparents can put money back each month to help their grandchildren in the future. I know when I'm a grandparent, I hope to help my grandchildren out with college as my own grandparents did for me.

How are your grandparents cool? If you're a grandparent, what do you enjoy doing with your grandkids?
I am lucky that my Dad is retired so he is able to visit and it's nice that E has such a great relationship with him.
ReplyDeleteOmg that dress out of the sheet is so darn cute!
ReplyDeleteYou and your mom look so much alike!! It's so awesome they get to be with the kids. I miss my grandparents...they are all gone now. :(
Grandparents are the best. I can't count the number of times my parents have saved us when things have gotten crazy! I'm sad that we just moved away from them.
ReplyDeleteGrandparents are so amazing! I'm totally with you about the crafting...my mom is teaching my girls to sew, which is something I don't have the patiences for. I also love the stories they tell my kids, it's always a living history lesson.
ReplyDeleteMy grandma was one of my best friends! I count myself very lucky to have had her in my life as long as I did! I'm so happy that your kids get to se your parents more now!
ReplyDeleteWe've always spent a lot of time with my parents, but since we lost my mom in February we have been including my dad even more in our lives.
ReplyDeleteI think grandparents are way cool. After all, I am one! Hanging out with the grandkids is something I look forward to each week and I'm glad I only live 10 minutes away. I love the dress made from sheets. It's awesome.
ReplyDeleteI had a really great set of grandmothers. I was blessed. My dads mom was wonderful. My moms mom was super awesome. My girls haven't had the same. My husbands mother loves his sisters kids more. My oldest is 18, she's watched her 5 times. One of those times I was in the hospital giving birth to her baby sister! She's only watched my youngest 4 times. She doesn't do anything above and beyond for our kids. My husbands dad lives 15 hours away, and would love to see them more. He would totally be cool if we lived closer. My parents, my mom passed away, but before she did, my parents would keep the girls when they were here, or when we went to their house (5 hours away). They also kept my oldest over the summers for a few weeks at a time. They were great. My dad is still pretty great, but at 5 hours away, he can't be there for him like he would love too. Consider yourselves lucky!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents are gone and I miss them. My parents are gone and they were wonderful grandparents. Now that I'm a grandmother we love spending time with our grandchildren they keep us young.

ReplyDeleteI am a military brat and always lived pretty far from my grandparents. One side is deceased and I don't have a great relationship with the other set due to obvious preference for my cousins that live close. Unfortunately we don't live close to my kids' grandparents either.
ReplyDeleteMy grandma is awesome. I STILL enjoy cooking with her whenever I visit. Funny thing so do my kids and even the great, great grandkids are getting in on the fun. My grandma rocks!
ReplyDeleteOt's a blessing to have grnadparents around and to be able to spend time with them. I am lucky enough to be able to still spend time with my grandparents. My son loves spending time with them too. He loves having his grandparents around

ReplyDeleteGrandparents are indeed cool and fortunate are the kids who get to spend time with them. With their experience and wisdom grand parents can be powerful centres of love and guidance to the kids.

ReplyDeleteMy grandparents on both sides of the family are very much different when it comes to lifestyle, tradition and culture. Although I have not spent most of the time with them aside from my Nanay, I do have fond memories with them. I can say some are cool in possible way they can be.
ReplyDeleteGrand parents are the best. I am looking forward to being a Grandma eventually. I have a few friends that have grandchildren and they say it is the best.
ReplyDeleteThese are great points! It's awesome when the kids are excited to visit or be visited by their grandparents.
ReplyDeleteI wish my MOm is here with me so she can bond with my kids. That's the one part my kids don't have anymore here in the US.
ReplyDeleteGrandparents are awesome and growing up with them really made my childhood exciting. From learning different things to bonding with them with everything.
ReplyDeleteI never had cool grandparents, but had a great aunt who would let me cook and make a mess. That was heaven to me.
ReplyDeleteGrandparents are like the fun side of parents. ;) That's why having grand kids is the best part about having kids.
ReplyDeleteWow!! That pretty much sums up why we all love our grandparents so much. They can do literally anything to keep us happy. I love the dress that granny spun for her granddaughter. Really cool!! Cheers!!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! I couldn't agree more. Grannies are parents lifesavers, they are their best person to lean on especially when taking care of the kids.
ReplyDeleteIt is always awesome to have your parents around when you have kids. It is so important I believe for kids to know their grandparents. I grow-up with my grandparents watching us every day after school because both my parents worked and there was 5 of us kids. Thanks for sharing the information and your awesome story.
ReplyDeleteGrandparents are the best! Love this post!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute. Grandparents are seriously the best.
ReplyDeleteThis is really nice! I miss my grandparents though.
ReplyDeleteGrandparents are extended parents. They have knowledge and wisdom even the parents dont have...let your grandparents give holistic/old wives tips for healing too.
ReplyDeleteOhh, don't I know it!? My kids have six of them! Two are far away and the other four are close but one of the sets just bought a house in Florida.. More far away!
