The San Antonio Rodeo and Carnival

It was cold when we went to the San Antonio rodeo. Granted, people on the east coast would point and laugh at our version of cold--the high was 48--but still. When you live in Texas, you expect it to be over 60 at all times and when it isn't, panic sets in.

Even though it was cold, my daughter still wanted to go on the rides. There was drizzle and wind going on, making it seem even colder than 48, but she was ready to go.

(The clown trash cans are terrifying.)

The carnival is set up beside the rodeo. There are a good number of rides set up, plus an area for smaller kids. Also, you have your typical carnival food. (Fried Twinkies! Funnel cakes!)

When it's cold out, the plus is there are NO LINES! Natalie was sometimes the only rider on.

You can also go see animals, but we didn't have a lot of time. After the rides we decided to eat and get to our seats since the rodeo would start soon. There's also tons of shopping, but I had just been to Target and had very little spending money left. Plus, I'm just not really a cowboy boot kinda gal and cowboy hats look odd on me. (There's other things for sale. But those are obviously popular items.)

The rodeo is your typical rodeo with bucking horses, lassoing, and mutton busting. It's held in the AT&T Center where concerts are also held. Also, some team called the Spurs play there.

I liked the barrel racing, because the women do that:

It lasted about two hours. There are people going up and down aisles with drinks, popcorn, and cotton candy if you get hungry.

After the rodeo, the show that comes afterwards sets up. When we went, Jeff Dunham was performing. Natalie has always liked her puppets so it was perfect for her.

Yes, his humor can be a bit crass, but we're a crass family, so it worked out.

We had a lot of fun. It's always a good day for me when I get a funnel cake:

So have you been to the rodeo?

  2. No, I've never experienced such fun. The cold weather was an advantage for your daughter after all - as she chose the best rides in the carnival minus the queue!

  3. The San Antonio rodeo looks like it was such a blast. Although I've been to many carnivals before, I've never been to a legit rodeo!

  7. I have never been to a rodeo before, but have seen a venue where one is held. This one reminds me a bit of our county fair except for the actual rodeo part. I could go for some of that funnel cake with my coffee right now.

  11. I have been told that when I was little (3 or 4) that we would go to the local rodeo a couple of times a year. Obviously I don't remember. It sounds like it was a lot of fun though, and the fact there were no lines at the carnival would have made my daughter happy!

  18. Oh my gosh! I love Jeff Dunham! We've actually seen a performance of his and he's pretty awesome. As for the weather in Texas, I'm in Northern Colorado and I don't like going out when it's below 60...I bundle up way more than others, but really who likes to hang out outside when it's 48? Not anyone I know, unless they are a snowboarder or skiier.
