What's Up With Her Teeth?

I share a lot of photos of my daughter.

She's more willing than my son. Kind of. She is getting older so she does get moody at times. But for the most part, she'll pose.

Some people have noticed she doesn't have all her teeth. I mean she's 10, so that's a bit odd. Most kids her age have most of their permanent teeth. When she turned 10, she was still missing her two front teeth:

Natalie is still missing several of her teeth, including one of her front teeth. She'll eventually get them, but hers take longer to come in. I'm not sure if there's a specific word for it, but her brother was the same way. Here he is about the same age. As you see, he has one permanent front tooth, and the other is slowly coming in. This is the same way Natalie's teeth are. (Their Father's teeth actually came in late too! So it's genetics!)

The dentist is a little concerned, but not totally, since her brother eventually got all of his teeth. (And he has braces now! Natalie will need them too.)

Most people are polite about it when they ask. On Instagram I'll get the occasional comment of, "What happened to her teeth?" and I get it, I'd be curious too. She's ten. She should have most of her permanent teeth.

But there have been some who are like, "Yikes! What happened to her teeth?" or, "I hope you fix that smile!"

Most of those comments come from people whose first language isn't English judging from their profiles. So maybe they didn't mean it coming out so rude. But still. It's rude. And I'll tell them so. Most don't bother to apologize.

Luckily my daughter doesn't have an Instagram, and I don't show her all the comments when I share a photo because quite frankly, sometimes people are jerks. If she saw these comments, maybe she wouldn't smile so large. She might become self-conscious. But right now, she'll still flash a wide grin, because I always tell her she's beautiful.

So yes. My daughter WILL get all her teeth, I promise. Most of the kids in her school know this. There have been some who haven't been kind, but I tell Natalie to ignore them, and she does.

Plus, with the popularity of Stranger Things and the fact that Dustin, a character in the show doesn't have all HIS teeth when he's in middle school, Natalie doesn't think it's so bad. (The actor, Gaten Matarazzo has something called cleidocranial dysplasia.)

All I ask is if you see a kid who looks different, to be polite about it when you ask what's up. Otherwise my Mama Bear claws will come out, and I can't promise I'll be friendly.

Just don't be a jerk online. Especially to children.

  1. well i am afraid to comment as english isn't my 1st language either.
Anyway, your daughter is adorable and its not really uncommon for kids around that age to not have a full set of teeth. My little niece is the same, her front tooth isn't showing yet and she's 10 years old too.

  2. Your daughter is beautiful - teeth or no teeth! Keep her young, as she's going to capture the eye of many a boy when she is older.

  3. I do get why people ask, but ask - don't be rude about it. Geez, she is just a kid. I don't get why people have to be so judgy and rude sometimes.

  4. Sometimes people ask strange questions or they are just too nosy. This is why I tend not to post many personal photos of my kids or myself on social media.

  5. Your daughter is very pretty. As long as you, her and the dentist are watching her teeth what is the big deal. People don't stop and think sometimes. Really none of their business.

  6. I feel like I didn't even notice. I obviously know she's 10 but it didn't cross my mind that she should have her teeth by now! Great post about being kind to others.

  7. When my son was almost 13 we had to have 7 of his baby teeth removed, he inherited the nick name Chip because he looked like a chipmunk afterwards. Love her smile!!

  8. Your daughter is beautiful! I wouldn't worry too much. Teeth will come in when they are ready.

  9. Wow those are some rude comments. She is absolutely beautiful. My Brother's teeth came late as well as I remember how he used to get teased about it. It's a horrible thing for a child to have to go through. I'm sorry she has dealt with that.

  10. People can be so rude. Some questions you just don't ask. Her smile is gorgeous

  11. Ugh.. I am sorry this is even an issue, but unfortunately, people don't surprise me anymore. Funny, the first thing I thought of was Dustin! I liked that they worked that into his role on Stranger Things. Here's hoping people think before opening their mouths from here on out.

  12. She's absolutely gorgeous!
People shouldn't really pass comment on situations they don't know about at all

  13. I think her smile is beautiful! It is interesting how their teeth have come in later like their Dad. Each of my three kids have been very different in the times they lost their teeth.

  14. She is beautiful and her smile lights up! Her teeth will come in at some point. It's part of childhood to have teeth falling out and growing back super slow!

  15. My 8 year old has all his front teeth, but not any new molars...I guess that's normal. At anyrate, I've always thought toothless grins from kids were cute! Your daughter is beautiful and I definitely wouldn't share other people's thoughts with her. She's too young for a complex, and she has a beautiful smile and a sparkle in her eye and that's all that matters.

  16. She’s beautiful! I didn’t even noticed her missing teeth. I was captivated by her cute smile! ☺️

  17. she is as beautiful as can be! Sometimes it's difficult because other children do not even realize they are being impolite. I was like her when I was younger and I lost my teeth way later than other children. It was definitely a growing experience.

  18. "Don't be a jerk online" Amen sister! I'd add don't be jerk anywhere but that might be asking too much.

  19. Tell Natalie she is beautiful! And I love the cute poses. :)

  20. My son also had late bloomers when it came to his teeth, he also now has braces. Both your children are beautiful. Those making snide remarks just have nothing better to do that troll. Pay them no mind because obviously they do not know what they are talking about!

  21. My son had his two front teeth pulled after they were damaged and chipped and got cavities. We had them pulled instead of capped because his adult teeth were supposed to come in soon... nope. He was without front teeth forever.

  22. I had no idea it was an issue. It's just a kid losing her milk teeth waiting for her permanent teeth to come in. Unless you're from a different planet, you shouldn't even be concerned about it or comment on it as if it's unusual. I think that's just normal.

  23. Yes! This! I wish people would a) mind their own business and b) not ask questions or make statements that would make any person feel bad about themselves.

  24. Like what others are saying, people have to start minding their own business. Some comments are just not necessary and it's more hurtful than anything else! I have a friend who was the same way growing up with their permanent teeth!

  25. I never noticed! Scarlet didn't get any teeth until she was one. And she's eight and has only lost two teeth. I don't know if that's the same thing you're describing because the two teeth she lost grew in as adult teeth fast, but she has weird teeth. Two are fused together as baby teeth but have separate roots and the dentist said he's heard of it but never seen it! Spooky!

  26. She is gorgeous and I love her smile! I have heard of this I think. Can't remember the name for it but you know what it does not matter! She is going to get them when it's her time to. I think she is a very pretty young lady with a great smile!

  27. Talk about rude. I guess they forgot that kids all develop differently and some go through milestones earlier while some are late. I think you don't have to explain to people like that. They don't deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I never really thought of this. Having representations of many things on TV so that things are more normalised. Stranger things definitely came at a good time for your daughter!

    ReplyDelete
  29. This reminds me of Dustin on Stranger Things. See I am so happy his character was created so they can show that this is a thing some kids go through but she will get them!

  30. I had a friend in school who took 4 years for his 2 front teeth to come in. I think he had a condition though.

  31. My son didn’t have any teeth for awhile until they finally came in. People can be so mean at times.

  32. I wouldn't say a word to her either. Kids can get self conscious from just one thing. Her smile is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. She positively glows!

  33. To be honest when I scrolled down the pics I noticed that her smile genuine and i see beauty in that. I did not even noticed she had missing teeth until I read your content. I can see she knows how to project :)

  34. It is not the first time I see a picture of your (adorable) daughter and to be honest, if you hadn't mentioned her teeth, i would have never noticed!

  35. I think it is great that you have been so proactive in taking care of their oral hygiene and health. They look like great kids and their dentist will take care of the rest.

  36. Your children are beautiful! That happen to me when I was younger, so I know the feeling, but the grew in just fine. Just taking a little more time.

  37. Yeah, I understand what you are saying. I had a couple of people tell me on instagram that my daughter looked like a chipmunk. That was disheartening. Even if my daughter never saw it, it upset me to think people could be that way. Sorry that you had people saying insensitive things to yours. That does stink.

  38. I think according to her, It all depends on whether you brush, floss teeth and gargle properly after eating chocolates. In fact I would advise parents to give chocolates to their kids once in a week and preferably make them eat it at night rather than during the day because we do brush our teeth at night.

They are all so adorable and I really love their smiles. Taking care of our teeth is so important and we need to teach our kids to brush their teeth properly.

  40. What's odd here is people actually commenting such things for a 10 year old. She has a beautiful smile, teeth or no teeth. You just tell her every day that she's a beautiful girl!

  41. I somehow missed this post. Hailey is missing a tooth also. Her adult canine tooth. It’s actually missing, as in never formed. In the future she’ll need a fake tooth or something which pains me to even think about her having to go through that surgery. For now, the empty spot isn’t bothering her so I’ll leave it be.

    1. Natalie has a tooth like that on the bottom. She'll also need a fake tooth. Her top tooth is eventually going to come in, it'll just take a bit. But her brother's front teeth were the same way!

  42. This happens sometimes. Some children got their teeth late and some got early. Definetly your daughter will have all her teeth. It will take time but it will come. My brother had also same problem but he got his teeth finally!! You can do dental checkup for healthy teeth. Thanks for sharing!
