Girls Can Wear Scary Costumes Too

It's officially Fall!

Do you have Halloween costumes picked out?

My daughter does.

Yup, she went for the scary one again.

Remember last year?

And yup, once again there have been some comments on how she should dress as something nice. I got them last year too.

First of all, no, girls don't always have to dress as something nice. It's not 1954.

Second of all, she's not your kid, so why do you care? Force your daughters to stay as princesses or unicorns, but I won't be doing the same with mine.

I think it's fabulous how much fun she has in her costume. Of course she doesn't have murderous thoughts like the character, but some people think if their kid so much as LOOKS at a deranged fictional person, that they'll turn into one. For real.

No. No, it's not like that at all.

Let your child have fun! If they want to be something nice on their own, great. But if they request Hannibal Lecter, go for it!

And don't worry, if a little kid freaks out over Natalie, she plans on lifting up her mask and reminding them that it's okay.

I don't know what she'll be next year. Or maybe she won't be anything at all. She is getting older, so she might decide to quit dressing up. But then again, she loves candy, and she loves dressing up, so I can't see her stopping.

But if she wants to be something scary again?

I'll be all for it.

  1. I think it's so awesome she wants to wear a scary costume. When I was younger I used to bounce back and forth between scary and girly every other year.

  2. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE her costume!!! Just terrifying! My son unabashedly went wearing a brown girl's dress with a crinoline under it, and a lampshade with a pull-string on it on his head and a headlamp facing up to make it look like he was a lamp with the light on last year!

  3. I'm terrified of clowns or anything scary, but I 100% think girls should wear any costume they want! There definitely needs to be more gender equality when it comes to costumes too. Last year my daughter wanted to be a scientist and it was hard to find a female scientist costume, or any scientist costume really. I think girls should go after anything they put their minds to!

  4. It's just for fun. I don't think it matters much on an occasion like Halloween. Girls should be able to choose and enjoy it as much as boys.

  5. Girls can do anything they want and I love that she is into all the kind of stuff. It's nice that we live in a day in age when girls can do anything!

  6. The thought would never cross my mind that girls couldn't wear scary costumes. Let them dress scary if they want to. You're right, it's no one's business.

  7. Well of course girls can wear scary costumes. Didn’t know there was ever such a thing. Your daughter looks vest her scary costumes

  8. Growing up I would venture off to scary costumes at a time, I love that my parents didn't put any boundaries when it came to selecting a costume. Not sure why costumes have to be so gender specific.

  9. Your Natalie is quite a model. I'm still wondering what my kids would be wearing for this year.

  10. I think Halloween is a great way for kids to express themselves and be whatever they want. Scary has no gender go for it.

  11. Girls can do everything. And your daufhdauis slaying it. I personally love to wear scary costumes.

  12. Her costume is absolutely amazing! and she must be such a great fun to hang out with! Girls can do anything or whatever they want!

  13. Wow her costumes are intense! Good for her for wearing what she wants, girls can be scary too :)

  14. I love the costume. And of course, you're 100% right to encourage your daughter if she likes dressing up like this on Halloween.

  15. There will always be "those" people with narrow minds and gender specific ideas. You are right on track with letting your daughter dress up as whatever she likes. Dressing up is supposed to be fun for HER... not anyone else!

  16. These costumes are amazing!!!!!

  17. Love this costume, and love this post! It is so important for young children today to be able to express what they want to, whether it be on halloween or any other time. Gender stereotypes really don't help anyone!

  18. And I can't believe how you've received comments that she should wear something nice. Isn't Halloween mostly about scary costumes?? lol. Anyway, such a cool kid for choosing the scary outfit! :D

  19. Girls definitely do not have to wear only princess costumes! Halloween is about dressing up as anything.

  20. I love it when children feel the freedom to express themselves and dress up as any character they'd like on Halloween. I love the costume your little girl picked!

  21. Those costumes are terrifying and I LOVE IT! (Well, I wouldn't want to run into her on Halloween night, but... :-)
Seriously, so great that she gets to choose to live her truth!

  22. My 13 yo has not worn any of those princess or department store costumes on Halloween. She is pretty creative about them

  23. Ohhh! If I didn’t know that Natalie would be wearing this costume, I won’t notice her as it doesn’t looks like a girl is in this particular costume.

  24. She looks so scary! I wouldn't really think a girl would wear this kind of costume if I hadn't seen her face. This costume rocks! It looks so legit. I might try to have like this if I have a chance.

  25. I love the mirror shot! I love scary costumes. I remember doing scary ones when I was 9 and 10 and scaring little kids, and then feeling badly!

  26. She nailed it the mirror shot is my favorite. Your daughter is so ready for the Halloween I bet she is excited too.

  27. We have left the princess stage. Last year my daughter wanted to be a zombie. This year we are all going as the ghostbusters.

  28. She’s gonna look so scary this Halloween. What a great choice in costume. Hope she has a safe one

  29. Wow, good for her! She's brave. My daughter would freak out if she wears or sees this one...lol

  30. That costume is so well done! That thing has always creeped me out.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My girls always want to dress a little more on the scary side, but I tend to steer them in another direction because I'm a chicken.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My girls don't wear Halloween costumes as it is not a norm for us but I think girls can wear any costume they want whether scary or pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Girls can definitely wear scary costumes! When my daughter was about 13, she was getting ready to go to a Halloween party and I saw she was dressed as a fairy. I was surprised, but she looked cute. She went into her room to finish getting ready and about 30 minutes later came out as a "dead fairy" complete with crazy make up and stage blood. It was pretty funny.

  34. Haha these are pretty scary. We enjoy celebrating seasonal traditions but I encourage my kids to keep it light. Halloween is a great time to be creative!

  35. Perfect look for Halloween and she is looking supper cute (at least for me). I love the way she is posing for pictures.

  36. Some people have to criticize everything. She's not their daughter, just like you say. In the end, she's going to be most happy doing what she loves. In general from reading your blog, you seem to be the kind of parent that gives their children creative freedom in things like this. That is so important and will have such a positive impact on your kids.

  37. I love this so much! People have this mindset that girls should specifically wear cute and pretty costumes during Halloween and honestly, that's no fun at all!

    ReplyDelete
  38. wow! that is really scary ! but she is pretty underneath all that :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Your daughter LOOKS awsome... Whatever your girl wants to be.. let them be it... Your Natalie is the best girl dresser ever... And I like how she plans on showing people its ok....
Do you think she could come up with my costume. Size 8.

  40. Girls can absolutely be whomever they want on Halloween (and everyday)! One year my niece wanted to be a pirate and we were all for it. She rocked it too :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love the costume and of course girls can dress scary. I am so sad because my kids are tooold to trick or treat this year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is great! I've always hated that people force their girls to wear princesses if they don't want to or their boys to wear action stuff if they don't want to. Just let them wear what they want.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Girls can absolutely be whatever they want to be! I remember in the 70's my mom made me a costume out of a black dress, complete with a gray wig, gray makeup, and blood coming down the side of my mouth. The neighbors were upset. It's the one Halloween that I remember because I had fun dressing up the way I wanted to dress up!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anyone can rock a scary costume be it you are a girl or not. It all depends on your creativity and imagination.

    ReplyDelete
  45. oh wow, the costume is super super scary! Halloween is awesome, love it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. That's a really awsesome costume! I actually did that make up a couple years ago on myself and boy it didn't look so great, but it was spooky and FUN!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ha ha. I love this. Sometimes we kill the creativity that our girls want to have and force down our thoughts on how to dress and what costume they should wear on them. I’m sure she will have fun wearing it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wow she is brave! My daughter would have nightmares if she saw these in the store.

    ReplyDelete
  49. So creative. My 9 year old daughter went scary this year for one Halloween party we already had in September. Not sure what she has in mind for the big night, but she seems to like scary too. Good on them is what I say :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love how brave your little girl is! I doubt my son will ever wear this costume though! lol

    ReplyDelete
  51. Good for her! It looks like she has fun and she is being true to who she is. No better lesson than that, momma!

    ReplyDelete
  52. These costumes are really scary. I'm amazed that she really enjoyed wearing those. Happy Halloween!

    ReplyDelete
  53. That's a really scary costumes. I like wearing costumes everytime I can.

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's great that she is doing what she wants, and you are so accepting! Kudos! Free spirited kiddos are so amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My daughter saw her costume and she like it and I like it too and I do believe that each one of us have the right to do the things that we wanted to do.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't love Halloween but I love these scary costumes x

    ReplyDelete
  57. Scary is not gender exclusive! I love the idea of girls wearing scary outfits

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love the costume she chose. I think anyone should be able to wearing whatever costume they want. My kids don't usually wear to scary of stuff, but I'm sure as they get older they're going to want to as well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My daughter loves to dress scary too!

    ReplyDelete
  60. That's a great costume. Definitely nailed the size, look and even the bicycle. So cute and scary! Girls can wear whatever costumes they want for Halloween. It's an celebration and anyone can celebrate the fun!
