I Love Musicals, But My Husband Hates Them

Oh man, so when my husband and I started dating in high school, I asked if he liked musicals and he was like, "Not even a little bit."

I thought, okay, I can change him and MAKE him love musicals. So I would play music from Phantom of the Opera or The Sound of Music when he was around, and he'd be like, "Is there a wounded animal around here?" and I'd say, "NO, that's Maria singing Do-Re-Mi."

He sort of liked the music from Phantom, until someone started to sing, and then he'd be all, "They ruined it."

Then I'd start to say lines from the play, because surely he could relate somehow.

"The world showed no compassion to me!"

But he'd say, "That dude needs to stop whining."

So yeah, he's not into musicals. It freaks him out when people break out into song and it especially freaks him out when boys start dancing in tights. He's the typical military man, which is nice, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I wish he'd do a random pirouette while singing Shipoopi. Is that too much to ask?

Here's the funny part though: his daughter also loves musicals. She got a part in Mary Poppins Jr and wanted Tom to see it.

Of course he can't deny his little girl, so he said he'd go.

And we did!

Let me tell you, it was amusing to watch Tom's expressions while he watched.

They ranged from surprised:

To downright frightened:

Especially when some people from the play came down and sang right in front of us. I could hear Tom mutter, "Holy crap."

However. Natalie did awesome. That's her in the purple skirt.

And when she came on stage, Tom smiled a bit.

When the play was over, Tom said thoughtfully, "That was odd."

But when Natalie came out, he gushed how great she was. And she was. I love musicals, and I thought everyone did an amazing job. The teachers who put this together are heroes.

Also, the boy Natalie likes and who likes her back came to see her, and she practically fell over. Well, really, I think he also came to see a friend who was in the play as well, but Natalie didn't care, she was like, "Do you want to see who *insert boy name here* is?" and I went, "Sure, you can introduce me," and she nearly fell over from shock.

"I CAN'T DO THAT!" she hissed, and I scowled and went, "Why not?" and she went, "Okay, he's there in the black sweatshirt," and when I turned to look she went, "DON'T STARE AT HIM!" and I was like:

"HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE THEN IF I CAN'T LOOK?"

Natalie told me to casually turn my face like she said something funny, and I did that, and saw a boy across the way with dark hair. He was sort of peeking in our direction too, but quickly looked away.

"What's going on?" Tom asked. He had been observing all of this with confusion.

"Oh, the boy Natalie likes and who likes her back is here," I explained and Tom went, "I'll meet him," and Natalie went, "NO, YOU CAN'T!" because holy crap, Tom can be intimidating.

Tom went, "Okay then, can we leave?" because there was a lot of people around and he doesn't do well with crowds.

"I can't yet, I have to change," Natalie whispered. She was still flicking glances at the boy. Flick, flick, flick. It was like she was having a mini seizure.

"Could you go change then?" Tom asked, getting slightly impatient.

"Tom, the boy she likes is here, she's got to stare a bit. It's how it goes," I said.

Tom frowned.

"Do you want to go tell him hi?" I suggested after Natalie tossed her hair back which gave her another opportunity to gape at him.

It was like I had just let out a giant audible fart. Natalie gave me a horrified look. "I can't do that!"

I mean, what do I know? Communication isn't the same in Middle School I guess.

Eventually she went back and changed and tossed the boy once last look as she left. I saw him sort of peek over too.

Natalie absolutely loved doing the play and will be trying out again next year. She said being with everyone was like another family. Plus, she said she likes being around other people who like to randomly burst out into song and who appreciate dressing up.

(This is Natalie dressed as Alexander Hamilton. She hasn't seen that musical yet, but she loves the songs.)

Do you like musicals?

  4. Musicals are definitely not for everyone. I like some of them, but there are some that I don't, like the adaptation of Les Miserables. I found that one to be very boring, even if I love the book and the movie.

  10. I don't think guys not liking musicals is a rarity. I'm sure if you polled 100 men, over half would say, "no way!". I give him credit for going with you. Your recollections of his expressions are hilarious! Also, your exchange with Nat over the boy is so funny, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only parent to ever be told by their tween not to stare!
