When You Have A Kid Who Procrastinates

So my daughter had a project due for science. She didn't let me know until a week after she got the assignment. Suddenly she was like, "Oh, I have a project due," and I panicked and thought she meant it was due the next day. She's done that before.

Luckily she added, "I have another week to get it done."

Oh. Phew.

Basically they had to talk about Earth's Layers, something I vaguely remember doing in grade school.

"So when do you plan on starting?" I asked her and she shrugged.

"You know," is all she replied.

You know? YOU KNOW? What does that mean? I was about to ask more questions but she's in middle school now. It's on her to complete her work.

I went out and got her a poster board. And that poster board sat in the room for days. The cats were more interested.

I did say, "Hey, isn't your project due in like four days?" and Natalie went, "Yeah, I have four days though, so..." and then she went back to watching videos.

Gosh, being a parent is FUN, it really is.

Eventually, she did start it. Slowly.

After the letters were put on, she was like, "Well, that's it for today!" and I asked if she wanted to finish and she went, "But I still have more time."

Okay. Right.

And honestly, I am a bit of a procrastinator too. So I couldn't be a hypocrite. Still. The cats kept paying more attention to her work.

But I found when I didn't nag, she did work more on the project. I mean, she got distracted easily, but she did finish.

AN ENTIRE DAY BEFORE IT WAS DUE!

I was thrilled. And yes, she did it on her own. You can tell when parents do the project. They think you can't, but come on.

"Don't lose your project on the bus," I warned Natalie. She has lost many things on the bus.

Anyway, on the day the project was due, the teacher sent pictures on the Remind app saying she was loving all the projects. And you could tell when a parent had done it.

I'm sorry, but some of them were 3D and elaborately painted.

Natalie said they got to walk around and view the projects.

"Someone made a cake with the layers," she said.

Did a kid make that? I don't know. She said some looked fancy. She swears one music had MUSIC to accompany it. Somehow.

All I know is Natalie does her own work. And guess what?

Yup, she got an 100.

So I learned some lessons: my kid will eventually get her work done.

And there are still parents doing projects in middle school.

  4. Don't you just love it when your kid drives you nuts like not working on a project until the last minute. Good for her doing it on her own and doing a great job.

  5. I am definitely a procrastinator but I have learned my lesson quite a number of times. I know I don't save everything to the last minute. It looks like your daughter did an outstanding job even if it was last minute LOL.

  6. It's good that even if she delayed it so much, she did finish it in the end. I think it's great that you did not nag her, as she proved to you that she is responsible.

  7. That project came out so well and best of all she did it herself. It is so funny how we get stressed out about our kids homework but it is nice to be pleasantly surprised when it gets done.

  8. I am a real procrastinator, if I can do it later I will whoops! It is great that she managed to do so well in the end!

  9. How awesome from your daughter! It is great she's learning to get things done in the right amount of time and I am so glad she was rewarded for her work. She deserved it!
I will admit, I used to be a serious procrastinator in school! As hard as it may be, learning from failing (i.e. not finishing a project, or finishing but getting a bad grade) helped me learn that taking the time to get things done right -and in advance! I am not a parent, and I know it must be hard to let your child struggle and figure it out, but I know it definitely paid off for me to learn it on my own. Sounds like your daughter is ahead of the curve on that!

  10. LOL my kiddo is such a procrastinator! But he still somehow is always able to pull off good grades so I can't be mad.

  11. My kids are split. Two of them are procrastinators. The other two are not. One of my sons brings home his homework for the entire week and does it all on Monday. The other barely does what he is supposed to do every night.

  12. Great to hear that she got 100! This is so my son, he typically waits until the last-minute.

  13. Oh my. A project like this is one that is helpful to do over time, as we know as adults, but this is helpful for parents of children who tend to procrastinate. Great post!

  14. I have one of each. My eldest does her homework the second she gets it. The other needs a bit of chasing. OMG it isn't easy to keep on top of her work sometimes.

  19. My kids are the same. I get frustrated but I'm also a procrastinator sometimes lol

  20. Oh you must know my kids. They bring home the project a month before it's due, but wait until the night before.

  21. Her project looks great! Although I know from experience that it is hard not to chime in and remind kids of the deadlines, it looks like your strategy worked really well.

  25. It reminds me my kids at school and those days of projects. OMG! I think I didn't slept trying to help them at the last minute but glad they are now in the University.
You did a good job and your daughter looks so proud of the 100 score.

  30. I homeschool my two boys who are in 6th and 8th grade. I know all about the "waiting to the last minute" game. They get it from me, I know it. We are trying to be better at time management together. Not only are they learning but I am as well. Hang in there, it will all work itself out. I know it is frustrating. But like you, I've learned to back off quite a bit and they will be more independent in completing their tasks. It is just so hard for us moms to have to bite our tongues sometimes.

  31. Good job! I prefer that my kid do their homework by themselves, too! It's so important this!

  32. Procrastinating drives me nuts too. However, sometimes, just letting kids go is good for them.

  38. Your daugther has traits like me. She works well under pressure. I also love how you bragged that you didnt help her because it seems like a growing trend on parents doing their kids work instead of lettin them do their own projects so kudos to you and she got 100!

    ReplyDelete

  39. I am quite the opposite under pressure I do the worst of me. I thank therefore that my mom, above all, has always supported and helped me otherwise I think I would have been a disaster!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Go, Mom! If I hated the projects as a kids, I hate them more as a mom. lol And here I homeschool. Go figure. We still have the projects. When I retire I'll probably be helping the grand kids. Now that's a horrible though. :)

  41. Girl! Been there done that! My daughter is the queen of procastination. I remember having to run to make that deadline.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Haha, there is no way I'm doing my kids projects. I don't have time for that stuff. I barely have time to shop for their stuff to put it all together. And one of my cats would have clawed the heck out of that poster board and then eaten it. He thinks he's a dog. And the cat ate my homework is actually an excuse that is real in our house, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  43. She's really awesome and really did a great job on her project! You raised her well!

  44. I was never that kid. My sister, however, was 100% that kid. She's not 100% that teacher lol. Some people never change but I remember being so frustrated with her while my parents were just like 'What ever, she's smart...'

  49. I am a procrastinator too. I think I did one of my science projects a few days before it was due. It ended up going to the next level. My kids are responsible for their own projects. It's one thing to help them brainstorm or something but it isn't okay to do it for them.

  50. I try to motivate my son to finish early but if he decides not to listen, then he is the one stuck with finishing last minute. He has to learn

If you want to get started on the path towards a more productive life, try these techniques:

    1. Start small. Don't try to change everything at once. For example, don't try to stop procrastinating by quitting your job or quitting social media all at once. Instead, start with one small thing that you can do, such as setting up an automatic savings account or signing up for a Do my online course for me.

    2. Take mini-breaks: Sometimes it's not possible to take breaks from everything all the time, but taking mini-breaks is still important because it gives you time away from whatever you're doing without feeling like you're giving up on something important.

    3. Stop multitasking: This one might seem obvious, but multitasking has been shown to reduce productivity and increase stress levels, so make
