Cleaning Up The Graves Of Fallen Soldiers

So when we were in Ohio, Tom wanted to be sure he visited his Dad.

When we got to the cemetery, we were shocked at the state of some graves. Grass was overgrown so you couldn't even see whose stone it was.

We couldn't believe it. This was the Veterans part of the cemetery, so it didn't make sense that graves weren't being properly maintained.

So we got to work. Everyone began pulling away grass and wiping down the graves.

My daughter didn't understand why names were covered.

"These people matter," she said. If she knows that, I'm not understanding why the maintainers of the cemetery does not. The people buried there helped give them their freedom to even HAVE a cemetery to run. Shame on them for not treating the graves with respect.

If you're wondering what you can do to show respect to our fallen soldiers, I suggest going to cemeteries and cleaning up graves.

Remember why you have off on Memorial Day. It is not just about going to beaches or grilling out. It's about the soldiers who are no longer with us who gave us our freedom.

Remember.

  7. That's a shame that the graves have been overlooked, especially those of fallen soldiers. My dad visits my mom's grave every single day and he cleans up around other graves as well. I give to a fund that helps keep the cemetery looking good.

  11. It is a great exercise to help everyone (especially) the younger generation remember what the world was like and what needed to happen for a change to come about. A huge amount of things took place in the 1960s and 1970s which is less than 100 years ago.

  15. The least one can do to remember the heroes is to remember them and thank them for what we are today. So nice of you to clean the graves of the veterans. Everyone needs to chip in with whatever they can.

  20. What a wonderful thing you've taught your kids. I love that. You are right, we wouldn't have trips to the beach, or BBQs if someone didn't die for those freedoms we enjoy. Proper respect should be paid.

  29. What a shame. Around here, the town is responsible for the old cemeteries. Some of them are hundreds of years old and no one would keep up with them if the town didn’t.

  52. Yes we need to remember those who gave ultimate sacrifice for the country. They should take care of those fallen soldiers graves.

  53. I love that you did this with your family. It not only shows a great deal of patriotism, but it is a total parenting win on your part. The fact that you and your family cared enough to take time out of your day to do that with no complains is amazing. Can you imagine if all Americans stepped up this way?

  54. This is sad. Although you have already cleaned the grave, I think you also need to call the attention of those in-charge with the maintenance
