The Middle School Trip To Philly/NYC With Explore America

Natalie is going on her first school trip! Without me!

We heard about the trip to Philly and New York City with Explore America from the school. Natalie was all, "Please!" and I went, "Will you clean your room without me asking?" She replied, "I'll try," so I agreed. (And really, she has been pretty good about picking up her room.)

Also, the trip sounded cool. They'd be seeing the Franklin Institute, the Liberty Bell, the 911 Memorial, the Empire State Building....plus so much more. (And seeing The Phantom of the Opera!)

...heck, I was jealous. And no, parents can't come. The chaperones are teachers.

It's almost time for the trip and we've received a packing list:

Natalie thinks she needs a giant suitcase and I'm trying to convince her to take a carry on.

"But what about all my belongings and souvenirs?" she asked. I think she's confused thinking this is Downton Abbey and she needs to change for each meal.

However, she's in charge of her suitcase--the teachers already said that. So I think she might switch to the smaller carry on. I got her a pretty one:

There was also a parent meeting about the trip, and we had to fill out a form about any medications or allergies the student might have. Natalie has none, but I did write this:

I felt like it was important for them to know.

I've had other mothers ask if I'm nervous about her going without me. I am, a bit, but I know she'll be well taken care of. Explore America has been doing these trips for a long time, and as far as I know, they haven't lost a student yet. Also, they have their own security person so I know she'll be safe in the hotel.

Plus, I won't have time to worry, because when she's on her trip, my son and I will be at Walt Disney World. My husband is in charge of getting her to the airport. I'm probably more nervous about this than her going on the trip. But, as he likes to remind me, "I'm her FATHER, Amber, I know how to do things."

She'll be gone for 5 days, and she's ready. I do worry she'll lose something, because she's notorious for losing her stuff. But she promises she won't.

We shall see. I'll write a recap of her trip when she returns.

She also promises she'll take lots of photos, especially if she passes Lin-Manual Miranda.

So has your kid ever taken a trip without you? Or have you ever gone on a trip when you were in Middle School?

  4. It sounds like your daughter is very confident and self-assured! It sounds like you have raised a great daughter and now she is more independent because of it. I have not had my kiddo do a school trip without us but it will happen next year.

  9. I don't know what middle school is (Sorry, only Primary and High school in Australia) but in 5th and 6th grade when I went to school, we did a trip away for for a week. I got homesick, but had awesome teachers, and we learnt a lot. Of course, it was a lot different (No digital anything lol) but it was about experiences, being somewhat independent and I guess being away from home.

I hope she has an amazing time away! :D

  10. My son went to Washington, DC his 8th grade year. It was really hard. However, I was so happy for him at the same time.

  18. Looks like so much fun for a kid. I remember how much happy I was to go on my first 'adult' trip without my parents. I was 12 and I was like 'wow! I am a grown up woman'

  25. I have heard of this program before when I was in high school. I have to continue to read your posts to see what your kid thought about their trip!

  26. It must feel pretty much nervous and exciting to go through something like this. Kids enjoy being alone and independent all the time. I love that note that says "hangry" it's too cute.

  27. It sounds that your kid is going to have so much fun while you will be a little bit tensed and nervous. Being a kid (still, lol) I always want to go on trips without my parents. It makes me feel happy and independent both.
