1. Make it seem normal. As usual, I had presents and balloons out in the morning. Some people even use crepe paper and tape up the birthday person's door so they have to break out.
2. Order food to go. Yes, you might not be able to eat in a restaurant as planned, but most places offer delivery or you are able to pick up. My daughter requested Chipotle. We also ordered a cake from Great American Cookie and I just picked it up.
3. Pick up fun balloons. Most grocery stores are open, so find balloons that will be amusing. My daughter cracked up at this dinosaur. She said it looked like the part where you can attach a string was a penis. Okay, then. I didn't even notice that.
4. Reassure them. My daughter is an extrovert, so it's tough being away from friends. I reminded her that when things are back to normal that I'd take her and a friend to get their nails done. That helps give them something to look forward to.
5. Have family and friends FaceTime or text. Natalie had several friends call and wish her a happy birthday. Even though she couldn't see them in person, she still appreciated all the love from afar.
Having a birthday during a pandemic might not be what was expected, but it can still be a great day. My daughter says she'll always remember turning thirteen so the memories might not be what was expected, but they'll be memories nonetheless.
We're going to have to take your advice in about a week!

ReplyDeleteIt looks like a great birthday celebration! Hopefully, she can celebrate with her friends before too long. We are expecting our first grandchild in a couple of weeks. I am disappointed that I won't be able to meet him or her right away, but I'm excited to see photos. The most important thing is minimizing the risk of getting sick!

ReplyDeleteEven during a pandemic, it looks like a great birthday. My daughter's birthday was RIGHT before everything went crazy so we were able to go out of town.
ReplyDeleteThis is the cutest! We've always had small intimate immediate family parties, so memorable. No birthday's in the midst of this craziness, though, thankfully.

ReplyDeleteevery thing changes during this time including birthdays. Had my neighbors grand daughter have a b-day and they had a honk as you go by birthday. Where there is a will there is a way Happy Birthday and thanks for sharing the story

ReplyDeleteI admit that I admire myself very much, you and your children always managed to be magical. To create, excite and inspire others!
My kids are luckily too young to understand that anything is different right now because they really don't have anything to compare it to! This year was definitely different for all celebrations! Great advise for celebrating!
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestions. A lot of my friends with smaller children and teens younger than my son, usually have a birthday car-cade where their friends are driven by and they can drop off gifts, or just wish Happy Birthday. Often other people drive by and honk to give their own brief greetings... sorta a mini bday parade. lol

ReplyDeleteYES! It's so crazy to believe we are nearly a YEAR into this. Which means all of us has had a birthday during this crazy time. In October when my eldest turned 8, I hired someone to put a sign out in the yard for everyone. Now my middle child is turning 5 in a week and I hired the same person to put a gigantic happy birthday sign in our yard. Birthdays may look different, but they can still be memorable!
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestions. It's my mum's 50th soon so we're hoping to have a virtual party!
ReplyDeleteWe did all of these things! We celebrated my youngest son's birthday last November and my eldest son's birthday earlier this month.
