Cleaning Out School Lockers

Well, cleaning out school lockers was different this year. Usually it's Natalie going through her pile of crap that she's shoved in her locker throughout the year. This year someone else did it due to the lockdown. And I felt bad for them, because can you imagine some of the smells in middle school lockers?

"Mine didn't stink. It was messy, but at least there wasn't a smell," Natalie told me as we waited in the car line. You couldn't go in. You got in line at the school drop off during an assigned day and you couldn't get out of your car.

The cars in front of us were handed small bags of locker contents so I thought, okay, that'll be the same for us.

What was handed over looked like an overnight bag. Or maybe a bag that would last 3 days. I was like, "Natalie, what on earth did you have in your locker?"

She replied, "Everything."

I mean, her room is messy, so I'm not surprised her locker was the same way. And again. Thank you to all the people stuck cleaning out lockers.

Here's Natalie and her locker bag:

Most of it was old papers that she had shoved in there. Plus gum. And old clothes and the winter hat she claimed she lost but in reality she had stuffed in her locker because "it didn't go with my skin tone."

This school year was anything but normal. But it officially ends Thursday.

"Next year maybe keep your locker clean?" I suggested.

Natalie shrugged. "I'll try. But I doubt it'll happen."

Did you keep your locker clean? I did not. I tried, but it never stayed clean.

  1. We had locker things handed over the same way. Zachary's things never made it to us though!

  5. Is interesting to know what stuff kids can keep inside their lockers. I didn't have a locker growing up because my school system didn't allow it.But I had a messy room so I think it is kind of equivalent.

  6. Mine was mostly clean, but sometimes I was in a rush. It was never perfect but I could at least usually find what I needed.

  7. I never did keep my locker very clean. I was always envious of the people who had the perfectly decorated lockers but I just ran to it between classes, grabbed what I needed and stuffed the things I didn't need inside. I never spent enough time there to care! I probably would have liked to have someone else clean mine out for me though :)

  8. Good grief. Did i even have a locker? I think I did in high school, but it wasn't much in there at all. I didn't even take the time to decorate knowing it was temporary.

  11. Ahh! Memories! I think my locker was kept clean. I will say that my younger sister would "borrow" my clothes and keep them in her locker away from me!

  12. We got the contents of the kids lockers last week. For elementary school, everything was bagged up for us. But for middle school, kids were by appointment and had to wear a mask and gloves, and had 20 minutes to get their locker contents, yearbook, and gym clothes.

  18. This year has been different for many reasons due to the lockdown. I'm sorry your daughter didn't get to experience the things she normally would at this time.

  19. I've always been a minimalist/essentialist, so my high school locker never had much in it. Fun fact, I still remember my locker combination number.

  20. Definitely one of the hardest things to do in school but one of the best to have. It's really sad to say that this is not the year for that and hoping we can get back to our usual norm in this life.

  23. As far as I remember I did not have a locker at school, but I did have one at work and it was messy because you get given so many items that can easily be considered junk. Haha!
