How To Fly On An Airplane Safely

So yes, there's a pandemic going on, and I completely understand why people are uneasy about flying. But we did. My husband is going to be deploying, so he wanted to be sure he said goodbye to family. Was I nervous? Of course. But I also knew my family was going to be safe about it.

For starters, we had masks. And we wore them all the time. The only time they were off was when we were eating or drinking. WEAR THE MASKS.

Second, I had antibacterial wipes, plus hand sanitizer. I wiped down the areas we were at.

Airports also had hand sanitizer all around.

Chairs are blocked off so people can have that physical distance.

I also found airports weren't that crowded.

If you fly Southwest, which we did, all middle seats are empty until September 30th and they make sure people keep face masks on. Some people tried to take off masks in flight and the attendant quickly told them to put it back on.

We felt safe.

So did Steve.

So if you need to fly, here's what I suggest having:

--Masks, multiple ones. Throw away the ones you wear on the airplane. Or if you prefer not to, wash the mask as soon as you return home.

--Get antibacterial wipes. Southwest did not give you wipes to scrub down your seats, HOWEVER, after each flight, I noticed a cleaning crew go in. I imagine they were scrubbing everything down.

--Lots of hand sanitizer. The airports have them all over, but I put some on before, during, and after the flight.

---An airline that won't pack the people on. As I said before, Southwest will be keeping middle seats open until September 30th. You can sit in a middle seat if you are with family, however. But you won't have to worry about a stranger sitting right next to you. Also, the beverage service is slightly different: they give you ice water and a snack mix.

It's a personal decision if you decide to fly.  Some might not feel comfortable yet, and some do.

Steve, I'm proud to say, earned his wings for being such a good flyer. (And yes, we totally wiped down the safety card.)

  1. I'm kind of scared to fly at the moment, although with precautions I guess it's as safe as anything else.

  3. Thank you for this. My mom will be flying with SW in a few weeks and I was really worried about her doing that. But I think it will be a long time before I get back on a plane. And not because of Covid, but because of my last flight was a bit too rough for me.

  11. Steve is looking good reading his safety card! All my flights and trips have been cancelled so far this year. I'm still a little leery of flying as the only airlines in our area are doing full flights.

  26. As things stand now, with all the restrictions placed on passengers, I don't plan to fly at all unless out of absolute necessity. There is no scientific consensus on mask efficacy, and in fact the RCT studies I've read suggest they don't stop the spread of respiratory viruses, so we don't wear them.

I do like the way they are spacing people out more, though, because I've always been claustrophobic hahaha. Not having to sit next to a stranger sounds great!

  29. At this moment I would rather stay away from flying expect for some emergencies, while coming to bangalore from Mumbai travelled by road even tough it was long, but i think if take of all the essential safety norms for travelling it would be safe enough to travel

  36. I'm not surprised you were nervous I would have been too. It's good that people we made to distance by having seats blocked off and that anyone removing masks were made to put them back on quickly. It must have been quite reassuring that there were so many measures in place.
