Is Walt Disney World Safe?

When I told people we were going to Walt Disney World, they were like, "Okay? But there's a pandemic going on."

My sarcastic self was like:

But I knew Disney was taking all these measures to keep everyone safe. We had a trip planned in June, it was canceled, so we moved to August. I had heard about all the safety measures and was curious to see them.

To start off with, temperatures are checked before even entering the park.

Bag checks are pretty easy. No one touches your stuff unless the alarm goes off. It went off for me since I had portable batteries but the man checking wore gloves.

Oh, and there's signs everywhere:

There are safety markers:

Sanitizer stands are sprinkled all over the parks.

Plus, there's hand washing stations:

Want to eat? Well, you'll have to mobile order. This means it's not crowded inside the food places. When your order is ready, you can go inside and tables are marked off if they are too close to others.

The cast members make sure your mask is on correctly. If it looks like it's dipping below the nose, one will pop up and kindly remind you to pull up the mask. I saw kids running around with a mask and they were quickly told to put it back on. In a polite Disney fashion.

Yes, you MUST keep masks on when you take photos with Photopass cast members, but I think it's a great memory. "Remember that one time we went to Disney during a pandemic?" There are many Photopass cast members around the parks so it's still worth the cost. (Note: they will not take photos with your phone currently.)

If you get tired of wearing your mask, there are relaxation stations throughout the parks where you can go and take them off. If you're going in the summer, it gets HOT so breaks are a must.

Want to see characters? You still can! But from a distance.

Also, trash cans are propped open so you don't have to touch:

Buses are boarded by number with safety partitions. A lot of rides had these as well to separate parties:

Did I feel safe? Yes. It's safer there than a grocery store. I know my grocery store doesn't have tons of sanitizer around and most workers won't correct people wearing a mask incorrectly.

Were the parks truly low capacity? Yes. I've gone where you've been shoulder to shoulder with strangers. Granted, Hollywood Studios seemed more crowded because it's a smaller park, but all ride wait times were under 60 minutes. Most were under 30. This was Epcot in the afternoon during our Food & Wine walk:

Would I recommend going? Well, that depends. I'm not about to urge everyone to vacation during a pandemic. But I will say that my family felt safe. My mom went with us, and she's in her 60s, so she's in that cautious area. I saw tons of babies. So really, it's up to you. Yes, it's not quite the same: no fireworks, no up close character meet and greets, limited shows...but YOU create the magic.

We made a lot of fantastic memories and this will truly be a trip I remember forever.

  2. I have actually never been to a Disney park before. I have been starting to travel slowly in my own country and did notice how much effort the public places are putting into keeping everything sanitized.

  8. It's really interesting to see what they're doing at Disney. I loved your comment about the pandemic at the beginning. I received a comment about Instagram because some friends and I went to a small touristy town and it was dead. Someone commented saying we're in a pandemic. I'm aware. Getting out to explore during a pandemic isn't for everyone, but for some it's incredibly helpful for the mental health toll this can take. There are towns that are able to have people pass through and do well with masks and social distancing and utilizing outdoor spaces. If that's not right for your town, that's totally fine. It's worth having your businesses update Google, though.

  24. The Nicholas Cage Gif made me CRACK UP! I totally relate! I definitely want to go to the parks soon, I mean there's barely any lines compared to normal and I'll rock my mask all day for that! Though I won't be bringing my 3 year old because he is unable to wear a mask, at 3 he doesn't understand and fights me... but my daughter and I are ready!

  26. You go girl! I have spent two weekends away in my state and have flown 3 times since this "pandemic" started. I am also an essential worker via my hubby's biz. Worked the entire time and have yet to get sick. But I haven't been sick in years. So I plan on keeping up the enjoyment! The only thing I did have to do was delay my London trip. So that isn't happening this fall, but I a sure I will spend a couple more weekends in the mountains instead!
