You Don't Need A Pinterest Dorm

It's that time of year where parents are moving their kids into dorms.

And a lot of those dorms look, well, like Pinterest threw up all over them.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. You SHOULD be comfortable in your dorm.

But.

Sometimes I feel like it's a bit...much.

Mind you, it's easier when you have a boy. Boys don't seem to care as much about aesthetics and such.

Here's his room:

Pretty basic.

He didn't care about curtains. His bedding is simple from Target

It truly is okay if the dorm room doesn't look like IKEA threw up in it.

Now, if my daughter moves into a dorm, she might want more decor. And I'll let her know it's fine, but she will have a budget.

So again: do not feel bad if your child's room doesn't look like it's come from a magazine.

The most important thing is that your kid knows that they have your support whenever they need it. In the grand scheme of things, a room is low priority.

So long as you're there, that's all that truly matters.

(And also, you're there to remind your son to wash his sheets.)

  1. There is no reason to decorate a dorm room over the top. Most dorm rooms are tiny and have limited space. It’s more important to have the necessities rather than tons of decor.

  2. Great perspective! You don’t need Pinterest for a stylish dorm—personal touches and creativity go a long way!

  4. I so agree! My kids had simple but yet really nice dorms that had everything they needed but upon looking at some of the other kid's rooms I was surprised to see how extravagant they were.

  6. I mean this in a good, supportive way of course!! Even if pinterest aesthetics are nice, comfort (physical and emotional) /should/ take priority!

  7. If I had a dorm, I would want it to be CUTE and memorable. Too many ideas not to put to use.

  8. I agree, especially if they are staying out of state. Our oldest is and they bought a lot of their own decor and stuff. Now they'll have to figure out how to take it all with them when they leave. LOL... They are now in an apartment there but this will be their last year.

  9. My son wants the Pinterest room. I had to say no to so many things that he wanted as they wont fit in the car.

  10. I have seen some really big dorm ideas out there! I think people can definitely take things over the top. My son has a lot of stuff planned for his dorm, but nothing too crazy.
