In honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, I decided to make a list of the good and bad Mom moments that I’ve experienced. Happy Mother's Day!
Good Mom Moment: Reading to the kids every night even though Dr. Seuss makes my head hurt.
Bad Mom Moment: Reading books about poop. Our favorite is Everyone Poops.
Good Mom Moment: Not being in denial and getting Tommy help as soon as I realized he was behind in his development.
Bad Mom Moment: Allowing the kids to occasionally watch Family Guy.
Good Mom Moment: Buying vegetables and serving them as a snack to the kids.
Bad Mom Moment: Buying chocolate and serving them as a snack to the kids.
Good Mom Moment: Running to Natalie’s room when I hear her cry in the dead of night.
Bad Mom Moment: Not allowing her to sleep in bed with me.
Good Mom Moment: Using the b-word in front of the kids.
Bad Mom Moment: Telling the kids that I didn’t REALLY say a bad word because bitch means female dog. Now my son will occasionally go, “Look, it’s a dog. Do you think it’s a bitch?” And Natalie sometimes points at a dog and goes, “A bitch?” Ugh. Parenting FAIL!
Good Mom Moment: Insisting that Santa exists even when Tommy is starting to not believe.
Bad Mom Moment: Insisting that Santa exists even when Tommy is starting to not believe and saying things like, “You better be good. Santa watches all year and if you’re mean to me, no presents.”
Good Mom Moment: Not allowing the kids to socialize with the children of those “perfect” mothers anymore because let’s face it, the kids are usually pretty scary too.
Bad Mom Moment: Allowing Tommy to play with one of those kids from “perfect” mothers ONCE and being slightly traumatized when the mother said coldly, “Oh, Barnaby*** doesn’t eat non-organic items and he most definitely is never given juice.” (Followed by a condescending sniff.) Slipped Barnaby non-organic item anyway and watched with glee as he gobbled it down.
***not real name, his name was actually pretty normal but just in case crazy Mom ever stumbles on my blog and tries to lecture us about eating organically again.

Love the list. Happy Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteNone of those bad things seem that bad - clearly you're a great mom!
ReplyDeleteI don't think not letting your kid sleep in bed with you should be under "bad mom moment" as I let my oldest sleep with me until she was 3...and let me tell you..it was pure HELL getting her into her own bed!! The following three spawn slept in their own beds...regardless of how scared or sick they were and I am perfectly OK with that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mothers day :)
Amber, these were great. But I can say from the bottom of my heart that it is a Good Mom Moment, not letting her sleep with you. My youngest is 9 and still sneaks in in the middle of the night.
ReplyDeleteI want to slap those high and mighty moms!
ReplyDeleteI love your list. It is so true :-)
hahaha! Once again, priceless!
ReplyDeleteYou are the most REAL blogger I read! You impress me every post!
Happy Mothers Day lady!
Love your good and bad mommy moments! I have way to many to list.Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteThe "B" Word...hahahaha! I swear in front of my son all the time. It's my vice. He understands that those are adult words. I figure, hey, at least he has something to look forward to when he becomes an adult besides bills.
ReplyDeleteThe Santa thing cracked me up. I told my son that the security cameras in stores were "Santa Cams". Man, that was the best mom moment I think I've ever had.
"Those Mothers" are hopped up on Ritalin and need to get laid ; )
Love this post.
Happy Mother's Day!
This is EXCELLENT b/c it shows what good mothering is all about: balance. All good is boring and no stories.
ReplyDeleteAll bad is bad, well, b/c it's all bad.
But bad with good is memories and stories and a sweet, sweet childhood.
Happy Mother's Day!
Love the list. I think you are a great mom.
ReplyDeleteBTW... have you ever read Walter the Farting Dog? It's a favorite in our house.
Happy Mother's Day, Amber! You are an AWESOME mom.
ReplyDeleteMost of your Bad Mom Moments do not seem all that bad to me. So does that make me a bad mom? Nah!
ReplyDeleteHahahaha!!! Parental fail! You are hilarious! You sound like a great mom to me. Happy early mothers day!!!
ReplyDeleteAll food IS organic (by the chemist's definition of organic as being anything containing the atom carbon)! OK, I'm a Geek, but I love saying that to people that get all high and mighty about organic food. Yes, I know that organic means no pesticides (or is it no artificial pesticides?), but who wants bug infested food?
ReplyDeleteWell, I think they even each other out. For sure. Even the bitch dog one.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure your bad mom moments count... they don't seem all that bad to me!
ReplyDeleteThose seem pretty tame. I should make a list like this.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a fabulous Mother's Day. :)
Oh my gosh, I am cracking up that you fed him non-organic food. Bwahahaha. Serves her right.
ReplyDeleteMy kids watch Family Guy too and the opening song where it is supposed to laugh and cry but it sounds like a bad word...yeah, they sing the bad word.
Glad to know I am not the only good/bad mom.
ReplyDeleteAnd those "woman" are SO annoying..
We let Jay watch Family Guy, too. The other day I said, "Ricky Martin is gay." Jay responded with, "YAY!" I think he's turning into Stewie. ;)
ReplyDeleteI am going to tell you what my mother told me many, many years ago.
ReplyDelete"Don't worry too much honey, no matter what you do your children WILL need therapy"
LOL. Happy Mother's Day from one mom to another.
errr, i don't think you're a bad mom for not letting your daughter sleep with you. i think you're a good mom who likes to be not crazy.
ReplyDeleteI love the book "Everybody Poops." We used to read it out loud to each other in high school. It was excellent.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any of your "bad mom" moments are bad. The Barnaby thing cracked me up.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day. :)
If those are your worse bad mom moments then Id say you are a great mom!
ReplyDeleteI dunno, I think feeding them chocolate is a sign that you are a great mom...but then, chocolate is love, in my book.
ReplyDeleteWait! When did chocolate not become OK to give the kids as a snack????
ReplyDeleteDamn, I must be a really, really, really bad mom then...
(BTW, happy Mother's Day!)
Tommy and Natalie know you are the best Mom they will ever have! And that's the truth! You are a perfect Mom and don't even know it!
ReplyDeleteLol! Love the last one. Some people just try way too hard and are way too proud of how hard they try.
ReplyDeleteAnd come on you know you really like Everyone poops ;)
Don't feel bad about not letting Natalie get in bed with you when she wakes up at night. We didn't either...went to their rooms and comforted them. It was probably one of the best things we did.
ReplyDeleteNo kids in bed! You'll sleep better.
ReplyDeleteI think "Barnaby" might be my granddaughter 'cause the description of the mother definitely sounds like my daughter-in-law. I take great pleasure in feeding the poor kid all kinds of yummy things when Mommy isn't around.
ReplyDeleteThe b word? Bath? Brussels sprouts? Bananas? Blog?
ReplyDeleteThose moments you counted as Bad Moments? Not a one counts as bad in my book. Even - the B word; why? Because you are expanding his vocabulary - and it's a real word! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteOrganic mothers are so annoying. I am with you on that!
ReplyDeleteI know someone who insists her children are allergic to red dye because it makes them hyper. Nope, they are just way outta control all the time. We tried to give them red dye all the time, but they know exactly what foods have it and they won't eat it.
Such a pity.
Happy Mother's Day!! I agree that your bad mother actions are really just good mother actions with a little extra color and spice. =)
ReplyDeleteSaying the B-word was a good mom moment? I suppose if it's an alternative to the F-word, then yup it's a good mom moment.
ReplyDeleteI take a page out of Eugene Levy's book in 'The Man', when I am about to say the F-word I change it quickly to "For Crying Out Loud". "Fuh...Crying Out Loud!", but sometimes the real thing just slips out. Bad Mom Moment.
My kids love the book Dirty Bertie, where he eats his boogers and wees in the garden--real quality literature there.
this is a great list for Mother's day - every mother who cares and tries is perfect, the "bad" mommy moments are all a part of it. Happy Mommy's day - I hope you have a happy one!
ReplyDeleteI love your list lol I want to join the fun....
ReplyDeleteGood mom moment: riding bikes with my son today
Bad mom moment: only going around the block twice before I was too cold and saying op look at the time we need to go in for lunch :)
Family guy is a cartoon.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking you are doing pretty great so far! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteLOL, you sounds like a great mom to me!
ReplyDeleteGreat list. And chocolate is good for you! Happy Mother's Day - hope it's a great one for you!
ReplyDeleteThe children of those Stepford Mommies ARE scary!
ReplyDeleteooh, you mean you're not supposed to feed your kids chocolate for snack and say bitch in front of them? Well crap! Im screwed!
ReplyDeleteI cant keep my 3 yr old out of my bed. Seriously. I may need like an electric fence around it to keep him out!
i love your list! oh, i have one:
ReplyDeletegood mom moment: hearing my son call out and feel needed
bad mom moment: hearing my son call out and feel needed ALL THE TIME (why cant he call out to his dad?)
shuttling in from SITS :)
I agree - perfect children are BAD
ReplyDeleteYou sound like a great Mom!
Happy Mother's Day!
Made me laugh ... that's a great list! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog! Your blog rocks! Anything that makes me laugh that much, I follow! Oh, and happy Mother's Day to you!
ReplyDeleteLoved the list! That's all I know is - Motherhood is hard. The End.
ReplyDeleteI love the book everybody poops! (Is it bad that I own a copy, but don't have any kids? ha!;)
ReplyDeleteI love it! At least you're keeping it real!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mothers Day.
Ugh I have ran into those scary mothers...I am thoroughly convinced they are born to speak in that mommy voice that makes me want to punch them...and I watch with glee when they find out the snack I provided for the children is not hiked down a Himilayan path and fertilized by organically fed goats...ack..or something like that..
ReplyDeleteAnyway..I enjoy your blog so much that I gave you an award..congrats and have a great weekend!
Everyone poops seems to be everyone's favorite at some point! I mean how could you not love the title!
ReplyDeleteI love your list, I think you captured motherhood very well!
Oh I LOVE THIS POST! I have these lists every day I think! And as a mom who DOES try to feed my kids and myself organic foods as much as possible, I am NO snoot (and I HATE those better-than-thou mommy voices!) and fall off the wagon regularly. And when friends ask if his diet is restricted I always answer, "Yes. I prefer he not eat things that are still living. They fight back and then I have to do all the work of listening to the whining and tending to the scars! Other than that, have at it!"
ReplyDeleteYay for honesty and have a great Mother's Day!
I love how you slipped him "non-organic" food. You rock girl!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day!
♥Spot
Most of those 'bad' moments sound pretty good to me! Especially Barnaby... ;)
ReplyDeleteHi! New reader here...I think it's a good mom moment when you didn't let your daughter sleep in bed with you!! I started the bad habit of letting our toddler climb in with us, and guess what he wants to do every single night?!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day!
Now that is a great list.
ReplyDeleteYou're a really good mom.
Happy Mother's Day,
jj
Great list. The bad Mom moments are what make you a great Mum. And the non organic thing- great going! I totally agree- scary snobby mum= scary, possible evil child. Fact.
ReplyDeleteYou are being to hard on yourself. I knew I was a good mommy when my kids were still alive at the end of the day! I guess I had different standards LOL
ReplyDeleteAnne-Marie
Oh, my hubs is definitely guilty of the Family Guy thing. And I can so relate to your glee over Barnaby.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see the children of these "perfect" moms 10 years from now.
Hope you had a pretty wonderful Mother's Day.
happy mothers Day! I love and can relate to all your good mom/bad mom tidbits!
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I know that poop book only too well! Happy Belated Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from SITS

Happy belated Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteAnd its alright to be uptight with those "perfect" mothers...
...they aren't doing anyone any favors and more harm than good.
A very fun Mother's Day post. I'm a grandma now, but I can remember plenty of bad mom/good mom moments.
ReplyDeleteI love the Bitch one.... My son is finally after lots of therapy beginning to talk (Apraxia) and now is beginning to be a parrot. The other day I took the wrong turn and said "Oh, F**k" About three minutes later he dropped his hat and said "Oh f**k Oh f**k" Does this constitute as a Bad mommy moment?
