Tommy Asks About God

Um.

Natalie slept from 9:30 last night until...3:15!!

Is this normal??

I was paranoid that she was starving.

Actually I thought she was dead.

Tom was here and I raced downstairs and she was in her swing.

I had put her in her bassinet before.

Tom said she started to wake around 11 so he put her in the swing and she fell back to sleep.

He got angry with me for waking her up.

I just was SURE she was starving.

But she only took a few sucks and went back to sleep.

Is THAT normal??

Surely she had to be hungry.

Then she went back to sleep and woke up at 6.

She nursed a little bit longer this time at least but I expected a long feeding and she only nursed for five minutes.

Anyhow.

Last night we were sitting down for dinner. I had Natalie in my lap because that's the only way I can eat my food warm. It's not easy.

I was about to dig in when Tommy shouted,

"Mommy wait!"

I nearly jumped out of my skin.

"What!"

Tommy clasped his hands together.

"God is great, God is good
And we thank him for this food.
Amen."

Actually the second line came out jibberish from him but I knew what he was trying to say.

Tom and I stared at him with wide eyes.

"Um, where did you learn that?" I asked.

"Grandma!"

"Ahh..that's cool," I said and went to dig into my food again.

"Mommy?" Tommy asked.

"Yes?"

"What's God?"

Oh dear.

It's not that I don't believe in God. I do. It's just religion has always made me slightly uncomfortable. I believe in a higher being and all that but some of the things in the Bible seem ridiculous to me. I've never been opposed to teaching Tommy about religion though. Tom and I always said if he wanted to go to church that we'd take him.

But back to Tommy's question.

"Tommy," I began. "God is this dude who had a son named Jesus.."

Tom cut me off. "AMBER! You can't start off with "God is this dude.." He's GOD not a dude.."

"He's a man is he not? Therefore he could be a dude.."

Tommy was staring at us back and forth.

"Amber. Let me explain. You forget I went to church in high school.."

This is true.

So Tom explained to Tommy and Tommy went, "Oh okay."

Then later during the night Tommy ran up to me and went, "God is cool!"

I rubbed his hair. "Yeah Tommy. God is pretty cool.."
