Adventures with Steak-Umms

So I bought the bread so Tom could make his Steak-Umm sandwiches.

"I can't quite remember how to make them," Tom said, scratching his head.

Then why did he buy Steak-Umms in the first place?

*Le Sigh*

Thankfully Jennifer gave me the link for this site:

It had a video on how to make a Steak Umm sandwich.

Then I asked Tom if he planned on cutting up vegetables.

"What for?" he asked.

"Um. Our sandwich?" I didn't want a plain Steak-Umm sandwich with cheese. No thanks.

"I wasn't planning on it," Tom admitted.

"Could you saute some onions?"

Tom knitted his eyebrows. "Saute?"

I half expected him to go, "Thems fancy words! What's a saute?"

"I'll saute," I said quickly.

Tom got the box of Steak-Umms out.

"They remind me of tongues," I said as Tom stuck two on a saucepan.

"Giant cow tongues," I continued. "Is that how they're supposed to look? They look gross."

"They are not gross," Tom argued. "They are delicious."

"But they're rectangular!"

"Give the Steak Umms a chance!"

(That's Tom's usual expression. It's why people always ask me if he's mad. No. He's not mad. That's just the way he looks.)

"They smell weird," I said.

"They smell delicious," Tom answered.

This is Tom's boring sandwich:

"Ketchup?" I said as Tom squeezed some on. "Ew. I'm putting mayo on mine."

This is my awesome sandwich:

Mayo, mustard, Steak-Umm with swiss cheese, onions and tomatoes.

It was pretty good. It's probably not something I'd want often though.

Anyhow. That's my adventure with Steak Umms.

I never knew steak could look and smell like that.

  1. We like Steak Um...usually we make them like the cheap version of a philly steak samich.

I don't know about ketchup but yours looks pretty good with the onions & tomatoes.

  2. We used to have Steak Ums in the school cafeteria - I loved them. Now we eat steak hoagies, in Cinci speak. They are pretty similar and they are DELISH.

  3. I love Steak-Umms. At my grocery store they sell a very thinly sliced package of frozen meat very much like Steak-Umms. But it seems more "real" then the Steak-Umms which come out of a box. Your sandwich looks totally awesome!

  4. So, after all that... you still pretty much made dinner.

And yes, they do look like cow tongues.

  5. That does look like tongue . . . I dunno how I feel about that . . . I wonder if they sell them here in Cali . . . I'm gonna have to look for them.

  6. My husband loves Steak-Ums too, but I hate them. Too bad since they are so easy to make. At least you have a new recipe now!

  7. What a deadly glance. Hey, just kidding! just saying ;-)

  8. My husband made me try them once too. Apparently his mom used to make them.

There okay, but I think I can do better.

  9. My mother used to make steak ums...with saute'd onions and peppers...they were ok...but I think after I read "cow tongue" I'll never eat one again :-P lol

  12. My hubby (the cook in the family) would absolutely die if I asked him to make that. He is a food snob to the nth degree (he makes me crazy). But he does make steak sandwiches that are a AWESOME!!!! And not with ketchup!

  15. Cheerful, shmeerful, as long as he cooks! Help is good, although maybe it IS better when it's not too grudging! =^)

  16. Steak Umms, wow, the post takes me back to being a kid & those being on sale.

Although I can attest they don't taste quite like cow's tongue--yep, had that too (thanks Grandma).

  17. The onions are OK, but yes, you need the ketchup - yours is just a perversion.

  18. How is it that I have never heard of these? They look interesting to say the least. I've never seen steak that looks like that!

  19. Oh thank you for having this experience and sharing it, so I won't have too!

  20. Your sandwich made me hungry.

Toms...not so much. But hey. Kudos to him cause he bought them in the first place. (Is he reading this?)

    :)

  21. I honestly had no idea they even still made those things! I remember the commercials from back in the day with one of the guys who starred in The Odd Couple television show, I think. I've never had them, but if I ever had to venture into that territory, I'd probably opt for your version of it, without the tomato. And maybe extra cheese to hide the look of them some more!

  22. Yours looks good. Tom's looks like something my husband would want. He puts ketchup on everything.

  23. Wow, I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like that and I hope I don't have to again.

    ;)

  24. Well, thank goodness you got to eat the Steak Ums, I was worried Tom was going to completely give up :)

  25. They do sort of look like tongues! But at least you got to try something different! :)

  26. Ive never ventured there.. they look.. interesting...

  27. I think they are only "steak" in the sense that Spam is "ham."

  28. I love me some Steak-Umms! They're one of those foods that's a relic of my childhood and I tend to forget they exist ... then I'll notice them in the freezer section one day and bam, fall in love with them all over again. :)

  29. oh man...you're braver than i am! i don't think i could do rectangular meat! lol...

  30. This reminds me of the time I made my Mom buy Spam when I was little. I'd never ever had it and I didn't know what it was, so she bought it for me. That was my one and only experience with Spam. Ugh, how do people eat that stuff?!

  31. Yours definitely gets my vote- looks lovely. Although the shape of the meat makes me quaestion if they ahve ever actually met a cow...

  32. Steak-Ums looks nasty. The sandwich doesn't look too bad, but steak hoagies should have real meat on them. ;) And I would have added sauteed mushrooms to mine. :D

  33. I absolutely positively LOVE when you put pics of your hubby up. his expression is freaking hilarious. I always laugh out loud.

And I have not had steak umms in decades. I use to love them. I would fry them up then put a piece of cheddar cheese in them. YUMMY! If I ate them now I would gain 10 pounds instantly. But back then bring em on.

  34. I think its safe to say I wont be trying those any time soon. I will stick with steak that actually looks like steak

  35. You built a masterpiece out of Steak-Umms but after reading that they look and smell weird while cookin' I don't think this farm chick could handle it. I have a freezer filled with beef hand fed right off the Ponderosa. Very blessed I am, now I'm hungry!

Ya'll have a wonderfully blessed day!!!

  36. We used to make these all the time. Then I forgot about them. Thanks for reminding me!

P.S. Your sandwich looks better than Tom's!

    ReplyDelete
  37. oooh.. yours looks waaa-aaay better!

  38. I love me some Steak-Ums...put in some lettuce and that sandwich of yours would be just right for me...so close to lunch...now I'm hungry!! Ugh ;)

  39. I didn't even realize that Steak-Umms were still around. My dad used to LOVE them and he'd ask me to make him a steak sandwich every Saturday afternoon! They're actually not bad but I agree that it's not something you want to eat too often!

  40. How much of those things do you actually think are made from real meat? I wonder what the rest is. . .

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'll just take your word for it!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Mmmmmm! I'm so hungry right now I could eat both of your sandwiches!
