Our Vacation Begins....

So here’s the thing.

We leave for our trip on Tuesday.

But I’m not going with Tom and the kids in the beginning.

I’m going to visit my best friend in Ohio. She lived across the street from me when we were stationed in England.

Granted, I’ll only get to see her for two days but I’ll take it. See, Tom’s Mom used to live in Ohio and Jennifer, that’s who I’m going to visit, only lived a few hours away. So we made plans to see each other. Then Tom’s Mom decided to go to North Carolina and we had already made plans so I wasn’t about to give them up.

So in the end, I guess it’s a better outcome for me.

Two days without kids?

Sweeettt.

A flight by myself without having to worry about giving a kid a snack or telling another kid to keep it down? Bliss.

I’m all ready to go but as I said before, I suck at packing. I packed for the kids and am trying to explain to Tom what outfits go together so he doesn’t put Natalie in pink pants and a yellow shirt like he’s done before.

“And this,” I said lifting up an adorable pair of Gymboree shorts, “go with this shirt,” I continued waving a Gymboree shirt in the air.

Tom concentrated on picking his toe cheese.

“Did you hear me? You are going to be in charge of dressing Natalie for two days, you know.” I bit my lip to keep from adding, “It’s an important undertaking.”

“I’ll just let her run around in her diaper,” Tom said, chuckling. I really don’t think he was joking.

“Um,” I said. “No. And whatever you do, don’t put her in her 4th of July outfit. I will be putting her in that on the 4th of July.”

Tom blinked at me as though I were speaking in foreign tongues.

“This is her 4th of July outfit,” I said, waving around the red, white and blue ensemble. “Do not put it on her.”

Tom scratched his cheek. “And if I do, what then? Will the world end?”

Ugh.

“Just don’t do it,” I said through gritted teeth. “And I like to coordinate her barrette with her outfit, as well as her hair ties,” I said.

“If I remember to even do her hair,” Tom answered flippantly.

Oh for the love of chocolate.

“Just....keep her alive. That’s all I ask. Just keep her alive.” I gave up. Tom obviously didn’t get it.

Did I mention that we have to wake up at FOUR in the morning on Tuesday? FOUR IN THE MORNING? Have I mentioned that I am not a morning person?

But.

As I mentioned before I’ll be flying to see Jennifer without kids.

This means I can…SLEEP on the plane. Like Tom does! I’m not kidding. We’ll be on the flight and he’ll just fall asleep and leave me to tend to the kids. One time I threw a Cheerio at his rude sleeping face, I was so frustrated.

So that’s why I don’t feel guilty making him fly with the kids on his own.

Have fun, Tom.

I know I will.

  2. Oh, you lucky duck! I'm hoping to have my chance in October. My cousin is getting married and I'm a bridesmaid. Kids aren't invited and I see no reason why hubs can't take a few days off to watch them while mommy goes on a lil vacation. we deserve it! I hope he remembers the matching hair barrets;)

  3. Oh, I am consumed with the green eyed monster right now.

    It's not a nice feeling...

  6. Sounds fun! Hope you have a blast. I have to get up at 4 am twice a week--and I hate it. Little advice: Go to bed early if you can and plan on getting some sort of nap in that day (hopefully you can sleep on the plane--I never can).

  7. You are too funny w/ the outfits! I had to give all that up once my daughter decided SHE was going to decide what to wear. Some of the stuff she's left the house in would make your eyeballs fall out. But in the end, it doesn't matter. She was happy.

Anyway - enjoy your trip! I'm going to NYC in Aug. and you better believe I'm looking forward to that long plane ride!

  9. I love to travel on my own. Granted my kids are older but still no bickering and picking at each other.

My husband used to put the girls clothes on backwards "don't the buttons go in the front"

Me.. "no, can't you see the tag which always goes in the back" arggghhh

  10. Have a great time! Oh and fyi you should have rubber banded the outfits together ;-) Enjoy the sleep and kid free time!

  11. Ok, Gymboree outfits are very easy to match up...he just has to look at the "theme" and then put the clothes together. If he can't do it, then I don't even know what to say! Men, they are hopeless!

Have fun in Ohio! My husband is from Ohio and we visit there often, I call it the arm pit of the United States.

  12. Ooooh! Have a wonderful time on your trip - I know you will!!! I agree with the pp - rubber-bands would have been a good plan, but it doesn't really matter. She's cute no matter what she's wearing, neh?

  15. I love that you threw a cheerio at him. So something that I would do. And then I'd blame the kids.

    Enjoy your trip!

  16. My daughter wore pink pants and a yellow shirt yesterday. But in my defense, the yellow shirt had pink on it.

  19. i hope you have a great vacation. Just remember, Tom will appreciate you all that much more after this small trip. Have a guilt free time.

  20. Haha, the image of Tom picking his toe cheese almost made me spit out my drink.

Have a great trip! I don't know about Ohio, but this NC heat is ridiculous - it'll be a big change from Wyoming!!

  21. Does his cellphone have a camera? Maybe you can take shots of all the matching outfits so that way when he ignores them, you'll know he can't claim ignorance. That said, just enjoy yourself! When I get time like that, I don't know what to do first -- try to nap, read the cheesiest magazines, look out the window, order wine... So. Much. Fun. And two days isn't enough time to miss them (much), so you can really concentrate on enjoying yourself. Also: pack good chocolate! You won't have to share.

  22. Have a marvelous time! And don't fret about the kids' outfits. They really aren't that important. Just concentrate on having two days of adult fun with a friend! I'm jealous. I've never had time away. And, like you, I'm the one who always has to stay awake on the plane. And the one who always gets up early to tend to things. Wait a minute...I need a vacation too! LOL

  23. Flying alone is one of my favorite things in the world!

I love my son, but keeping him entertained on a flight, SUCKS!

Thank god for portable dvd players!

I love airports alone too! I love curling up on a chair and watching people! :) I think I would love to be a stewardess...

    For a week! :)

  24. Have a great vacation!

Put the outfits in big ziplocs with coordinating hair accessories then write the date to be worn on them. It works great for dads who are clueless.

  25. Sounds wonderful! I hope you have a wonderful, peaceful 2 days without kids and Tom(and maybe she won't step of the plane win the 4th of July outfit!

  26. Have fun! I love flying, it's so peaceful. As long as you don't have kids and the other people on the plane don't have kids. Haha. So I hope you enjoy yourself without the kids, cuz it won't last long. :)

I am so not a morning person either! I hate getting up anytime before 7:30 am. Kills me to get up earlier than that.

  36. Don't be jealous, but I'm having 5 days out of town w/o kids. Of course, I had to get up at 3 in the morning for our 7:15 flight (airport is 1 1/2 hrs away), but it might just be worth it! Have a BLAST with your friend! That sounds like a fabulous time!

  40. Have fun on your own! The hubby intentionally puts the boys in mismatched outfits just to get a reaction from me when I get home...I always tell him that he's lucky he's cute!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow. You are one trusting soul. May the force be with him. May he stay awake the whole flight. If he doesn't at least you know the kids can't get off the plane, right?

Have a great time with your friend. You are having a mini-vacation before your real vacation. How fun!

  42. Something tells me Natalie will be dressed most oddly... and someone will need a quick visit to a laundry mat...
