New York City Here I Come!

“I’d prefer you stay off the subways. Weird people ride subways. Don’t walk around at night. Weird people are out at night and they’ll abduct you and kill you. Don’t let anyone buy you a drink. Weird people will drug you and kill you. Don’t—”

“Tom. Holy crap. I’ll be fine,” I insisted. I mean, it was flattering he was so concerned. But it was getting borderline annoying. And okay, he was scaring me.

See, I’m going to New York City today with my best friend. It’s a late Mother’s Day gift. Or early birthday gift. I’m there until Thursday. So I’ll probably be missing from my blog. I’m not dead or anything. (I hope.) Just wanted to point that out if you’re like Tom and think New York is crawling with murderers.

Actually, come to think of it, it probably is. I watch Blue Bloods and it’s based in New York and someone is dying every week.

My parents are a tad concerned too. I’m their only kid. They don’t want me walking around at night either. It’s not like I’d wander into an alley and be like, “Oo an actual New York alley!” I’ve seen Home Alone 2. I know what happens in alleys. (Oh wait, the robbers almost shoot Kevin in Central Park at night. Not an alley. Right? Note to self: avoid Central Park at night because didn’t one of the robbers say, “Grown men go into Central Park at night and don’t come out alive..”)

I plan on being safe.

It’s my first time in New York City so I can’t wait. I’ve wanted to go for years. Sex and the City made it look so glamorous. And speaking of Sex and the City, we’re actually going on a Sex and the City tour. They even give you a cosmopolitan to drink. I won’t look as fancy as the Sex and the City ladies though. I plan on wearing flip flops. Or my Sketchers Tone Ups, so my ass firms while I’m exploring the city.

Maybe I’ll run into John Krasinski! He wanders the city.

Only I’m sure Tom would add, “And stay away from John Krasinski,” if I let him know this.

Is it wrong that I can’t wait to dance on the giant piano at FAO Schwartz?

Or sip a hot chocolate at Serendipity 3?

Or…or…stroll down Fifth Avenue and wish I were rich?

Don’t worry though.

I’ll try to do it all during the day.

  2. When I moved out of the house, I almost never talked to my mother. Our lives were both just too busy. She would call once in a blue moon and I finally figured out what the trigger was. It go so that when I heard her voice the first question out of my mouth was, "Where did they find the body this time?"

I'm jealous and I know you'll have an awesome time! Can't wait to read about it!

I hope you took a really comfortable pair of shoes or sneekers! Enjoy the sights, try to get up to the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center), Times Square and most important enjoy it all!

  14. Such an exciting trip! Being from a large metropolitan area in Tx does not prepare us Southerners for New York's atmosphere. My daughter just went to NY had a little panic attack because there were so many buildings/concrete. She wondered how people could live without seeing a substantial number of trees w/large yards.

I think she was ready to run thru the streets in her cowboy boots in search of nature! But, she had fun in New York; it was a different kind of adventure and is sounds like your Sex and the City tour will definitely be a fun tour. Let us know what your personal opinion is on the tone up shoes.

  15. NYC is actually pretty safe given all the people that cram into Manhattan every day. There is so much to see and do there - I'm glad you have several days!

Maybe you will visit a book publisher or two while there...

    Enjoy yourself!!!

  16. Relax- nothing to worry about! I went to grad school in NY for two years, and never once felt unsafe. I took the subway all the time, and actually felt SAFER walking at night than taking the subway, because there are always stores open and tons of people around wherever you go.

Enjoy the cupcakes at the Magnolia Bakery- I'm pretty sure they are on the SATC tour, and if not, then make a point of going there on your own!

Have fun and be sure to post some of the highlights!

  34. Let me save you the disappointment at FAO. It is not like on BIG at all. It is a much smaller version meant for children and there is a line of them waiting to get on. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
