Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Time Changes

“But it’s still light out. It’s not bedtime. You’re tricking me,” Natalie insisted, peeking out the window.

“It’s still light out because of something called Daylight Savings. I assure you, it’s bedtime,” I explained.

Ugh. Curse time changes! Arizona and Hawaii have it right. Why can’t Oklahoma be like Arizona and Hawaii?

“But it’s still light out. It’s NOT bedtime!” Natalie crossed her arms over her chest.

Dammit. I just wanted her to go to bed so I could watch some Army Wives in peace.

“It IS bedtime. Look, I’ll read you another book,” I promised, reaching for her Rapunzel one.

“Rapunzel says it’s not bedtime,” Natalie said.

“Rapunzel, it’s bedtime,” I said to the illustration on the book. I stared at Natalie. “You’ll understand when you’re older. I’m not putting you to bed early. I wouldn’t do that.”

Actually. I have done that. Several times when I have had enough. But what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.

I eventually got Natalie to go to bed. She still was giving me a wary look as I tucked her in.

Then on Monday morning Tommy kept peering out the window and he finally said, “I think we’re up at the wrong time. The sun isn’t where it usually is.”

“Tommy. It’s Daylight Savings. The time change. Remember?” It was too early to argue.

“Are you sure?” Tommy wondered. “What if I get to school and no one is there?”

“They’ll be there.”

“But it’s still really DARK out! Are you SURE this is RIGHT?”

“YES! IT’S RIGHT! YOU KNOW THE RULES! NO ANNOYING MOMMY BEFORE EIGHT!” I screamed.

Not really. I wanted to. Instead I gritted my teeth and promised that it was the right time.

The good news is, Tommy understands the time change now.

Natalie does not. Every night she’s been like, “But it’s still light out. It’s not bedtime..”

So again.

Oklahoma. Why can’t you be like Arizona and Hawaii?

  1. DST is just absurd and needs to be abolished world wide!!! The spring doesn't usually affect me too badly, but the fall jacks up my system for about six weeks! Seriously!

  2. I don't care for the changes either but love the added daylight in the evening. Of course my kids are older and it only affects what time they get dinner - which is timed with the sunset.

  3. I curse the time change. Clearly it was meant to throw people with small children off-kilter.

  4. Bud questioned dinner. He asked if he forgot to eat lunch and was this lunchtime now? He couldn't understand why we were eating dinner in the daylight.

    Thankfully he didn't question bedtime!

  5. I also am not a fan of the time change at all. I had forgotten it was changing this past weekend & so Monday afternoon I am reading stuff on facebook and they are all talking about the time change and I completely freaked because I realized I had not changed any of our clocks & if I was wrong then I was about to miss my son's bus which means a 35 minute ride back to base and a phone call to my husband to pick him up. So I start freaking out, running around getting my other two ready to go and then I did a local time search. Ya we don't change ours until the end of the month for some insane reason. Stupid time changes.

  6. Not a fan either. Whoever decided time change was a good idea obviously doesnt already get up at 5am nor do they have kids. LOL. Our kids have been out of sorts from time change as have I. Ick!

  7. I think the other 48 states need to step it up and drop DST. So confusing and unnecessary!

  8. Hating Time Change!! Bedtime is the biggest headache. Feel your pain sista!

  9. I'm right there with you. I want to punch the guy in the nuts who started this time change thing. It had to be a guy who invented it. No woman in their right mind would come up with something like this!

But then I dont have little kids at home.

  11. DST worked in my favor...now that baby goes to bed at 8 instead of 7 so she actually gets to play with daddy before bed and I get some day time to myself.

    I still hate it though.

What really bugs me is that it's actually Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time. My husband will correct people every.single.time he hears the extra 's'. He does the same thing with Groundhog Day. There are times when being married to a meteorologist really sucks.

  12. My grandkids learned some key numbers early, especially 6:00 and 7:00. The first means stay in bed until you see this on the clock, and the second means when you see this, it's bedtime. Augie was complaining about going to bed with the sun out, but his mom showed him the clock. Not saying it works perfectly; they can always come up with other reasons to not be in bed. :-)

  13. I have been bitching about it ALL week! I LOATHE it! I'm not a morning person anyway and getting up when it's still dark out really pisses me off.

  14. I live in IN and we just adopted DST two (or more?) years ago. I've hated every part of it!

  15. This year for the time change I got super lucky, because me and the boy got really, really sick before the weekend. So we cruised right through the time change without really noticing, because we were laying around being sick anyway. See?? I couldn't have planned that shit better if I'd wanted to!!!

  16. DST is terrible. Just pick a damn time and stick with it!

  17. I also hate the time change - but I was lucky since it didn't change my daughter's schedule at all.

  18. I don't even know ANYONE who doesn't hate the time change.

  19. I don't hate the time change!! I'm weird I guess, but I'm a natural light junkie, so the fact that I don't have to turn on any lights in my house until close to 7p is so awesome to me!!

  20. I told my husband I wasn't changing any of the clocks that I have to manually change as a form of protest against it, but eventually gave in from confusing myself.
I saw this quote on Facebook. "When told the reason for daylight savings time the Old Indian said, 'Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket." Definitely how I feel!

  21. I loathe daylight savings time. It never bothered me until I became a parent, like many things, but now it wrecks us for weeks.

I had an identical bedtime discussion with my oldest yesterday. Describing the time change was one of the more futile conversations I have ever had. :)

    Hope you all adjust quickly!

  22. Ohhh, I hate the time change. I grew up in Indiana and until about 5 years ago they didn't change time (except for about 3 counties). I HATE the time change. Did I mention this?

  23. I remember never understanding time change as a kid. I used to get so irate with my mother because she was sending me to bed when the sun was out and waking me up when the sun was down.
