Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Not Being Able To Say Merry Christmas

“Merry Christmas!” I said this morning to other mothers as I walked Natalie to school.

Yes. I said Merry Christmas. And I’m not going to stop. I’m getting a tad tired of all this PC nonsense. If someone is offended over Merry Christmas then I suggest they need to get a life or reevaluate what is really important to get upset about these days.

I’m not terribly religious but I’m not offended by it. To me the phrase means happy things. Trees. Cookies. Carols.

If someone were to say, “Happy Hannukah” to me I wouldn’t care either.

If someone said, “Happy Kwanzaa!” I’d say, “Thank you!”

I’m annoyed that the “right” thing to say these days is Happy Holidays and that store workers can’t even say Merry Christmas anymore.

I’m going to be a rebel and say Merry Christmas.

So.

Merry Christmas, guys!

(I chuckled when I saw an ornament at Target that said “Happy Whatever Doesn’t Offend You.” Please though. Don’t get offended over a polite greeting. It’s not worth it!)

And one last thing. You can win a copy of my book The Swimmer’s Assistant if you go to one of my favorite websites Chick Lit Is Not Dead. Winner will be chosen December 23rd!

  7. Amen, amen and amen. I also get very tired of all of this. I went to a store yesterday and the lady said Happy Holidays and I then said Merry Christmas and she said Merry Christmas back.

  8. AGREED! I wont and refuse to buy a card that says "happy holidays" it has to say merry christmas. Its getting harder to find those types. 8 years ago I worked at home depot and I actually got in trouble for sayin merry christmas to a customer! Makes to GLAD and happy I work for myself now and I can shout it as loud as I want to who I want MERRY CHRISTMAS ;)

  9. Agreed. I'm not religious, but to me, "Merry Christmas" just relates to the season, the feeling, and the joy. It doesn't mean anything religious. And I'm not easily offended by what others might say to me.

  16. I've never met anyone who finds Merry Christmas offensive, I think it's the PC Brigade worrying that it might be, even though the people they're worried about offending have a bloomin' great Christmas tree in their living room! Merry Christmas!

  19. People wanna get their panties in a twist over just about anything these days. Believe it or not, in every retail store I've been to this holiday (errrr, CHRISTMAS) season, I haven't heard one "happy holidays" greeting. EVERYONE (worker-wise) has said "Merry Christmas" to me. And when I make it out to sound like I've been doing some serious shopping when I talk about "retail stores", I mean that I've been to Target and Walmart and I still feel like that's a pretty big deal.
