Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Waiting For Books

I checked the website and scowled.

Number 88. Really? Who were these 87 people in front of me? I think I needed the book more than they did. My husband is DEPLOYED. Reading is my OUTLET.

“Not fair,” I muttered like my six-year-old and clicked off the site with disgust.

I was checking to see what number I was on the wait list for some books at the local library. The one I checked was for The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. People keep mentioning how good it is so I thought, okay, it’s been out for a bit, the wait shouldn’t be that long.

Wrong.

I’d just BUY the book but I promised Tom I’d cut back. My shelf is STUFFED with books. I have PILES of books. We’re in base housing so we’re running out of room. Then when we move we’re only allowed so much weight and books get heavy when you own like 500+ of them.

And yes, I could buy the book and then sell it, or pass it on, but it pains me to give my books up. I dropped off two large bags of books at the Airman’s Attic once and wanted to cry. I think I frightened the woman when I asked if they’d be well taken care of. She said something like, “They’ll be put on the shelf…??” and then backed away with my beloved books.

So I have to wait. And sometimes the waiting takes forever.

Come on you 87 people. Hurry and read the book.

I am not a patient person when it comes to wanting to read something.

(But I am buying the new Bridget Jones book next month. I did make a promise to Tom, but there are some books I must own. Some women have an obsession with shoes. I have an obsession with books.)

  1. This is EXACTLY the reason I broke down and bought a Kindle. We made too many DITY moves with all my books, and it was awful. I resisted the Kindle for a long time, but now I love. I have more books than ever all in the palm of my hand! :)

  2. I know exactly what you mean about your shelves...I did a book buying fast a couple years ago because it was out of control...that was SO HARD!!-Ashley

  4. This makes me sad because I used to have an obsession with books but I haven't been feeling it lately :( I'll have to add that one to my to-read list though.

  5. I'm the same with books, have too many of them! But then again, can you really ever have too many books?

  6. That is why I have a Kindle attached to Mr. Big's credit card so I can't go crazy buying! LOL He's made sure of that with books and my iTunes - I'm THAT bad...but there is the free book downloads!!

  7. Have you tried PaperBackSwap.com? (that link will give me credit if you sign up)
You list the books you are willing to part with and you get credit anytime you mail a book to someone. Then you can use your credits to get books free from someone else! It's not the greatest for new releases, but it's a great way to clear off some of your shelves and get other books in return. You only pay for shipping when you mail out a book. Otherwise it's free.

  8. I did buy that book awhile ago for my son, because he said he wanted to read that one, and he never wants to read - so I bought it!

I read it too - my son said they are making a movie out of that so I think that's why it is so popular again.

Hope you can get it soon. xoxo

  9. I was just on my library website seeing that I was like 139 in line for Elin Hilderbrand's new one. Boo! I also have to cut back because we have way too many books. Like you, there are some books I have to own. I like collections. I have every Harry Potter book. I have every Shopaholic book.

  11. Oh my gosh, I am seriously the same way with my books! I can't stop buying them, and once they are mine I cannot part with them. Because what if whoever gets them doesn't take care of them and they get ruined? It would be book murder and I do not condone book murdering.

  13. I have both a shoe AND a book obsession. According to my Hubby, they will both bankrupt us someday in the near future.

  14. I have the same problem. However, I have finally converted to a Kindle. It pained my greatly to give up that beautiful smell of ink and paper. But for the sake of my poor boyfriend's back when we move next summer I have finally joined the eReader community.

  15. Our shelves are overflowing too. I end up in then long wait line for books at the library instead of buying new ones. It is like a surprise gift when I finally get the notice that it is mine turn to check it out.

  16. I used to be the same way!!! I'd have to decide which "babies" to keep and which to sell/give away. So sad and rather traumatic if you really want to know the truth!

Until I discovered the Kindle! Now I only buy electronic books and never, ever have to get rid of books again. Best thing I ever got, and now I have the newest Kindle Fire and I named it my Precious, lol!

Yes 'real' books are nice to have and hold, but given our lifestyle, I'll take the electronic version and save the space and weight!

  17. Amber... I know you want real books to hold in your hand to smell, to feel, to read... something tangible. I used to be like you. I was so strongly like that. I refused to even entertain the thought of an e-reader. Nope. No way. No how. Must have book solid in my hand. My sister even got me the nook for Christmas one year. It is piling dust on my closet shelf, even at this moment.

    But.

I was forced to find a way to entertain myself at work. I have nothing to do, yet I must look busy. Then I found, miraculously, this "Kindle for PC". You don't even need to own a kindle to use that program. So I surreptitiously downloaded it to my computer at work. I didn't think I'd stick with it and could just uninstall it if I had to. No biggie. I read a book then two. Now this is like 200 books ago. I can't believe how much I use it. And if the story is specially good, the book is also sync'd to my iphone... don't even need a kindle for it. I can go home and continue the book from my couch. I love it. I have to say, it is better than I thought.

I still haven't touched my nook though. I would prefer to buy books from Amazon. And you can't use the nook for that. But if you HAD to consider an ereader, try out the kindle for pc or kindle or iphone (both are free. Its been a year I've been using those and I don't see myself stopping. AND you know what else? No wait. Some books are free, some books are 2.99, some books you can borrow like a library, trade, buy, whatever. And it doesn't take up any shelf space in your home.

  18. IT is really good. They're making it into a movie, so I think that adds to the wait list.

I cannot believe I feel like this, but I'm a total kindle addict at this point.
