5 Ways To Piss Me Off On An Airplane

I'm not a fan of flying because I've watched too many episodes of Lost. But sometimes I have to do it, like when we go on vacations or when we're visiting family members. I'd rather endure an airplane than drive for hours on end.

Still, even though it's quicker, riding on an airplane isn't always the easiest thing to do. Here are ways to piss me (and others, I imagine) while on an airplane.

1. Lean your seat all the way back.

At least PAY ME before you rest your head in my lap. I totally get that you paid for your seat and therefore can do what you wish with it, but common decency should not be thrown out the window. If you do go all the way back, expect me to move around frantically, because I'll start to feel trapped, and if I happen to hit the back of your seat, well, move it up.

2. Talk to me when I'm trying to read.

If I have my book open, I'm done conversing. I always seem to get the person who wants to chat the entire way near me.

3. Say, "Sorry, we're out of Diet Coke. Can I get you a real Coke?"

No. No you cannot.

4. Allow your kid to continuously kick the back of my seat. I get if it happens occasionally--I have kids too. But I once had a boy kick my seat every couple of minutes.

I had to turn around and ask him to stop. I have my limits. I'm surprised the mother didn't write a blog post entitled To The Woman Who Told My Son To Stop Kicking Her Seat and tell a sob story on how he battled and won a mysterious illness not once, but twice.

6. Say casually, "Oh, we're all going to die," when there is turbulence. You have people who don't like to fly (ME!) on the flight who will panic and take you seriously.

What are your flying pet peeves?

  1. I can't stand the seat leaner and the forever talking neighbor..

  2. Getting out a book is normally a good way to take a break from conversations though not everyone gets the hint!

  3. Hahaha I have a draft coming on my worst flight ever.
It was all this and so so much more.
    Death would have been preferable!
Airplanes blowwwww. They are liking flying bus rides. And by bus I mean the city ghetto kind.

  4. You know what grinds my gears? People who REFUSE to gate check their oversized carry-on and then proceed to spend 5 minutes punching it into the overhead bin. These people are why I check all of my bags - I have no desire to be THAT person! :)

  5. On our last flight a couple weeks ago, a kid was kicking my seat... I was finally so fed up and irritated that when I came back from the restroom, my husband had traded seats with me... all was good for a few minutes... until the mom traded seats with her kid and he started kicking me again! I don't think I have ever glared so hard.

  6. LOST ruined flying for me because now, whenever there's turbulence, I imagine landing on some island with black smoke and wild hogs and all that and worry how I would survive.

The seat kickers are the worst. I'm okay with a leaner because if it's too far back, I shove my knees into the back of the seat until they're so uncomfortable they move up a bit. I'm short so I don't need much in the way of leg room but still. Have some courtesy.

  7. good luck! i agree with everything you said.

  8. The seat leaning back annoys me! So do people who talk to me while I read- though that's not just on planes.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I wish the book thing worked at home too! Do you see me reading? Get your own snack!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have no desire to talk when I'm on an airplane!

  11. All of this .. or when someone wakes me up when I finally fall asleep. Ugh

    ReplyDelete
  12. Good luck! Although the idea of flying alone seems like a dream to me. I used to do it often and now it's all about if Des will or will not screech.

    ReplyDelete
  13. :) Best of luck! I'm not big on the whole flying on a plane thing. It's been a few years...

  14. Oh my goodness, I've had every one of these things happen to me. I had the kid kicking the back of my seat every few minutes thing happen on a 13 hour flight. And I was a teenager. And super non confrontational. So I just let it happen. Ugh. Oh, and the book thing... YES! Couldn't agree more.

  15. It has been 10 years since I have flown anywhere. I fear my kids would make less than satisfactory flying companions for many of the reasons you have here.

  16. LMAO Agreed on all points!! I have a 24 hour flight to look forward to in a couple months time, if there is a kid kicking my seat the whole way, I may or may not commit murder!!

  17. Dude I once took a standby military flight home from Germany while the husband was downrange in the middle of a 15 month deployment. Can I please tell you, as I'm sure you know, the military is the most unorganized group of people in the entire world. I had no idea when we'd be leaving, whether or not my kid would need to be strapped into a jump seat or a regular airplane seat, and which town we'd land in. Did I mention I had to organize some sort of connection to get me from the east coast to Chicago? That, my friend, was one experience I will never do again. Flight annoyance maxed out.

  18. The seat reclined all the way are just rude, same with kicking the back of the chair. Hope your flight was good.

  19. Never been on a plane but have been on a bus and when I put my seat back I felt knees in the back. Mind you, he had both seats to himself so I have no idea what his problem was.

  20. When I flew one time with my baby in a carseat, the guy in front of him leaned his seat all the way back and my baby had NO room. It made me so angry, I honestly wanted to punch him in his face. The stewardess and the lady sitting next to me asked him to sit up and he still wouldn't. So frustrating!

  22. Lol! "Are we going to die?" I find that hilarious. What I hate and experienced out of all you listed is someone leaning their seat way back.

  23. I, like most people, can relate to the things you listed here. But is it bad that when I read, "What are your flying pet peeves?" my first thought was, "Not being able to fly often enough?"

Then again, I've only done it twice - I have a horrible wanderlust, but haven't had much opportunity to travel just yet in my life. I'm hoping someday soon that will change, but we'll see. In the meantime - may all your flights be chill. And comfy.

    And also smooth.

  24. OMG, this list! I understand that kids will be kids. However, there is a thin line between just being rude. Thankfully, I haven't dealt with a kid kicking my seat. I never want to even imagine that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Number 1 and number 4 gets me so much. *triggered*
Additional: Children climbing over you to look out the window

    ReplyDelete
  26. Haha I completely agree with all of these! Another one I hate is when there is a spare seat between you and another person (very rare and VERY lucky) and they decide to put their feet up so their toes are tickling your leg. Yes this is a true story, and yes this happened to me haha.

  27. My flying pet peeves have more to do with the service from the airlines. Like I want help with my luggage when I'm alone with five bags and two kids. Or not be charged full price for the three year old who can't fly without me anyway, forcing me to pay double to fly to see grandma.

    ReplyDelete
  28. For me it has to be people who don't shower or have over endulged on deodorant. I can't stand weird smells on the plane and people kicking my seat is a no no

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lol! I've actually never flown so I can't say i know what you're talking about but it seems like everything on this list would be quite irritating (:

    ReplyDelete
  30. Haha! This is great! I'm with you on the reading. I usually pack a book that I'm really looking forward to, so don't ruin it for me!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ohhh flying! I use to get quite nervous about it, but now I'm much better. My main pet hate is number one, especially when it is a short flight! hehe, thanks for sharing, I love reading your posts.

  32. Ahahah seriously, these are things that bother me too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. LOL. yeah I know what you mean.... The worst part for me are not always children. It's when somebody in your surrounding has a strong body odour and you have to endure it for 6 hours straight. I enjoyed your read! :D

    ReplyDelete
  34. One of my pet peeves is when people are still using their tech devices when they very clearly told us to put it away. Or when people are just wrapping up their phone calls as we're taking off. THE PILOT SAID TURN IT OFF!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am a nervous flyer myself. The worst thing for me are the children who scream but their parents don't do anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Traveling period is stressful. I think airlines should take some of the responsibility though for the tight spaces. It wasn't always like that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Outburst!!! I absolutely am frightened by it. But sometimes I have to. I would rather drive. But I think someone with flu like symptoms sneezing and coughing all over me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My pet peeve is when at night time the pilot does not say we are landing soon and lands with no warning. The first time this happened I though the plane was crashing

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have honestly only been on one plane, and it was a 2 hour flight. I slept the whole time but I am pretty sure all of these things would piss me off as well.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree in everything you stated especially allowing their kid to continuously kick the back of my seat. Don't they have plan to restrain their children and teach good manners?

    ReplyDelete
  41. i hate when people sleep on my shoulder and also when when someone kicks my seat.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh yeah. The person in front of me who reclines the seat as far back as it goes. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Haha that was a fun read! My biggest pet peeve are SMALL PLANES! It is bad enough to have to fly but getting on one of those puddle jumpers is the WORST!
Oh and not having any food when they say they will!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I always get the person ho wants to chat too! I prefer to zone out so I put my headphones in, even if there's no music playing!

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is my life. I remembered when I use to fly a lot I always get in front of person who doesn't know how to respect other people privacy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Those are some good ones. They tick me off, too! Or having to sit the whole flight beside someone that is smelly. lol

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anyone who tells me casually we are all going to die on an airplane may have a problem surviving the rest of the trip. Unless he wants to be tied up and then maybe they wouldn't have a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Don't tell me you don't have wine because the plane just left the Middle East. You better find some.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I hate all those too! I'm glad I didn't experience any, yet.

    ReplyDelete
  50. ha ha.. most of these look annoying. Yeah kicking the seat is so irritating.

  51. Oh man, the seat leaners. Even if I would love to lean my seat back, I don't do it out of respect for the person behind me. There's minimal leg room to begin with so why make it worse and I surely don't want you laying in my lap.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I went to New York for 21th birthday and on our way back we had this ANNOYING lady literately screaming 'we all going to die' when we had a bit of turbulence. Now this was the first time my husband (who at the time was my boyfriend)had ever been on a plane! The poor guy was so ill with worried and stressed the whole journey back he couldn't relaxed. I really wanted to give that lady a piece of my mind!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh my god, yes! To all of them! Especially the kid thing! Seriously, I am a parent. I get kids, but at some point, you need to tell them to stop!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Dang, these piss me off too. People can be insensitive while trying to make themselves feel comfortable during thr flight.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Same sentiments, but also applicable when in a long bus ride. I also had a kid kick my seat repeatedly. I looked at the kid and then the parent because I was already getting pissed off.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I went on vacations a couple of month ago and I remember I was preparing Elias giving him instructions on how we should sit, what we should do, etc, etc. He behave really well, I was surprised, not to mention I had a carry on filled with snacks, coloring books, tablet and toys!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hate it when people lean their seats all the way back. It's so irritating. Especially when my flight is early at morning or late at night and I'm feeling damn sleepy.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Planes can be very fun or very irritating. I have been through both kinds of trips. Another thing that is annoying is food smells!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'll tell you what, there are those special people who can make or break a flying experience, aren't there?!

    ReplyDelete
  60. All of these except the coke one .I don't drink it anymore diet or otherwise. A super fun read as always .

    ReplyDelete
  61. Traveling is as stressful as it is, what more if you add these elements to the game! I really hate when I experience some of these during a trip! It kicks the excitement out.

    ReplyDelete
  62. These are all so true! Sometimes you just want to sit there with a good book and escape a little bit.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hahaha! I keep on laughing on your list. Well, I guess even if you love flying on an airplane, those random acts would really piss you off. All of this happens most of the time. - Anosa
