Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Do People Not Get What Single File Means Anymore?

In the morning after I drop Natalie off at school, I usually walk home. By the time I'm walking back, the Youth Center kids are coming out, and the group is scattered in clumps. This means I have to walk in the grass. It's not a big deal, but if it's wet, I don't want to be in the grass. So sometimes I'll go, "Single file, kids. Single file," and I'm met with a look like this:

Does no one understand what single file means anymore?

It's this:

People get into a line on both sides of the sidewalk, so no one has to walk in the grass. I've had to walk in the grass thanks to large families who don't understand what single file means. Even adults don't like to get into a line so the person on the other side can pass comfortably on the sidewalk.

Sometimes when I'm jogging, there's a clump of Moms and strollers on the trail. One would think they'd move into a single file--and most of the time they do--but sometimes they remain in the clump so I get to, you guess it, run into the grass. And when you're running in the grass, sometimes there are sticks and rocks and I'd rather not go flat on my face.

So remember these two words: SINGLE. FILE. Teach your kids what it means.

No one should have to end up in the grass.

  1. Oh my goodness, yes! I do this at the grocery store with my kids. If we're in an aisle alone, by all means, they can be on either side of me, but when we come upon other people who want to pass us, I'm constantly telling them to either get in front of me or behind me because we can't go through three people wide. I often say this loudly enough so that OTHER people hear it, hoping it will sink in that I'm talking to them too. I cannot understand why people don't/won't make room for others to pass comfortably.

  2. Ugh I can't stand when people don't get into single file and try to force others off the sidewalk! HOW RUDE!

  4. I remember my days working as a librarian in schools. We would have fire alarms and kids were supposed to leave in single file line. They gave me the same looks when I tried to remind them. Funny post. :)

  6. So true. And rude. I thought they were still teaching kids single file? Scarlet seems to know it, at least. She's got your back.

  7. This is one of my biggest pet peeves! Especially when people make eye contact with you, acknowledging your presence, and STILL do not move over. What on earth?!

  9. People are just rude! They'd rather you walk or run in the grass then move over. This made me laugh, because I have so been there. Especially when I go out and run!

  10. My favorite is when I'm at the mall during Christmas (or even not) and people are walking 5 wide with their double strollers legit taking up the ENTIRE aisle and when you say excuse me and try to pass they give you the a look of "how dare you pass me". I'm all "Don't be a dick!"

  11. You ought to try driving in the Santa Cruz, Capitola, Soquel area of California. The roads have bicycle lanes, wide enough for bikes to ride single file yet they ride 2 or 3 across and get made at you when you don't go around them into oncoming traffic. Makes me want to play bowling for bikes!

  12. Not sure what's happening with the human population, but all their manners, etc are flying out the window...! Next time, just push them out of your way...;)
