We're PCSing But We Don't Have A House Yet

"Where are we moving?"

"Are we going to be staying in on base housing?"

"Do we have to go off base?"

"Where are we moving?"

Tommy asks these questions. Often. And I wish I had answers for him. But I don't.

Here's the situation: we're moving (PCSing) to Lackland AFB. We want to stay on base. We like being on base. I know many people don't, but we do. It's all my kids know.

They have homes that look basically the same as the one we're in now.

This would be perfect because it would be less change for Tommy. Sometimes too many changes can be overwhelming to him because he has autism. He'll go into meltdown mode, and I do not want that.

Unfortunately, we were offered an older style house that is 300 sq ft less than what we're in now. At this point in my husband's career, we cannot have less space. Our current home is 1600 sq ft and the homes that look the same as ours at Lackland are obviously the same size. We've been in this current home for almost 5 years. Before that we were in a home for about the same length. It wasn't exactly the same style, but close, with the same space. If we moved into a smaller home, we'd be on top of each other. This could also trigger Tommy's emotions.

Of course we requested a home in the neighborhood that looks like ours. But we were told they cannot guarantee a house in that neighborhood. They have to go down a list. We already turned one house down. If we turn the next house down, we'll be off the waiting list. We have not been offered a second house yet. I hope soon, so I can have answers for Tommy. If the second house won't work for us, we'll be going off base, because it's all we can do.

I admit, I'm stressed. I don't know what'll happen. To top it off, they don't have room for us at the hotel on base. (Called TLF..temporary living facility.) So when we get to Lackland, we have to stay off base. We don't even know long we'll be in the hotel because we don't know where we'll be living.

Moves are stressful. I'll be eating a lot of things like this:

I hope we get some answers soon.

  2. Oh those Betty Crocker sweet rewards! I could use one right now. Homes are pains. We have already had the plumber over, and the heating/cooling guy and it's not even 11:00am.
Wishing you a great solution and SOON.

  3. Moving is a pain in the butt anyway. I can't imagine having military restrictions on top of that!

  4. Good luck and hope everything will work out in the end. I'm dealing with Bar Mitzvah scheduling angst which does affect my son because he has hearing loss and does not go to the Jewish Day Schools and can't be as flexible as other people might be able to. He's been practicing his Torah portion for a while now and can't just switch weeks like that. I'm just a bit frustrated at the moment. Thanks for letting me vent.

  8. OMG< I don't now how you do it. That would drive me crazy, and I think you are doing really well if it only drives you to chocolate. I would be reaching for the wine!

  11. This is an example of how military spouses sacrifice and serve our country. Thank you, and I hope you get (the right) answers very soon.

  12. Ugh, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time getting a house on base. I know how stressful it is, but add two older kids into the mix (as opposed to my baby who had no idea what was going on), and I can't even imagine. Good luck!!
