When Your Moving Truck Shows Up Seven Hours Late...

Our stuff is here!

But we had issues getting it. I tell you, we've had a rough couple of days.

We were told to be ready for our stuff at 8 AM since we had a large truck. We woke up early and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

By 10, we called the moving company number, Rockey's Moving and Storage. We were told that the driver slept in.

Um. Not professional. The lady apologized and said he was on his way.

We waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Around noon the truck driver called and said he was having issues with his truck and he was just going to come out tomorrow. All casual like.

My suspicions piqued immediately and I figured this is what happened: the guy slept in. Saw that we had a lot of goods. (We had like 10,000 pounds. I'm a pack rat. But that's an entirely different blog post.) Decided he'll come out another day because he is not in the mood to adult.

He called Tom, and Tom can be more easygoing than I am. It looked like Tom was going to tell the guy it was okay. I was in front of him doing this:

And saying things like, "Absolutely not, he screwed up, he's coming today." I punctuated all of this by stabbing my finger into the air.

Since he didn't want an angry wife on his hands, Tom said that we needed our items immediately as promised. Really, we DID need our items on Monday. This is because Tuesday we were running around getting errands done and Wednesday he started his MTI school where he would have absolutely no free time.

The driver wasn't pleased, but oh well.

So we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

An hour goes by. I call the moving company again. They informed me that the truck WASN'T having issues. The dude just ran out of gas.

We were promised he'd be at the house in a half hour.

Ha.

Another hour went by. And I forgot to mention that there were two workers WAITING at the house for the truck driver. They were there to help unload everything. So these guys are also upset because they want to be sure they'll be paid by their company.

There was so much back and forth. We kept being told the driver was "on his way" when he really wasn't. I made so many calls to the company. I think they were tired of hearing from me. But really, when you say to be somewhere at 8 and the driver doesn't show? And then says he slept in? And then tries to CHANGE the date?

The woman I kept talking with on the phone was even like, "Yeah, the driver tried to change your date but I told him it wasn't happening."

FINALLY around 330 the truck showed up. And the guys on it were polite, don't get me wrong, but leading up to it was incredibly unprofessional. I also thought it tacky when the guy was like, "We accept gratuity.." We never give cash to movers. The people on base actually say NOT to. We do, however, supply drinks and food. I've never been told by a mover that they "accept gratuity" like that so it was a bit odd. Plus, the guy who told us that was the driver who tried to change the date on us. He must've been dropped as a baby multiple times to assume he'd be getting any sort of cash from us.

Anyhow, they finished around 700. Way later than they were supposed to.

My husband filled out an honest review afterwards. Since these companies are used by the military, they can actually be dropped if there are so many complaints. Again, this was Rockey's Moving and Storage and after doing research afterwards, they are known to be unprofessional. I hope the military considers not renewing their contract with them because I have never experienced such utter nonsense with any other company.

Have you ever dealt with a crazy move?

  1. omg i would have been livid. Also the fact that he hinted at gratuity?! I would've said "oh that's nice" and walked away. I fortunately have not had any crazy moves like that because we always move ourselves. The only issue i have is i like to have everything started bright and early and it drives me nuts when my family sits around instead of getting it done. Im spoiled like that :).

  2. Oh yeah! Hahahaha. All these movers now tell you "we accept tips." I'm so glad our move is over. It was awful....and we get to do it again soon!
PS I always manage to stick my hand in a box and cut myself. Last move? Stuck hand in box with Japanese samurai sharp food processor knives. This move? Stuck hand in box with broken vase. I'm going to lose a hand eventually.

  3. Ugh!!! There is nothing worse than waiting for your stuff after not having it for a while.

  4. Oh my gosh! What a crazy story. I'm glad you stood up for yourselves and didn't let them get away with their BS. It's hard sometimes but I'm glad you did. Also, that was super weird of the guy to say that they accept cash tips. I never give cash tips but I get breakfast/coffee in the morning and then ask them if they want lunch.

We had an insane PCS horror story when we PCSed from Hawaii to Connecticut. Basically, our movers in Hawaii left our stuff out in the rain and then everything was moldy by the time it got to Connecticut. We had to throw away about 80% of everything we own and are still fighting over our claim. Craziness -- this is why I agree you should always fill out those reviews honestly so that the military can drop movers who are not doing the right thing.

  5. Oh gosh, what a mess! I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I'm glad your husband will be filling out a review - they definitely deserve it!!

  6. Ugh! What a mess! We don't plan on hiring movers, but that means I can't yell at my family and friends when they don't do what I ask. I guess there's a trade off to saving money!

  7. Holy cow! They would have lost my "gratuity" immediately. Wow.

  8. I would have been so pissed!!! Wow. When we moved to NJ, the truck was too tall to get on our driveway, as I think it would have hit some wires. So they had to transfer everything into smaller trucks and come back a different day. They also broke some things and then denied it. The only time we had good movers was for our move to MD. We had a company from Passaic that did interstate moves. They were great and even beat us to our new house!
Definitely ballsy to ask for gratuity. Wow.

  9. On our last move, the guys reeked of cigarettes and kept taking turns to go out and smoke. I'm paying by the hour so that didn't go over well with me. They also wanted a gratuity and I'm thinking "I'm already paying y'all $2k. Nope, not happening."

  10. We had a small driveway as well so they had to transfer to a smaller truck. They ended up being two hours late with the first delivery. After 2 hours unloading they left to get the second load it took them 4 hours to come back. All while my husband was gone and with a one year old.

  11. Omg, I can't believe he had the nerve to ask for a tip! Did he even apologize for being so efn late? Glad you guys got your stuff in the end...

  12. There's no way I could have been the one to keep calling the company. My temper would have been too off the charts to be civil. I can't believe the driver was actually shameless enough to try to get a tip. Have you had movers accept food? I've only ever had them accept drinks, and that's only when I've insisted several times that they help themselves.

  13. We just moved this past week and last Thursday we were to be loaded. We got to the house by 8a and at 8:30a the company called and said "we're overbooked so we are going to loaf you on Saturday". Ummm, what? No you're not. I spent (my husband is way to easy-going) the next 8 hours on the phone. I kept my cool until about 2:30p and then they realized I wasn't accepting their Saturday time frame. They finally agreed to load us the next day. We were never so happy to see a truck the next morning! Our load did not go well and we're not hopeful that our stuff will arrive on one piece, but that's a story for another day.

    2. It was National Carriers and they were fine in Oklahoma. When we got to Texas they also use Rocky's as part of their contract I suppose. So avoid Rocky's. I've heard other people have had issues with them too.

  14. I'm dealing with a crazy situation right now! My hhg were packed last Thursday and were supposed to be loaded yesterday between 8-5. I received an email at noon asking how it was going. No one had shown up yet! I returned the email but got an auto reply that the person was away from her desk for the day. So I called, sat on hold for 45 minutes before giving up. around 4 I called again, spent another half hour on hold, got passed to 3 different people, then finally told the movers were still coming. They never showed up!!! This morning I've already called twice, sat on hold, been told they'll be here 20 minutes ago, and told they're just prepping the truck and they'll call when they're 30 minutes out.
I'm not even sure how to handle this! I wasted an entire day, money for babysitting for my 4 kids, and money on food for the movers. I will not be buying more food for today and I'm not paying a babysitter for another day. I'm just beyond frustrated!

    1. Oh no, I'm so sorry! Make sure you let TMO know. Keep calling numbers. That's what I had to do. I had like 3 different numbers and I kept calling all 3. I think they were tired of hearing from me, but I do not care. I hope it works out. Let me know!

  15. I read this article with horror on my face. I can not believe that people are so bad to their work. This error is inexcusable for such a company. I recently moved into a new house, called these guys https://movers.best/. They were late for 30 minutes, then apologized for it and made us a discount for that. Here is a high level of responsibility, with such people very pleasant to deal with.

  16. Moving sucks. Everything about it sucks. I moved 3 1/2 years ago and I still have boxes. I'm cleaning out my mom's house. It sucks. Movers suck...Oh did I say that already. I would have turned the water hose on them after the truck was unloaded and said, here's a tip. Next time be on time. I'm in a mood today. Can you tell?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow, what an awful experience! Good for you to keep on them and get the job done that day. I hope the military ended up finding other movers to work with.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Unbelievable. You handled this much better than I ever could. It would be funny if it wasn't true.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would never trust anyone else to move my belongings. I can't imagine how frustrating this was for you and your family

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh my, I would have been going crazy. You handled this very well, I can't imagine waiting that long. I hate moving, I told my husband I don't want to move ever again because everything about it is just fun. Matter of fact it's stressful, and tiring.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow, what a pain in the behind. Sitting around all day because they kept saying soon. I have only been moved once. The rest I always moved myself.

  22. There is nothing worse than someone messing with your timetable, especially during a move. At least they showed up!

  24. I definitely would not have tipped them - I don't tip people who get paid a regular salary, though. What a mess, huh?

  25. This story is unacceptable on so many levels. I hope you also reported this company to the Better Business Bureau! Did you get some sort of refund? I would not have been as graceful as you and your husband- my New Yawka self would have been all over this... (And thank you and your family for your service!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh boy, what a nightmare that must have been for you! Crikey, I hope you got some sort of compensation, that's just unacceptable service.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The gifs in the post totally made me chuckle out loud. What a nightmare and how casual for him to say Ill come tomorrow. Like moving isn't stressful enough.

  28. I've had some crazy moves in my life but nothing as bad as this! I can't believe how unprofessional these people were! I've never actually hired movers because I barely own anything and I have two brothers who always help me but I will definitely read reviews really carefully if I ever hire them in the future. Thanks for the warning!

    ReplyDelete
  29. We've been fortunate with moves. However, I've had similar experiences with home repairs. We've waiting all day and had people not show up and not call. Asking for a tip is extremely tacky, in my opinion. I've never experienced that one, so far.

    ReplyDelete
  30. No ma'am. I would NOT of handled this well. Completely unacceptable. A service was to be provided. You kept your cool a lot longer that I would have!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would of been so angry! I'm sorry that happened to you!
When I move next I pray that doesn't happen to me or my anxiety well flare and I'll be so mad lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. Omg that really sucks!!!! I hate waiting!!!! Nothing worse than waiting forever or just as worse, when something/someone shows up too early and you aren't ready for them yet!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think I would have flew off at the mouth. I grew up Military. My father served 22 years. I understand the moving frustrations all to well.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh my gosh, I would have GONE. OFF. And to have the guy basically ask me for a tip? Uh, no way, dude. You want a tip? Here's a tip: Show up on time.

Mama ain't got time for all that jazz.

    ReplyDelete
  35. WOW! Just WOW! Why can't people just DO their jobs??? I would be afraid after all that - that they would intentionally break some of your stuff! Did you have to PAY them after all this? I would have INSISTED on a half price discount at least.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That was so disgusting! I never wanna encounter such inefficient company, or else. lol

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am 100% rolling my eyes with you over this. I've moved many times throughout my life and we've ALWAYS had issues with the moving company! Whether it be boxes being put on the wrong truck, items being stolen, the grand piano breaking, or a beat up dining room table...it's always a disaster!

    ReplyDelete
  38. How incredibly unprofessional! I can't imagine how frustrated everyone there must've been. Luckily I haven't had any inconveniences while moving though, but that seems super frustrating

    ReplyDelete
  39. We have never hired movers but I would not have been happy with this service! Extremely unprofessional! Good thing is now you know whom not to call (trying to find the positive)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh boy! I can totally understand your frustration as I also went to similar situation before. I don't understand why these companies are so unprofessional!

    ReplyDelete
  41. When I was reading your story, I clearly remember my carpet installers! I got the same run around, their story was that they were getting tires for their truck. They never showed up! Well, I fired them and my contractor wasn't too happy since I think he had partially paid them! Oops! Btw, I love your writing!

    ReplyDelete
  42. What?!?!?!?! 7 hours? That is insane. Moving is ALWAYS a trip. Always.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I know this is not supposed to be funny. But I can just imagine you in the back ground motioning with a "not today" attitude. Great job. It is actually a comedy. Well in the future it will be funny. It is very well written.

    ReplyDelete
  44. WOOW, I applaud that driver's confidence! How can you be so unprofessional, I wonder. If he hates his job so much he can just quit and find a new one. This will definitely not sit well with me either, I would have gone all out on them.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why are they so unprofessional? and asking for gratuity pay for that service? they are crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. That must be such a horrible experience. I always try to read reviews before getting services like this. It is good you have that option to write one. One think I like about living in South America is that you can order those services and they can come right away and if they are late you just pay less.

  53. This is so annoying to have to deal with. The company is not only unprofessional, they also lack sympathy. I mean who would like to no not get their stuff right away especially if you're in a new house and a new neighborhood. I'm sorry that you had to experience this!

  54. Hilarious story, you poor thing. Yes I guess this is not that unusual.. We recently had a broken car that we needed to be picked up and brought in to have it repaired. When the guy picking up the car finally arrived (a day too late) and brought it to the repair shop they didn't have a clue what this job was about. Apparently the insurance company organising it had messed up a few things.. Trying to get the person in charge on the phone proved to be a two hour long effort!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh I would have been so upset! Luckily when we moved everything went as planned, but I bet that just threw everything off and made the day sucky.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't know about you, but I would've definitely reported it after an hour. So much time lost. We're gearing up for a move ourselves. I hope this doesn't happen to us.

  57. I have never had to deal with a professional moving service before but I know if I was in your situation I would not have been pleased at all. It is great that we can review companies after the experience so that others ca be aware of the reputation beforehand.
