6 Things That Can Happen When You PCS

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of CORT for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Since my husband is in the Air Force, we PCS a lot. PCS, for those who aren't familiar with the term, stands for permanent change of station. It basically means moving.

So far, we've lived at the following:

Offutt AFB, Nebraska

RAF Lakenheath, England

FE Warren, Wyoming

Tinker AFB, Oklahoma

And most recently we moved to Joint Base San Antonio in Texas.

We've had all sorts of moves: some went smooth, others were a bit crazy.

Here are some things that can happen during a PCS:

1. You realize things are broken when you unpack them. It's a bummer when you find glass smashed in your curio cabinet or a drawer that has been snapped.

2. You're surrounded by boxes and wonder how you accumulated all this stuff.

3. You find that the movers packed your trash and your new home now reeks of old cheese.

4. You're missing a key piece to put together a bed. It's nowhere to be found. This means you have to go to Lowe's and get something that sort of works, but not really, so the bed sort of leans weird.

5. You realize some of your belongings have been stolen. It feels like a kick in the gut, especially if it meant a lot to you.

6. The movers might be all, "Ha, sorry, cannot deliver you items until a month later. Have a great day!"

When this happens, I'm grateful that companies like CORT Furniture Rental exist. CORT is a place where you can rent furniture for all the rooms in your house. They have all sorts of gorgeous choices. I especially loved the Chartres with Campton living room:

The Oakbrook Rectangular Dining Room was lovely too:

And great news! Military members have packages starting at $139 a month. So if you have a home but the movers won't deliver for a while, no problem! You can remain there and have quality furniture. Or you might decide to start all over, sell your old furniture, and rent all new furniture to go with your new home.

Have you ever gone through a crazy PCS where everything seemed to go wrong?

  1. Woah woah woah- movers stole MILITARY PEOPLE'S STUFF!? That's insane, a) because it's just wrong b) If you're going to steal WHY would you take from someone who is TRAINED to ELIMINATE you? I'm sorry- moving is crazy, I can't imagine doing it multiple times.

  2. Omg movers broke so much shit when we moved. Yet again, I stuck my hand in a box of broken glass. Wear gloves when unpacking! I've moved myself more times than I can count tho and I consider myself a badass unpacker. I get my house done in 48 hours lol.

  3. I had to laugh at "you're missing a key piece to put together your bed," because that's exactly what happened to us. Our movers lost a piece of hardware for our bed, so for 2 years, we held our bed together with a bungee cord. It worked! And then on our next PCS, the movers ruined basically everything we owned - they left it all out in the rain in Hawaii and then all of our crates gold moldy. We had to throw away all of our furniture and all of our electronics and other random things. Luckily it's just stuff but it was an ordeal to deal with.

  4. YES to #2!!! I am always shocked at how much stuff we accumulate, it's crazy! We always try to purge before we move but somehow we still end up with crap we don't need haha.

  5. I HATE moving, lol -- I am constantly feeling #2 when we move -- how in the WORLD do we have all this stuff and more importantly, why did we ever think we needed it??

I've never been through a PCS, but I have been through moves in which things went wrong!

  7. It's always upsetting to move then unpack and discover things got broken... or stolen. Ugh.

  8. ARgh, moving sucks. It's stressful enough as it is but then to have stuff broken AND stolen?? Just no. ARgh. We totally had rented furniture when we moved to Brussels!

  9. Oh man, if I were you two, I would never buy a place, and I would literally just live out of a suitcase - I would have like 4 outfits TOTAL and have like one pan, one knife and two plates and sets of forks and knives - ha! THAT IS IT.

  10. Agh! I am currently living this and it is no picnic. I can particularly relate to the sentiment of wondering how the heck I accumulated so much crap!!

  11. Number 4! That one is the worst! This last move we could not find the bolts that held the crib together... so it just sat there for a very long time until my dad went and got the parts needed. Haha.
