Selfless.
This is how I describe veterans. I’m always amazed at the people who volunteer to serve their country, even if it means they’ll lose their life.
There are many veterans in my family and I’m thankful for them. Many are not here with us, but I tell my kids all about them.
I tell my kids about my grandpa. He was in the Air Force and fought in World War II and Vietnam. I have wonderful memories with him.
I never met my mother’s biological father. He also fought in World War II and was a test pilot. He died when one of the planes crashed. My kids say he is brave, and they're right. I wish I could have met him. I'm sure he had lots of stories.
My father, who is still alive, also served. This was when the draft was still around. My kids are amazed that there was a time when people had to go into the military.
And of course, there is my mother, who I’m always proud of. She retired as a Colonel and was the Commander of various squadrons. I know it wasn’t easy for her. Back then, there were a lot of sexist remarks made and not much done about them, but she never let it get her down. My kids know that she was the boss of many people.
With DAV’s Thank a Vet tool, you can actually make a video thanking an important veteran in your life. DAV stands for Disabled Veterans America, and it is a non-profit charity. They provide support for our veterans by giving them rides to medical appointments, and to help them out with their benefit claims. They also help veterans find jobs. It's such a wonderful organization and I'm glad there are places helping our veterans. After all, if it weren’t for our veterans, we wouldn’t have the freedoms that we have today. If it weren’t for the selfless men and women fighting for their country, America might not be what it is today. It is an easy thing to do for the veteran in your life. Let them know you are proud of what they've accomplished.
I made a video for my mother.
Every veteran deserves to be thanked. Every veteran deserves only the best.
So to all the veterans out there: thank you. Your service is always remembered.
And appreciated.
Remember to let the veterans in your life know how appreciated they are with DAV's Thank a Vet tool. It only takes a few minutes to make a video. Help make their day. Help them remember how much they are loved because all the sacrifices they've made, all the deployments and TDYs they've gone on, all the work they've completed helps give us the freedoms we have today. Click here to start the video process.
Thank you to all those who served. A thousand times thank you. You are remembered.
