How To Show Mom You Care

I always loved my Mom's long hair.

The other mothers I came across always had short hair. But my mom? She had flowing long hair. And the thing is, she was in the military, so it meant she always had to put it up. When she was in ROTC summer camp, some people told her that she had to cut her hair. It was too long. But my mom showed them that she could keep her long hair and would twist it up into a bun.

My mom taught me a lot growing up. How to be a leader. How to plant stuff. (But, well, I have a black thumb.) How to enunciate. How to be a good mother.

Now she's an amazing grandmother.

She's done so much for me, so I always want to show how I care. One thing I like to do is buy her cards from American Greetings. I grew up in the military and now I'm a military spouse, so I shop a lot at the AAFES base exchange on Joint Base San Antonio. There were rows of American Greetings products in the card section:

For almost every occasion you can think of, American Greetings has a card. I was focused on finding Mother's Day cards for the women in my life. I wasn't only buying for my mother but also my Nana Jo, who also lives in the area. She's 95, soon to be 96, and is one of my favorite people in the world. I believe I got my love of reading from her. We're forever talking about books we've recently read. (Jodi Picoult is a favorite author.)

Lucky for me, there is a coupon out so I was able to save money. If I bought 3 cards, I saved $2!

I also picked up gift bags and sparkly tissue.

There are lots of ways you can show your mother you care and that you are thankful for all they do.

1. Buy her a gift. I mean, this is pretty obvious, but pick something meaningful up. I've framed special photographs, and these always seem to be a hit. My mom loves horses, so I've found horse themed gifts. American Greetings has the cutest gift bags and I always have a bunch in the closet for special occasions.

2. Get her a gift card to her favorite store or restaurant. Mothers are always thinking of others so sometimes they need the push to get something for themselves.

3. Book her a massage. I know my mom is always running around, so her muscles could probably use a squeeze.

4. Pick up some chocolates. Well, you can't go wrong with chocolate!

5. Offer to cook her dinner. I'm not the best cook in the world, but a meal always tastes better when someone else makes it.

6. Buy her an American Greetings card! I picked one up for my mom, Nana Jo, and mother-in-law because American Greetings has a card for EVERY mother.

My mother means the world to me. I'm lucky that she's only 45 minutes away now. We're a military family so there were many times where we'd be far away and American Greetings cards were always there to keep us connected. The good news is now I can see her whenever I want.

And yes, she still has her long hair.

  1. One thing Singapore lacks is good cards. I used to send so many out, but once I moved here, unfortunately people stopped receiving cards from me bc they're awful. HA. I miss the States and London for that! Speaking of, thanks for reminding me Mother's Day is right around the corner! ;)

  5. For many older people, greeting cards are still very important. I prefer using ecards now, to save trees but I realize that for some people, getting something hand written is still very important ... so I do send out note cards with hand written messages too.

    1. Yes, I'm all about a real card with writing in it. I save mine to look back on, so I don't think it's wasteful. :)
