10 Reasons Why You Need To Visit The USS Lexington

We went to Port Aransas, Texas for a few days and decided to head to Corpus Christie to check out the USS Lexington. I did this years ago with my husband and agreed to do it again because I know he enjoys it since he's a military guy and all.

I recommend it, because there's lots to see and do.

Here are reasons why you need to explore the massive aircraft carrier.

1. You can put your kids in jail and check out the ship in peace.

I'm kidding. Well, I mean, you CAN put your kids in jail, but then you have to take them with you. Sorry.

2. The history is fascinating. The ship served in World War II and spent 21 months in combat. She destroyed many enemy aircraft and ships. Unfortunately, soldiers died while fighting for our freedom.

All the people who served on the boat were heroes.

3. The movie Pearl Harbor shot some scenes on the ship.

Apparently this wall was used in the film. There are other sections that were used to. Remember the Doolittle Raid? The airplanes took off on the USS Lexington's deck.

4. There are tons of fun photo ops.

5. You can interact in the exhibits!

Granted, no one will talk back to you, but it's still fun to imagine how it would have been.

6. You'll get a workout.

There are tons of stairs. You got up and down, up and down. I was close to 10,000 steps on my FitBit when we were finished.

7. The ship is haunted.

There's been ghost sightings and with the history of the ship, I'm not surprised.

8. You can check out the deck full of aircraft.

9. The kids can walk the plank if they're being annoying.

I was too petrified to do this.

10. You can pretend to fire the giant guns on the side of the ship.

(Fun fact: Natalie bonked her head on one and was like, "These things are heavy!" They are. Soldiers had to have muscles to move them.)

There are other exciting things to do that we didn't, like check out the 3D Mega Theater and go on the Flight Simulator (you pay extra for that.)

The USS Lexington opens from 9-5. I recommend getting there close to when it opens to avoid crowds. We spent several hours on the ship so if you have impatient kids, it's probably not the place to take them.

There are places to eat on the ship, but we weren't impressed by the selection, so I recommend the restaurant Blackbeard's, which is nearby:

Have you ever been to the USS Lexington?

  18. I've done a ship tour like this before. I can't remember the name of the ship, but its off the coast of San Diego and it was so neat learning about the history of that particular ship and seeing all the fighter jets they could fit inside it. It was also really neat to see how they lived every day life aboard the ship and to see their lodging and how they did their jobs.
