When my daughter saw the preview for Bohemian Rhapsody, she was like, "Oh, we have to see that, I love Queen!"
Not many 11-year-olds even know who Queen is. They're too busy listening to auto tune music. But my daughter knows.
I told her I wanted to wait to be sure there wasn't any inappropriate scenes. Freddie Mercury, the lead singer, as many know, had a crazy lifestyle. I did my research and found it would be okay.
So we went. And we loved the movie.
Here are reasons why you need to see it.
1. Freddie Mercury wasn't afraid to be himself. It's a lesson I'm always telling my daughter. Don't be like everyone else. Be different. Stand out. Wear the crown.
2. The songs are incredible. I mean, duh. My parents listened to them when I was growing up so I learned them from an early age. So did my kids. Obviously many songs are in the film.
3. You are reminded that being rich doesn't mean all your problems go away. I admit, sometimes I think, man, life would be easier with money, but it's not the case. Freddie became successful but he wasn't exactly happy all the time. When you get famous like that, it's hard to trust people. You wonder if they truly want to be your friend, or if they just want something from you.
4. Oh yeah, the kid who played Tim in Jurassic Park plays John Deacon, the bass guitar player. Natalie found that to be neat. Also, yes, that IS Allen Leech from Downton Abbey (he played Tom Branson) as Paul, Freddie Mercury's manager.
5. There aren't any graphic scenes in the movie. Some people were wondering about sex and drugs and all of that, but there's nothing crazy. You see worse in Grey's Anatomy, honestly. You can feel safe bringing your child or your prudish family member.
6. It truly is a feel good movie. You'll walk out singing Queen songs and I can almost bet, if you don't already have them all, you'll head to iTunes to download some.
My daughter has started Middle School, and sometimes she struggles to be who she is. She can be out there. She still loves to dress up. I mean, she went to school dressed like Alexander Hamilton a few weeks ago for Red Ribbon Week.
Not a lot of her peers are like that. They're quiet and want to blend in. Natalie? Well, she doesn't. But I know she's at that age where she worries what people think about her. This movie--FREDDIE--reminded her that she should always be who she is.
Freddie said "The whole point of Queen was to be original."
So I told Natalie, "Be original. Embrace your inner Freddie."
It's a lesson for us all, really.
Oh wow! I was excited to see this movie before - but I am even more so now. Thank you so much for sharing this - I cannot wait to go to the cinema now. I LOVE Queen! :)

ReplyDeleteYou all always seem to go and see some wonderful shows. Natalie really gets into everything which I think is wonderful. Will be seeing this soon.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great movie!
ReplyDeleteMike you don't want to see that movie too and I was not too sure on letting him go to it. Reading this post I think it might actually be a fun movie to see with him.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I loved that Mike Meyers played the guy who didn't think Bohemian Rhapsody would work on the radio...LOL
ReplyDeleteYes! Did you keep picturing him as Fat Bastard? With his accent in the movie, that's who he sounded like so it was hard to see him as someone else.
DeleteThe songs! They'd make me watch the Bohemian Rhapsody! And I'm on the lookout for it since many are really appreciating the film.
ReplyDeleteOh man this reminds me, I can't wait for the movie coming out this year!
ReplyDeleteNow that is amazing that there's no sex nor drugs in it because that was the first thing that came to mind when I heard Bohemian Rhapsody was coming out. I will have to see it now
ReplyDeleteIt is so important to get kids into music. Both my children are into music in some form or another. I played music for my daughter while she was still in the womb and now she teaches herself many instruments.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like music that my husband listen to as a teenager. My husband loves it when the kids start singing these old songs
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest, I was never into Queen but the movie could be a good way to introduce myself to their music and story. I have heard a lot of positive reviews about the movie!
ReplyDeleteI am actually going to see this movie on Wednesday, and I can't wait! I have been wanting to see it every since I saw the trailer in the cinema, a few months ago. Everyone says how great it is.
ReplyDeleteYeah! Did you know his real name is Farrokh Bulsara and he is from India.
ReplyDeleteI do :) I think it's pretty cool!
DeleteI've been thinking of watching this movie, as I'm really fond of Queen! I think that thanks to you I'll finally buy the tickets! :)

ReplyDeleteI've been wondering about this movie. I have always been a Queen fan so I do kind of want to see it.
ReplyDeleteI want to see it so badly. Cassidy didn't want to at first and then heard how good it is, so we'll be going asap!
ReplyDeleteWe saw it opening weekend and really enjoyed it. It is casted perfectly for sure. I just felt like it left out a lot of story details that I wanted to see.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like such a fun movie to see. I hope I’m able to check it out this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Glad to know that it's an okay movie for kids to see too. :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adored this movie. I remember the band from when I was in middle school. I loved the music. It was the first time my parents were worried for me. Ha!
ReplyDeleteQueen is one of my all time favorite bands of all time!! I can't wait to go see this movie!!
ReplyDeleteSo many of my friends have recommended it. Sounds like a movie that I should go and see.
ReplyDeleteI am seeing this movie next weekend with friends! It just came out here in Japan.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great one to watch especially for kids so they are able to put some knowledge on watching it. Will recommend it to my niece!
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to see this movie! It looks so good. Hopefully we can go soon.
ReplyDeleteDon’t know if it’s been released here yet! Looking forward to watching it!!!
ReplyDeleteThis post brings me back to memory lane. I used to listen it when I was in High school and they we're so popular too during those days. I love all their songs.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the feedback. I really want to watch this movie. I guess I will have to do this on the weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love that your daughter is not afraid to stand out. That's so hard for some kids her age. I love Queen's songs. If you love Queen, you have to check out Peter Hollens' Queen Medley on You Tube. (He's a singer who does all the parts of the song with his voice -- all the different music parts and the instruments.) I just saw the medley yesterday, and this post reminded me of it. It was so good!
ReplyDeleteBeing yourself is so important...and so hard. My oldest daughter had a style of her own and the self-esteem to pull it off. Not many do.
ReplyDeleteOh I really want. Been traveling since last week. But I will ask my husband to go to the movies with me when we get back. By the way, love that crown in your backyard!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely on my list! I was in the car and Bohemian Rhapsody came on and it reminded me that I need to go out and see it ASAP!
ReplyDeleteSounds like great movie, I will take my kids to this movie, both like music. Yes we need to be as what we are then only life go smooth.
ReplyDeleteI just watched the original person who sang the song and I am amazed! Also, I would love to watch the movie. I am still checking out the schedules here in the cinemas.
ReplyDeleteI love Queen and every song they have. I will definitely watch this movie, can't wait till it happen.
ReplyDeleteThat's incredible! I think it's great that you let your daughter express herself and introduce amazing music to her. My daughter decided to start learning the piano not so long ago, and she's obsessed. If you're interested, you can find the catalog of best Steinway pianos on this page, that's where I bought a piano for my house, and I love seeing how inspired my daughter is when she plays piano.
ReplyDeleteI love music and talented musicians. Of course, the Queen group is world stars and super talents.
ReplyDeleteYou know I also have a rock band and we play and record songs in my father's garage. Also, I love sharing our rock music on the Soundcloud platform, which I think should bring us success and popularity someday. I recently read an article about promoting music on soundcloud and of course I use it now. I want to say that in a very short time, our music has significantly increased its fans.
