The musical Hamilton has FINALLY arrived in San Antonio!
Natalie has loved Hamilton for about a year now and she's never even seen it yet. It was the music that caught her attention.
Also, she loves Lin-Manual Miranda. Same here. He can sing, he can dance, he can write, he can act...
So why does she love Hamilton? Well. I asked her and she said:
1. Alexander Hamilton was a pretty cool guy. For starters, he fought in the Revolutionary War, so he was a soldier, like Natalie's Daddy. He's also on the ten dollar bills since he started the Bank of the United States. He was also against slavery.
2. The music. Duh. That's what drew Natalie into loving Hamilton in the first place. It can be pretty awkward when she starts singing, "How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore, and a Scotsman..." and people look over like, !!!! My eyes well up when I listen to It's Quiet Uptown. Natalie loves The World Was Wide Enough. It reminds her that yeah, you might encounter people you don't like, but truly, the world is big enough for everyone. You don't have to let it mess with your life.
3. The costumes. I mean, remember she wore this Hamilton costume to her Middle School for historical day. Most people thought she was a pirate though. But still.
4. Hamilton had his faults. For starters, he cheated on his wife. I mean, he was trying to help the woman Maria Reynolds because she said she had no money and was an abused wife..so he had compassion, which is NICE, but what is not nice, is that he slept with this woman. Maria's husband found out, asked for money from Hamilton to keep quiet, Hamilton said sure, and Hamilton shared his side of his story in a pamphlet when word got out. I mean, can you imagine as a wife reading about your husband sleeping with another woman?
He also could be rather stubborn, and basically a brat. He knew he was smart, and liked to remind others of this fact. He had many enemies because if he didn't agree with something, he spoke out, which is great, but not in the era of duels. Which is how he ended up in one with Aaron Burr. Burr was running for President against Jefferson, Hamilton thought Jefferson could do a better job so he supported him and basically bad mouthed Burr a ton after that--Burr was pissed, challenged Hamilton to a duel and..
There are lessons to be taken from Hamilton's life: it's okay to be smart, but don't be a jerk about it. If you don't get along with someone, fine, but don't let it ruin your life. The world truly IS wide enough for us all. I remind Natalie of this often. Bad mouthing leads to no where. (Or in Hamilton's case, death..)
Great news! We're going to FINALLY see the show on stage thanks to my parents. It was a gift a few years ago and it got postponed due to Covid.
ReplyDeleteI'm crazy for this musical too, it's impossible not to love it. I like how a true story is told with so much strength and contemporaneity!
You daughter did a great job explaining why she loves Hamilton. But WOW those tickets really ARE expensive! I hope that they drop in price so that your daughter can Hamilton while it is in town!
ReplyDeleteI hope you win tickets playing the ticket lottery! Those tickets are expensive and I'm sure well worth it if it's in the budget.
ReplyDeleteI've still never listened to the music but I bet I'd like it. The show is here this season too and people went crazy to get the tickets!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've learned a few things about Hamilton the man by reading your post. I think it's awesome that Nat loves the musical for the reasons you posted. I hope you win the Hamilton lottery. I know it would mean the world to her!
ReplyDeleteI know some people are totally obsessed with this show. I love seeing musicals, but honestly this one doesn't appeal to me for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI have heard such incredible things about Hamilton that I am sure i'd love it just as much as your daughter! I need to go see the musical!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I have not seen Hamilton and we are a mere hour or so away from Broadway. It has been the hit of the town for so long so this makes me want to get my tickets.
ReplyDeleteI just love musicals and I'd love to see them more often. I've never heard of Hamilton, but I'd love to hear your daughter singing these lines ... great choice, Natalie! :)
ReplyDeleteSo cool! I love musicals but don't get to see them often. I haven't gotten to see Hamilton but maybe one day.
ReplyDeleteI loved learning about Hamilton. To think that even affairs were happening back then is not good.
ReplyDeleteI wish you good luck and I hope you get to go and see Hamilton. I never heard of this musical before, but that is because I am not based in the US.
ReplyDeleteThis makes a lot of sense. Hamilton is such a popular show and I'd really like to see it live with my daughter too! I wish you luck with the lottery!
ReplyDeleteI wish I was able to see the musical Hamilton. I always miss out the times that it has come to my state or close by.
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to go see Hamilton! I love musicals and plays and would love to take my daughter to see this.
ReplyDeleteGood luck winning those $10 tickets! We're going to NY this summer and wanted to take in a Broadway show. My kids wanted to do Hamilton, but I just can't drop $200 each for it. Like you, for 5 of us to go, that would be a whole mortgage payment!
ReplyDeleteI love this blog post! I want to see Hamilton too and saw it was in SA...but I'm with you; the ticket prices are high. I really hope you win the lottery and get to take your daughter to see the show.
ReplyDeleteI have heard so many people raving about Hamilton. We won't be going to see it, considering ticket prices, but I do like the music.
ReplyDeleteI have seen it, you should see it and so I am channeling every bit of energy to you winning those two tickets.
ReplyDeleteI heard it and sound so interesting your kids had a great tasted about music. She look so smart and a talented that want to be part of it soon.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have to look into this a little more because a teenager loves history so it must be cool, lol!! I am so baffled that they are charging $200 for a ticket. That is definitely not nice, I hope you get two tickets for $10 each.
ReplyDeleteI really hope you will win that! I laughed at some parts of this post, witty and true!
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the lottery! I have heard so much great stuff about Hamilton. I would love to watch it too.

I love Hamilton. My kids know every word to all the songs. I just haven't sucked it up to buy the tickets.
ReplyDeleteYou have a kid with some pretty awesome taste. You've taught her well, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard of Hamilton but just like Natalie, the costumes would make me love it! They look too ethical and gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen Hamilton yet, but it does seem like something that would interest me too. I probably would be hooked by the music as well
ReplyDeleteHamilton seems like such a great show. I love Natalie's flair for costumes and actiing. I am really hoping you win and get tickets for $10!
ReplyDeleteThank for introducing me to Hamilton. I learned about him. Hope one day you and Natalie can go for the show. Yes I would like to take my kids too but it is expensive.
ReplyDeleteMy best friend loves this musical. Like she is obsessing over it. I like the music but I am in Japan and we prolly won't get the musical.
ReplyDeleteI love that your daughter is so in too the history of Hamilton. That and the random songs I'm sure are all day everyday. You made me laugh about the inappropriate words. My son is four and starts using his own made up language which uses two "bad words" that I'm fairly certain he doesn't understand. But the looks I get from people... priceless.
ReplyDeleteI hope that someday soon you guys get to go! I don't think I realized the tickets were so expensive.
ReplyDeleteI also love musicals. And I never miss any musical event. I would love to see Hamilton. BTW your daughter looks adorable in Hamilton costume.
ReplyDeleteI don't who Hamilton is but I hope your daughter gets to see it one of these days. She looks really adorable in the costume too.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I have decided the play Hamilton is about his WIFE. I mean, she lived forever and she did so many truly wonderful things.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too familiar with the play, but I love to see that your little one is hyped about it. I love musicals and I'm sure she'll enjoy!!!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I don't know much about Hamilton - I should really look more into it as I do love a good musical!
ReplyDeleteI have never actually seen Hamilton! But now I definitely want to!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it. I heard somewhere that you can now see it for free online.
ReplyDeleteYou're daughter looks good in her Hamilton costume. She got that Hamilton vibe of character too
ReplyDeleteMy husband and daughter would love it most for the music. I always enjoy seeing the costumes worn.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a lot of fun to watch Hamilton. So here's wishing you all the luck to win the lottery. :) -LYNNDEE
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see Hamilton. I have heard it looks was an incredible musical.
ReplyDeleteOkay so I've truthfully never seen it - but i've heard amazing things!
ReplyDeleteI love Hamilton too! Those costumes are so awesome! And that music!
