Is Villains After Hours Worth It?

Walt Disney World has been doing After Hours for a while now in most of their parks. Basically they only sell a certain amount of tickets, so wait times for rides are much lower, and you get free food and drinks. It's normally for 3 hours after the park closes. I was hoping there would be one when my son and I went, and I got lucky! They decided to do a Villains After Hours at Magic Kingdom.

Now, if you don't have a park ticket for the day of After Hours, it's okay! You don't need one. You just need a ticket to the event and you can enter at 7 PM. We did have a ticket for the parks, but we had to get our special armbands. You'll see various set ups around the park.

The bracelets looked like this:

And we got a guide:

As you see, there were special food and drinks JUST for Villains After Party. I wanted to try them all, but at that point it was our last day at the park, and I was running low on funds. So I decided to narrow it down to select ones. These aren't the ones you get for free. They are all $10 or less. I explain more about the freebies below.

On the day of our party, it was from 10PM-1. At 10 they checked to make sure you had bracelets on. If you didn't, you couldn't get on any rides. There were some rides that were special due to the event. Pirates of the Caribbean was one of them. There were live pirates walking around.

Remember the free food and drink I mentioned? Well, at certain carts you get these for free:

It's unlimited and I won't say how many Diet Cokes I had. They don't ask. You just go up, request a beverage, and it's handed over. The kind lady didn't tell me, "Ma'am, isn't this your fourth one in 2 hours?" The lines for the freebies were always short. I think the most we waited was 3 minutes. Many of them you walked right up.

There is also a special villains show called Villains Unite The Night, so the castle is lit up in various styles for that.

And Maleficent the Dragon comes out! You know the one from the daytime parade? She comes out with her minions and blows fire.

Here were the wait times for the rides. As you see, they are SHORT.

Space Mountain is also special for After Hours. I didn't go on it because I'm a wimp, but my son did. He said it was pitch black with villains music. This ride seems to be the most popular during the event, but still, my son only waited 20 minutes.

So what food did we try?

Well, these noodles from Cool Ship. I can't recall their exact name so it's not in the guide, but they are special for the event.

Yup, they were amazing, and spicy, so be sure to have a drink when you're enjoying them.

I also tried the Hades Temptation drink:

It was refreshing because it was warm and humid.

We also tried the Hades Nachos. Again, these were spicy, but so good. You might remember these from Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party!

We went on a bunch of rides. We went on teacups and turned around and walked on it again:

We did the Motor Speedway, Haunted Mansion, Buzz Lightyear, Dumbo:

By this time, it was nearing 1 AM, so we decided to head towards the front. Maleficent was coming through one last time, so we wanted to wait on her.

Also, there were Villains out insulting everyone.

Maleficent the dragon appeared close to 2 AM:

So, was it worth it?

I mean, it's $139 per person. (Cheaper for annual passholders and DVC members.) But you get the free food and drinks that I mentioned. I had many Diet Cokes to stay awake and they were all FREE. Normally they are like $4 in the park.

It's from 10-1AM but you can enter the park at 7. (Someone said they could get in at 615!) So if you arrived at Walt Disney World that day, you wouldn't have to waste a park ticket. You could just stroll in at 7 for the event.

The Villains Unite The Night show was fun. I admit, I liked how the castle was lit up better than the show. I thought it looked cooler for Villains After Hours than Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

Yup, you can even dress up, but follow the guidelines. I saw several people in costume.

The park looked cool during the event which gave it a spooky vibe:

Oh and yes, there were special photo ops. We did these, and there are others, but we didn't run into them. Or I was too busy guzzling free Diet Cokes, I don't know.

There's also special event merchandise. I suggest getting that early. Some places will have the items out at 7. What's been selling out are the Villains After Hour tervis cups. I didn't get one. My son just wanted a t-shirt.

With all of this, yes, I do think it's worth it. Wait times for rides were super low. Some were walk ons. I loved the free Diet Cokes. My son had a Mickey Bar and lots of popcorn.

We loved how the park looked!

Honestly, we preferred this event to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. That one seemed too crowded and I felt rushed. This one was more relaxed. (You can read about our experience at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party here.)

The event lasts until August 8th on select days, so if you want tickets, I suggest you get them. When a date sells out, that's it! You can learn more about the event and buy tickets here.

Would we do an After Hours again? Heck yes! We had a blast and we loved how it wasn't so crowded.

Have you ever done an After Hours event?

  5. This would be so fun to be able to explore the park at night. It is a little bit pricey but it is comparable to a day pass.

  6. This is the time when my jealousy bug kicks in. I so want to live in FL just for this very reason! We adore Disney and live so far away to enjoy it like we want to

  7. We only did one after hours event many many years ago, but it wasn't this organized back then. It sure looks like Disney has perfected the after hours experience -- enough that I would go again!

  21. That sound so very cool. Makes me think of the Halloween Party which they just started selling tickets to for Disneyland. Although I think it would be cool if they did this at other times of the year like this. Something where all the villains come out during the regular year at Disneyland would be fun.
