Things Your Middle Schooler Is Probably Doing

I've written about how Middle Schoolers confuse me. And they still do. My daughter is in middle school, and I'm both amused and baffled by her on a daily basis.

If you have a Middle Schooler, here are some things they are probably doing:

1. Making Tik Tok or watching Tik Tok videos. Don't know what Tik Tok is? It's an app where people do dance moves or make basic videos. Some parents are up in arms saying pedophiles are all over it, and that's true, but if you monitor it, it's okay. I have the password and I check my daughter's account often. I even have an account so if I see anything craziness on her account, I'll call her or the person out. So far, it's been okay though. My daughter has friends who aren't allowed to have the app, but they find a way. They'll make videos with friends' accounts or start their own account and use friends' phones.

2. Have Air Pods in their ears. My daughter got some for Christmas. The problem is, she has long hair so I can't always tell when she has them in. So I'll talk to her and be like, "Okay?" and get no response and I'll be like, "OKAY?" and she'll stare at me and be like, "What?", move her hair back and show me the Air Pods. I really need to get used to asking if she can hear me before I go on first.

3. A Scrunchie will probably be on their arm. Usually it will go with an outfit. Sometimes it signifies that they are in a relationship if they are a boy.

4. They'll want a Hydroflask. Yup Hydroflasks are still around. (I wrote about VSCO girls here.) However, my daughter has gone back to a basic water bottle because she says she's "over" Hydroflasks since so many people have one now. (Also, she lost her Hydroflask.) (Wait. She found her Hydroflask and says she "might" start using it again.)

5. Is your kid sporting a piece of clothing with the CHAMPION logo? Weirdly, this has become popular. Natalie doesn't have these clothes yet, but has them on her birthday list. They look rather drab and blah to me. I told her I'd buy a white t-shirt and just write CHAMPION across it.

6. Is your Middle Schooler wearing clunky shoes? Or maybe Air Force Nike shoes? Yeah, my daughter has the clunky shoes. She wants Air Force Nike shoes with butterflies on them. Apparently you can get them custom made on Etsy. For over $100! I mean !!!! (Also, Natalie says "electric" colors are back in, hence the outfit.)

7. YouTube is still around. Natalie watches this to get ideas on how to build things on Roblox. But she says most people are on Tik Tok now.

8. They probably have an attitude and will be fine like 10 minutes later. This mug at Hallmark is perfect for Middle Schoolers.

9. Oh, they might claim they lost homework. Or their jacket. My daughter is notorious for losing things. Check the front office lost and found. Also check the backpack for the homework. You'll probably find it wedged at the bottom.

So is your Middle Schooler doing any of these?

  1. I am laughing so hard at this post and can agree so much with it! Tik Tok is all the craze right now and I don't get it. Nor do I get the clunky shoes, high-water pants, or the Champion brand. This must be what it is like to get older... ha ha!

  2. I can't say I have anything to go off here as I have no kiddies! But I can tell you my eldest niece is prob at most if not all of these things!

  3. Tik Tok is popular in our house too. I didn't know that things from when I was in middle school (Champion, florescent) were popular again!

  4. I remember when I was in Middle School, all I did was go to my friend's house to play! And now kids have mobiles of they're own. I was already in College when I first had one.

  5. I loved this post and it brought back so many memories of my son. Even though he was from a different generation, the list is basically the same.

  7. Yes, my daughter loves Tik tok. She was into VSCO for a few months last Summer. She does have a hydro flask, she ordered 50 scrunches, she loves oversized sweat shirts, crop tops, earbuds, clunky sneakers & more.

  16. Such a fun read! Now, I don't have a middle-schooler but I do a lot of young people around this age and I gotta tell you, I feel real uncool and old around them...i'm 28. I still don't know what tik tok is! It's crazy to think that middle-schoolers will never know a time without the internet, flip phones of Facebook.

  17. I had to giggle about the airpods. My number one rule about that, when my oldest started it, was she always had to have one earbud out. Period. She had to be able to hear me at all times. She's 17 now, that rule is sort of out the window so I can relate to you! LOL

  29. This post was so funny to read! My son is in middle school, but isn't really into any of those things. It'll be interesting to see what my daughter is into once she is middle school age, but she's got a while to go since she's only 4 thankfully.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mine did none of the above, but they also homeschool, so they don't see a lot of the fads that are out.

    ReplyDelete
