How To Make Periods Less Embarrassing For Teens

Look, teenagers can be tricky: their moods change in a snap, so you never know when it's a good time to speak in their presence. I knew I would have to speak to my daughter Natalie about her period. I made sure to make it seem like it's completely normal--because it is. Lucky for me, Natalie wasn't ever ashamed, and I believe it's because I never made her feel like it was. She tells me some of her friends are embarrassed to talk about periods and if you bring out a pad, they turn bright red.

I think because I've been so open, my daughter doesn't mind letting me know when she needs period supplies. Walmart has the NEW U by Kotex® Teen Pads, which work perfectly for her, plus many
other options like U by Kotex® Teen Overnight Pads and U by Kotex® Click® Tampons.

You can find them in the feminine hygiene aisle.

If you're wanting to raise your daughter to not feel embarrassed about her period, I have tips!

1. Make periods seem normal--because they ARE. Don't make girls feel like it's something to be ashamed of. I bought Natalie U by Kotex® Teen pads, plus the U by Kotex® Teen Overnight pads. With the U by Kotex® Teen Overnight pads, I'm impressed that they are the only uniquely sized pad for teens in market*. They are designed to be used overnight, and have worked well for Natalie. I think it's fabulous that the U by Kotex® Teen pads are uniquely designed for teens--they were made with them in mind. It's probably why Natalie has always been comfortable using these. While some pads can be bulky and uncomfortable, these are not.

2. Be open and make it clear that you're around for any questions. I always told my daughter I was here for ANY question she might have. I know when she first started her period that she was worried how pads would feel. But the U by Kotex® Teen pads have kept her dry, because they are uniquely sized for teens. They are more absorbent to help protect teens from leaks.* (*vs. U by Kotex® Cleanwear® Regular Ultra-Thin Pads)

3. Tell them about their different choices: pads or tampons. Natalie also wears tampons and is a fan of U by Kotex® Click® Tampons. She uses these when she wants to swim and has to dance. She loves that they are compact and that they are comfortable. She's had to dance with these and says she didn't feel uneasy once.

4. Explain that the pads or tampons don't need to be hidden. My daughter openly brings hers. She has the U by Kotex® Teen Pads ready to pass out. She also has the U by Kotex® Click® Tampons available and has no shame asking, "Does anyone need a pad or tampon?"

5. Share your Period Stories! I told my daughter that time I actually had a stain on my pants in middle school and wasn't aware until someone pointed it out. With the U by Kotex® Teen pads , Natalie shouldn't have to worry about any accidents. I love that U by Kotex® Teen is all about empowering women and wants to help free her from worry. I wish this line were around when I was a teenager.

So remember: periods are nothing to be ashamed about. They're normal. And thanks to U by Kotex® Teen pads, teenagers won't have to be uneasy. Shop Walmart for U by Kotex® products, and get $2 back when you purchase U by Kotex® Teen pads or U by Kotex® Click Tampons.

Because basically? Women rock and I'm so glad my teen knows it. With U she can.

  1. This is a little touchy because I am very open about these things but my daughter is no so verbal. These pads seem perfect for younger women and girls.
