Things Moms Of Seniors Should Know

My son recently graduated, so I wanted to share some knowledge with the upcoming senior parents. It can be a stressful and overwhelming time. Trust me, I know. Plus, add a pandemic on top of regular emotional feelings and you can get a bit of a train wreck. But. I have tips to make it slightly easier.

1. You don't need to buy everything in the Josten's Senior Year Packet that'll get. It'll be tempting but honestly, you can buy a lot of senior stuff cheaper in stores like Walmart or Target. Graduation stuff usually starts popping up on shelves in May.

2. Get professional senior photos or take your own. The school might have a company they use for yearbook photos, but seriously, take your own. It'll be more personal.

3. The year will go by fast. One second it'll be September, the next it's time for graduation. Savor all you can.

4. You can order a cheap cap and gown on Amazon. We did this so we could take senior photos earlier in the year. Sometimes you won't receive the cap and gown until right before graduation.

5. Oh and yes, you'll get choked up seeing them in their cap and gown for the first time. You might be teary the entire senior year, and that's okay.

6. You don't have to throw a graduation party. We didn't. We're headed to Walt Disney World instead.

7. Your child will probably have "senioritis" and think they don't have to finish their work. Remind them that they do in order to graduate.

8. Don't push college. If they want to go, fine. If not, remember it's not the end of the world. Everyone has to choose their own path.

9. Give them extra love. While it's an exciting time, it's also a nerve-racking one as well. Have patience. Reassure them. And remind them that you are always here. They might be grown, but you're their parent for life.

So yes, senior year can be a tumultuous time, but I promise, everything will be okay. Written from a mom who has gone though it and will be back in a few years.

  19. I love tip 8. It's been a topic of discussion between my husband and I. I completely agree that everyone needs to find their own path. I went for teaching and don't teach. He went for veterinary medicine and is an incredible specialist. We're all different! If my kids find an amazing career without going to college then so be it. As long as they find something they love and can support themselves doing it.
