5 Reasons Why You Should Watch Turning Red

I'm confused. I watched Turning Red on Disney+ over the weekend with my kids and we enjoyed it. But I've been seeing hate towards the movie floating around social media. Here are some of the things I've seen:

Not geared to small kids

The word CRAP is used

Periods are talked about

The kids are disrespectful

The phrase "my panda, my choice" is uttered and religious folks find that hovering too close on the whole my body, my choice stance. Which, sorry, it is my body, my choice. A woman should never be forced to do something she does not wish to do, ever. I live in Texas and am embarrassed by some of the laws here and hope they change soon.

Anyway.

We enjoyed the movie and there are several reasons why I feel like you should watch.

1. It shows what a middle schooler goes through. I understand if perhaps someone has small kids who don't understand. But they will. Someday. Being a middle schooler is tough. In the movie Mei constantly strives for perfection which isn't healthy. However, she wants to please her mother, even at the expense of her mental health.

2. Periods are discussed and this is a HUGE thing because it should never be kept private. I threw a period party for my daughter when she started and always told her to never be ashamed of her body. I loved how this movie talked about pads and showed them. Some people complain that it made their sons uncomfortable. Well. Perhaps it'll help them become caring men who will run out and buy tampons without hesitation. Just a thought.

3. You'll learn about other cultures, which is always a win for me. I enjoyed seeing the Red Panda ritual. I've seen a "concern" on Facebook from a mother thinking it's close to witchcraft. What?

4. One of the lessons in the movie is to stay true to who you are. Not who your parents want to be. People might have said Mei was rebelling but in reality, she's being who she is and there's nothing wrong with that. Yes, it always hurts when your child doesn't love what you love and enjoy doing what you enjoy doing. But you need to respect that your kid is their own person who doesn't have to share the same views as you do.

5. Acceptance. I love how in the end this family accepts Mei for her differences. It's a beautiful thing when families can do this.

Obviously everyone has their own opinions on certain movies. But do not let the negative opinions prevent you from watching this one. And remember: my panda, my choice.

Have you seen Turning Red yet?

  2. I've not seen this movie yet but I plan to watch it with my kids when we get a chance. I think that it sounds like a more modern type of movie and the fact it mentions periods helps to normalise them. I can't wait to see it, it sounds like it has some important things to teach children.
