21 And Trying Alcohol For The First Time

Tommy turned 21 last week and he decided he wanted to try an alcoholic beverage for the first time. Now, some people might be like, "For the FIRST time? Yeah, right." But it's true. He has autism and likes to follow the rules.

One of his favorite places to eat is Texas Roadhouse. He said he would try the alcohol there.

When we got there, he checked out the menu. He wasn't sure what drink he wanted. I suggested a sweet one. (Oh and someone gave him a dollar since he was wearing his birthday sash.)

He went with something called a Hurricane Margarita blended with a sugar rim. He proudly showed his ID card to the waitress.

So did he like the drink?

Well, he did sip on it.

He did NOT add the extra shot that came with the drink. He thought that might be too much. "I don't want to get drunk and have a hangover," he said.

He ate all his steak and sides. Plus many rolls.

He didn't finish the drink because he said it tasted too much like alcohol at the end.

Would he drink in the future? He said probably not so much because it's expensive. But he said once in a while he might get a cocktail. He says he'll probably avoid the hard stuff. I told him he'll be like JD in Scrubs who always ordered an appletini.

He said he enjoyed his 21st birthday. When we go to Walt Disney World in June he plans on getting another alcoholic beverage. But until then, he'll probably stick to getting water when he goes out because yes, that's what he normally drinks.

Did you drink alcohol before 21?

  1. My parents would let me try some of theirs and yes, in college I drank before I turned 21. It's fun to be able to buy your own drink though!

  2. I didn’t drink before turning 21; and still didn’t for sometime even after my 21st birthday. Despite my sister telling me to go for it, lol! I’m with your son though, not a big drinker either and only have it every now and then. Thanks so much so much for sharing this milestone with us!

  4. 21 what a milestone! Hope you enjoyed your day Tommy. Legal drinking age here is 19.

  5. The JD reference made me chuckle! I am a big water drinker too but enjoy a beer when I'm out with friends. I'm not a big cocktail fan because of how boozy tasting they get at the end so I understand his sentiment on that one!

  6. Oh yes - I drank alcohol before I was 21 and was not responsible at all! Good for him for not adding that extra shot! Stephanie

  7. Wow, 21 years old. I hope he had a great birthday. Sounds like he made a good choice of what to drink. I think he did the right thing not adding the extra shot, it would have been too much especially as he found it quite strong with the alcohol by the end.

  8. Sounds like a good birthday to him. 21 is always a fun age. I honestly don't like drinking much at all. I'm just not much of a fan of alcohol. I love water myself. Happy birthday to him though!

  9. I love how responsible he's approaching alcohol! I also think it's too expensive and have never been a fan of the taste. I only like a couple drinks.

  10. The "not so much because it's (alcohol) expensive" is valid. That why I tend to skip drinking most of the time. Hahaha.

  12. Happy Belated Birthday Tommy! Also, I feel the same way because I am to frugal to spend extra for a "drink" and a regular drink when I am out at dinner.

  16. This was so endearing! It's so nice to see anyone from this day's youth caring so much about rules and self regulating, and he's had such a wonderful mentor helping him through it!

  17. That use to be the drumbeat, 21 and alcohol, but don't have to start. Other great non-alcoholic drinks,
