I noticed the bad reviews about Supergirl early on. I ignored them though. I prefer to make up my own mind. We still went to watch.

I also noticed it was mainly men giving those poor reviews.
They would criticize Milly Alcock's (who plays Supergirl) looks, naturally. I noticed most of the folks doing this weren't much to look at. Maybe they have their own issues and are projecting it onto Milly. I'm not sure. All I know is Milly is a beautiful woman. Dean Cain, who played Superman back in the day, also joined in to make fun of Milly. They've been posting things like this:
Other reasons why men aren't liking the flick?
Dudes claimed there was no way she could defeat "strong men." Hello, she has powers. Yes, she certainly can.
They hated the soundtrack. It didn't bother me.
They didn't like Supergirl's attitude. She didn't have that demure thing going on men tend to enjoy. She's not helpless. She doesn't rely on a man, ever.
They didn't like that she barely smiles. Heaven forbid. I hate when a man tells me to smile more.
They didn't like that men barely get any screen time. (Hello? It's called SUPERGIRL.)
There is no love interest. I personally liked this. I hate when movies toss in a love story for good measure. It's ridiculous.
Basically, it's the men who are whining about the most ridiculous things. They did it for Wonder Woman as well, plus any other female-led movies.
So what did we think? We liked the movie. Milly was incredible in her role. She did kick butt. Without the help of a man.
It's a reminder that you do not need a guy to save you. A reminder never to listen to those who will try and say women are the weaker sex. A reminder to laugh when someone tries to say you must submit to a guy.
Remember, ladies.
You never need a guy to succeed.
I look forward to seeing Milly in the future Superman film and one day, perhaps, she'll have her own movie again. And when she does, we'll be there to watch.

ReplyDeleteI was nodding along through this because the reaction to women characters really does feel different. Complaints about her not smiling enough or not having a love interest are so tired at this point. I like that you focused on what actually worked for you instead.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t seen this movie yet. It sounds awesome. I like that they filmed this even though she is getting hate from men. I’ve been single like 5 years now and I love it. I’m to the point I don’t even want to date. I just don’t care.
ReplyDeleteYour observation about male reviewers isn't surprising. I'm hoping that we will see a shift in societal attitudes over time. It's a slow process. That Milly is a strong female character, and we are now seeing women's sporting events pull a crowd, and that women are rising in professions gives me hope. Articles like yours help change to happen. Women supporting women is so important right now.

ReplyDeleteIt’s interesting to see this kind of discussion play out online. It makes you think about how we consume and react to media in general. Sometimes you just need a break from all that analysis and debate, though. After reading something that gets you fired up, it's nice to have a way to unwind. For a bit of mindless fun and a change of pace, I've found that a site like https://friday-roll.sk/ can be a great way to switch off and just enjoy some entertainment without any of the drama. It's a different kind of thrill, but it's nice to have that option.

ReplyDeleteI have not seen the movie yet, but I have heard mixed reviews as well. I didn't pay attention to who they were coming from, though, so now I will have to pay more attention.

ReplyDeleteNow you've made me curious to watch Supergirl for myself. I want to see whether the reviews are actually fair or if some of the criticism is simply coming from people who have an issue with a female-led superhero movie. Either way, I'd rather watch it and form my own opinion.
