Wanted: Bun Lady

I have a secret.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit it.

Okay. Here it goes.

I can’t do little girl hair.

There.

I said it.

Hell, I can barely do my own hair.

So when I came across this:

I panicked.

I signed Natalie up for ballet and didn’t think about the fact that I’d PROBABLY HAVE TO PUT HER HAIR INTO A BUN.

I don’t know how to do buns.

She usually leaves her hair down or I put it in two braids or pigtails. And let me tell you, when I do this, they are never perfectly center. One braid is usually higher than the other. One pigtail is usually way down low while the other is on top of her head.

Basically, I suck.

I checked Google and there was a site that explained how to do a bun. I tried it on Natalie. But…but…I did something wrong. Somehow I made a big knot in the back of her head that took me ten minutes to brush out.

“You don’t know what you’re doing, do you?” Natalie said matter-of-factly as I struggled to make her hair normal again.

Nope.

I don’t know what I’m doing.

I can only hope there is a Bun Lady at ballet. Someone who will happily do buns for the hair challenged mother. Hopefully for free. Or, if she insists on something, I can pay her in chocolate.

You put my daughter’s hair up, I give you a Twix.

  1. I've never been able to do hair either. My poor kid... she had the lopsided ponytails and braids too. Thankfully she finally learned how to do all that her self! :o)

  2. WHOA! That is weird because I just watched a video on Pink Pistachio on how to put my hair in a bun... because I can't do hair to save my life!

  3. When I was growing up, my mother was a hair dresser. So all school photos, functions, etc, I had my hair done rather nicely.
Except for when she permed my hair. EEK.
But one time, she went out of town to a hair show and my dad had to fix my hair for picture day.
Very, Very bad. He allowed me to use these little clips I liked that had green and blue hair attached to them. While I am sure that is all fun for a little girl on regular days, photo day? Not so much.
Thank goodness I had a boy...

  4. I can't do it either. Glad my daughter only needs ponytails for gymnastics.

  5. I'm not that great at hair either. If it wasn't for my Chi hair iron, I'd have some really big hair! I never really took dance, but I have a few friends who teach it and they usually style the buns for recitals. I think as long as it's up and out of her face for class you'll be fine:)

  6. and i send good luck to you!!!
i've never had to deal with little girl hair.. so who knows!!

  7. I can't do hair either. I'm so glad I have a boy! Good luck, I'm sure there is someone at classes who will be glad to help put her hair up.

  8. Good Luck...if you are feeling like you really want to learn they have pretty good demonstrations on you tube. You will catch on just hang in there!!!

  9. Two months from now, you'll whip into the tidiest little bun you ever did see!

  10. This friend of my sister's in Basic Training taught her how to make a perfect bun using a sock. I will try to explain it so it makes sense.

First, put Natalie's hair in a pony tail. Cut the tow off of a sock. (keep in mind that the bigger the sock, the bigger the bun will be) You should now have a hallow tube. Start at one end and roll it up all the way to the other end so that it looks like a donut or a scrunchie. Thread the pony tail through the center hole, just like you would a hair tie. Then fan the hair over the donut until the sock is completely covered and wrap another hair tie around your bun to secure it. It comes out perfect every time and it's really easy. Stands up to moving around too, because that's how she wore her hair every day of her training.

  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIzoqMh1mfI

Here is a youtube video that shows how they do it. So simple!!!

  12. HAHA - same here! I love the deadpan comment your daughter made.lol
If you figure out an easy way - please let us all know.

  13. *giggle* I'm sure a simple ponytail will do just fine! Where my daughter does her lessons, they're fine with pigtails and braids - just as long as her hair isn't in her face. You'll be fine!

  14. Oh my goodness that is so funny because I can not do the girls hair either. I keep mine super short- kinda like Jaime Lee Curtis, so I dont have to do anything to it. I have watched youtube videos and stuff, even bought those 1-2-3 hair things from tv, the bump it and ponytail extraordinaire that is supposed to be so easy, but I am just hair literate ! LOL.

  15. I can't do hair either. The little one has very curly hair so I just let it go wild most days. As for the oldest one, we try, but I keep it cut short at the shoulders so all we have to do is pin it back with a clip or something.

  16. I took ballet for years, so a bun is something I can actually accomplish... I can do french braids too, but it doesn't matter because except on the rare special occasion, The Girl won't let me.

Relax. Just put it in a pony tail and don't pull it all the way through on the last loop. Show up with it that way and say, "This is the best I can do, if you want better, I'm going to need someone to show me!"

  17. You will both be fine!! Go to Target and get one of those bun thingys! Easy peasy!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Cant you just give her a nice pony tail, for goodness sake???

How about those creepy french braids? Those are WAY too technical unless you have a degree in rocket science. Sheesh.

  19. When I put my hair in a non-messy bun, I just put it in a ponytail, and then twist it till it goes in a circle around itself. Then I hold in in place with one hand and wrap a hair-tie around it with the other hand. Done, and it takes less than 10 seconds.

  20. I can't do hair, either. I used to fight with my mom everyday about doing mine (I preferred the all-down, frizzed-out, unbrushed, in-my-face look), and now Trinity's the same way. Sigh.

My dad once tried to curl my hair for picture day while my mom was out of town. Instead of curling it under, he curled it up into this tacky flipped-out style. Thank God they offer retakes.

  21. If she can do a ponytail herself (a lot of girls can do this by her age, and it really doesn't matter if it's perfet), then you can twist the ponytail around in circles 'til it's wrapped around the ponytail holder and wrap another around it. Non-slip ponytail holders usually work best for this. I was horrible at doing hair for the longest time, and this works with even very difficult hair. I was on colorguard (marching band, the girls that spin flags and various other equipments and whatnot), and we had to have our hair like this. Various lenths all worked like this, and textures too. Even if it has bumps or something.

If not, I'm sure one of the "dance moms" can do it. You know, the ones that put their girls in ballet whilst they're still in diapers. I'm sure the ponytail wrap should be sufficient though. I can't do OPH (other people's hair) and half the time can't do my own, but I can pull that off.

I just have to have the no-slip ponytail holders (best are the Goody brand, if you want it to blend in, the "Colour Collection" are the best, they come in various sizes), and it's best if the person can do their own ponytail first. I can try to pull the ponytail, but it's usually got bumps. If you have trouble, have her lean her head as far back as she can, brush and put the ponytailer in- that's the best way I've found. Having the person look forward is not a good way to put hair in a ponytail for me.

Resources- I have a younger sister, and have tried to put her hair up many times, failing miserably most of the time. I also used to be one of the team captains for colorguard and glitter extraordinaire.

PS I used to do the suggested sock method, it works best with shorter hair- with longer hair, you end up with hair sticking out, which you must wrap around somehow and secure with bobby pins. With my hair, it often came out of place because my hair is baby fine and does not listen to bobby pins. I've found that bobby pins are 100% useless in my hair. However, snap clips are great, so if you find yourself with leftover hair, find the snap clips (Colour Collection also works well here too, if you want them to be less visible), and mousse is less sticky than hairspray but has a similar hold.

  22. OMG, I'll raise your Twix to a Snickers!!! I tank at girl hair! My daughter joined Irish Dance I found out they have to wear wigs and curls and all sorts of other stuff. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around that!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I say have the teacher do it....you are already paying her...maybe toss her a twix too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Do you think we could start a support group for mothers of girls who can't do hair, or maybe our daughters will just have to start their own in a few years! I think the "do my kids hair for a twix" is a great idea and a very fair trade!!! Great and very funny post as usual!!

  25. I sympathize! Maggie's pigtails are always uneven, I like to think it adds a little sass to her outfit :)

  26. I can do my own hair, and was so thrilled that baby #2 was a girl -- I had visions of us doing our hair together before outings. smiling in the mirror. First of all, she was nearly bald till she was 2. Second, when she finally had enough hair...she wouldn't let me within 2 feet of her head. at all. so.....they dream had died. That is until baby #3 arrived -- a girl, and with masses of curly hair blond hair!! I am training her early!

  27. No one tells you about these things, do they? I think a manual should be given out with little girls telling us all this stuff about doing hair and sewing fairy costumes. I could do none of it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ???!!! I NEVER thought about having to do hair! woe is me!

...mmmm! I love Twix! Can it be frozen? I could try to do a bun... :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. For ballet it is best to use the long bobby pins. They hold more hair and stay in better! My momma used to put mine in a pony then braid it then wind it around. Seemed to keep it more secure!

  30. Address? I'm coming... Keep the Twix handy!

My grandmother did the most obnoxious things to my hair when I was a kid, anytime she could get hold of it. And I learned, soon enough, how to undo it and fix it.

  31. Go to You Tube. They have tons of videos on hair and make up. Step by step. If that works, send me the Twix!!! haha.

  32. And this? This is just ONE of the reasons I was on my knees praying for a boy when I was pregnant. This and tying bows...I can't do them either. Thankfully, God listened.

  33. Their hair is so fine and slippery! Hair is much easier to fix when it is damaged by coloring and blowdrying, straightening, etc.

  34. Try this blog

She did a 30 hairstyles in 30 days thing with step by step instructions for all of them!

  35. I'm sure there is a fellow mom who will gladly help you out! I would!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Also, my mother was never that great at doing our hair so even when she tried her hardest it was normally fixed by someone there haha

  37. Yeah, I have the same problem with my daughter's hair. She has magnificent hair--Shirley Temple curls that are now down to her waist. For the life of me, I cannot do her hair! Everyone else does an amazing job on it though.

On wacky hair day at camp, I looked away for a minute. The counselor put my daughter's hair high up on her hair. Honestly, it didn't look wacky at all--it looked like she was going to the prom! Another camper looked at her jealously and said that she looked like a girl on Toddlers and Tiaras (gee, thanks?).

Today when I picked her up from camp, she had another fancy hairstyle. I guess the camp nurse was doing a lice check, and had fun with my daughter's hair after checking it out!

Everyone can do amazing things with it in a matter of seconds. Me? I'm hair-challenged!

  38. I have two daughters and I can not do hair! It's always lumpy and bumpy and just a hot mess.
    So um good luck!

  39. It took me many years but I can now do my daughters hair. It's not elaborate, but I can do some pretty even piggy tails and occasionally some fronch braids. But only when the planets are perfectly alighned:)

  40. Hmmm, I'd been thinking about dance classes for Miss Seven, but I can't do buns either. Might encourage her towards Hip Hop or tap...
I think the kind of hair the child has makes a difference. Both my girls have very thick very straight hair that would fall out of a pony tail if given the chance. Hair that is nice and fine would "bun" much more easily.

    ReplyDelete
  41. At my daughter's dance classes, they only need to have their hair pulled back (ponytail). If hers does require the bun, look in the hair care aisle. There are lots of clips that make bunning easy! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, I feel your pain! I had to fix my daughter's hair for dance competitions last year. I even got into a big of a scuffle with her teacher over the need for her to have a bang poof. I'm definitely not cut out for dance...though we just signed up for another year.

  43. Not that this compares, but I can't tie my boy's karate belts. I do it wrong every.single.time. Someone fixes it at every class.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am impressed you even can do pigtails and braids- I am beyond hair challenged.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't have a kid, but I have tried and tried the "messy bun" thing with my own hair, and it just comes out looking silly.
